  • Arye Ephrath was born in a basement. It was spring, 1942 in Slovakia and local authorities collaborated with Nazi Germany to deport Jews, targeting young adults like Arye’s parents. His father had already fled to the nearby woods. Arye’s mother retreated downstairs, where she went into labor. The threat of deportation followed. In August 1944, Nazi Germany invaded Slovakia. Arye and his family escaped to Šišov, a Slovak village, where strangers hid them until their liberation in spring 1945.
Hear Holocaust survivor Arye Ephrath’s experiences in his own words recorded on November 16, 2022. First Person is a monthly hour-long discussion featuring a live interview between journalist Bill Benson and a survivor and including questions from the audience, available on the Museum’s CZcams channel.

My goodness. Bunker would have been so horrible to get through. At least they had heard that the end of the war was near. Thank you for your testimony.

So grateful to hear stories where people did the right thing. The family that tried to live the ‘good Christian values’ is exactly how it’s supposed to be. Jesus would love everyone. My grandmother was 16 in Czechoslovakia and was catholic. Her family was verrry poor and she had to get a job as a nanny. It was for a Jewish family that was well to do (this is around 1938-1940 ish). She said the Jewish family she worked for took very good care of her. They treated her incredibly well as their nanny. They left because of the Nazis and when they were gone my grandmother new she had to go to. Turns out my grandmother had American citizenship, (her mother was pregnant with her when she was visiting the us and my grandmother being born on US soil had automatic citizenship. My great grandparents obviously went back to Czechoslovakia and raised their children. So when my grandmother was 16 and no longer had a job with the wonderful Jewish family she hopped on a boat and came to American herself, couldn’t speak English. I couldn’t imagine how hard that must have been. But, as a very devoted Catholic that she was I loved hearing how she had such warm feelings for the Jewish family she worked for. I’m so glad she told me when I was young so I could appreciate all people. It’s about the goodness in your heart not what religion. (Makes me mad that some Christian’s twist what Jesus teachings were, Jesus was Jewish and never said to not be Jewish. God bless everyone who reads this. God bless people of different religions reaching out to understand each other and loving one another.

Watching this important program once again. These testimonies are so important as in a few years there will no longer be survivors with us. I have directed 2 plays connected with the holocaust. One “Address Unknown” and also “ The Will” Both in Hebrew in Israel.

Thank you Sir, it is so brave of you to do this but so necessary. What terror your poor mother must have felt. Giving birth in such conditions and worrying on how to keep your baby safe. What a beautiful family photo, so precious to have. So sad and just so unnecessary. How man can become so inhuman is unbelievable but it still goes on today. G-D bless you sir and your family 🙏🙏🙏🙏👵👵👵🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
