  • What are Niemann-Pick disese types A and B? Niemann-Pick disease types A and B, or NPD-A and NPD-B, which are subtypes of acid sphingomyelinase or ASM deficiency, are rare, genetically inherited conditions characterized by the inability to break down a fat called sphingomyelin due to a deficiency of the enzyme, acid sphingomyelinase.

    Is there a typo in the video ? In the treatment paragraph it's written : NPC-A and NPC- B . Isn't it NPD-A and NPD-B ? Thanks for the video by the way it was very helpful for my peds exam

    I love how these videos make sense, but also don't make sense at all xD I have to watch them twice or three times to understand the concept, haha.
    I'm sad that the third type wasn't covered in this video. But I do understand that they said that the third type could be considered its own disease.

    Great video! However I have a doubt, isn’t the cherry spot in the macula that is explained a sign of Tay Sachs instead of Niemann Picks’? Or does it appear in both? Thanks!

      it appears in both, the main difference in both diseases is that in Tay Sachs dx there is no hepatomegaly and spleenomegaly while in Neimann Pick there is hepatospleenomegaly
