Growing Pomegranate Trees from Seeds, Days 0-31

- Pomegranates are fun and enjoyable to eat despite all the work it takes to peel off the arils from the mesocarp. I recommend skipping all the brown and mushy ones. Pomegranates come from the region along Southern Asia ranging from what was once the Persian empire to India, and have been introduced around the world. This is a great starter guide for getting started with some seedlings indoors during wintertime. I got a very high germination rate with this method. The pomegranate I ate was grown in California, which suggests that my seedlings will love the local climate.

We accidentally grew our pomegranate tree. My kids were eating pomegranates out in the yard & after awhile a little plant started growing. I kept watering not realizing it’s a pomegranate tree. Now it is over 5 feet tall & doing beautifully. I guess all of the conditions were just right because I’ve never done anything else to it. Thank you very much for your interesting video!! 😊🌱
A couple small points of feedback. Humidity doesn't just prevent the plants from losing moisture, plants actually take up water via their leaves as well. Additionally, when you have a situation like the small seedling that fell over when you watered, unless the root comes up with the stalk it is actually better to leave this alone rather than trying to right it with your hands manually. The plant will actually right itself, usually within hours. You are more likely to damage the seedling mechanically and your skin oils aren't good for them. As for peroxide haters, 'toxic' hydrogen peroxide is produced naturally in the body and is present in rain water.

Awesome video. Currently planted 4 pomegranate seeds in a container and another 4 using the paper towel method. I tried this a year ago and they worked but ended up dying a few months after. Hopefully this year is successful.

I live in the hi desert of california, my grandma always had a pomegranate tree in her yard whenever we came over around winter wed take them and just sit on a bench eating them, just planted myself an early wonderful pomegranate tree, really excited to see if im lucky and it fruits in october, or if i have to wait a year lol

Having grown up in the Imperial Valley I had the pleasure eating pomegranate from our trees frequently. If you would take your halved fruit and put into a bowl of H2O and breaking up in the water it's a lot faster and less messy to get those delicious gems. Great video. Thanks!

As someone who has a number of these seedlings as well, don't overwater, give them a bit of light and heat and they should do fine. Mine (my growing zone is about 7b ish in comparison to the US?) are currently overwintering in a dark garage. These little trees can and will go dormant over here. I feel like you're overwatering these though... Germination rate is around 85 - 95% so is allround very good.
I germinated mine in a small growing chamber (one of those plastic windowsill things were you can self regulate the amount of moisture, which means you can ease them from plastic wrap to no plastic wrap better), on a window with Southwest exposure. No grow light needed, even in winter. (I do have a grow light for my 2y old carambola, also a fairly good germinator, but more finicky and more tropical than the pomegranate). Pomegranate will grow bushy on it's own, no trimming needed, they are fairly resilient.
I live in 7b also, just started growing and mine are doing great, now it's the beginning of October, I do have a grow light,
My question is
1. I use banana peel water and I water them Sunday and Thursday until the water flows through the holes in the bottom, how is that
2. How many hours a day should I keep my light on them

How long does it take to germinate and do you just keep the seeds warm whilst germinating? It’s been about ten days and no signs of sprouting yet but I didn’t plant in dirt. I just have them in damp paper towel and zip lock bag and then I will put in dirt soon as they sprout.

If you plant them then they may sprout. It could take 1 or 2 weeks for them to sprout or more.

I think so, I have a big bag of sand so that's what I used. There's also things like vermiculite but I haven't tried that, I think that might just all float to the top because it has such a low density. I think sand has the benefit of being heavy and helps to anchor the roots down. Having a clear container is great because I can monitor the soil water levels by sight alone

9:45 use open plastic syringe to gravity drip water plants. Water flow is light enough not to disturb seedlings. I use this method to water tiny strawberry, blueberry, bell pepper and tomato seedlings. Total control, no over watering or excessive splashing. Just researching growing pomegranates and just finished stripping the pulp from over 100 seeds (wasnt that hard but stripped them while watching movies like i was eating popcorn. Kept my hands busy) Do pomegranates require a sandy soil mix to grow or was that a personal choice?
I just planted them in the soil from my backyard and it's working out fine but I did start them with the paper towel method
And the soil is very clayish and moist but it does have very good drainage

Why don’t most seeds sprout inside of the fruit? Why do they sprout when we remove them and plant them? I know some seem to sprout after being dry for awhile.
Fill the sink with water and place the fruit under the water, and push the outer part inward it will cause them to pop out and float to the surface

Hey Melvin, I've seen some of your transplant videos. I Liked all of them especially the pomegranate videos you've posted. I Noticed you had some trouble in the second video, the seedlings were kind of wilting and not taking to their new environment. I would like if you retry your method, but without disturbing the roots little to none. This way your seedlings do not go into stress and shock.
Usually this is why they falter after a transplant.if you can buy one of those plastic seed planters that keep each of the seedlings seperated but close together, and you can still do the seran wrap technique for a greenhouse effect... when ready to Trans plant you could individually pop each seedling out in its own sand/clay dirt cone, and "NOT"remove any of the drivers off the root... this will help greatly with your transplants and avoid shock.

Transplanting a packed root ball is better than trying to delicately remove the roots and transplant into entirely new medium, I agree. In general the sand + filtered clay soil works, but my plants grew very slowly in it. Lately I started using coco coir and the aeration is superb, I think I won't go back to sand-based growing mediums.
Exactly. Many people see root bound plants when transplanting and damage the roots by pulling them apart because they’ve been told to do that. It’s ridiculous and damages the roots unnecessarily. The roots will find their way into the new soil.

I came here because I accidentally started growing a pomegranate, I threw some seeds from an eating container in a pot thinking it wouldn’t grow 😭 but I’m proud it has lasted as long as it has so far, any tips for when the first two leaves start withering after about a month and a half? Perhaps not enough water

Probably because free is cheaper than cheap. Why buy a brand new toyota just to drive a couple blocks every other day when you already have a car?
Add springtails to your germinating cup and you won’t get mold no matter how much pulp or humidity. They devour any trace of mold

I hope that’s what is in my soil: cos my plants indoors have had shocking mould issues growing white fuzz on top of soil and I am now seeing tiny white bugs in my potting soil but they seem to stay in soil, I hope they are spring tails 🤞 I think they are as the mould is getting take caring of by these bugs it seems.
Pics of harvesting pomegranate seeds really easily and cleanly, you make certain cuts on the outside and turn the peri/mesocarp inside out and basically beat the outside of the fruit with a large spoon and all the seeds get knocked out pretty cleanly and all at once.

My pomegranate just sprouted! Two so far. I just put my seeds right into soil, I tried the bag too, but they got moldy.
Did they not sprout in the bag method? I’m doing bag method and they haven’t sprouted yet and it’s been like ten days.
Adnan Khan so maybe they don’t like the bag method? I am having no luck with that method too. Time to plant some more in some soil now. Did you have any luck germinating any? If so what did you do mate?

Fresh is ideal but dried for a short period should be alright, buy likely lower germination rate. Warm weather seeds like pomegranates, mangos, papaya, etc prefer to be planted straight from the plant as they don't need to undergo stratification.
Midwest Mangos thank you for that. I better hurry up and plant my dried seeds. I have put some aside incase my seeds I have no don’t sprout. I have planted some fresh ones in damp paper towel in a zip lock bag. It’s been ten days and no sign of germination yet 🤷♀️
But I will try and plant the dry ones in some potting mix and hope that helps them sprout.

@@NMW80 hi..i didn't have any success with the dried seeds..i did buy a fresh pomegranate and used the fresh seeds and they sprouted..i put the seeds in wet paper towel in Ziploc bag..i forgot how long they took to sprout..but they pretty much all sprouted..so better to use fresh seeds..that goes the same for oranges..grapes and apple seeds...i know you can dry watermelon seeds to replant later...once my pomegranate seeds began to sprout in the moistened paper towel I planted them in potting soil..good luck😊

if you rip the pomegranate into pieces and hit the back of it with a spoon they pop right out, only takes 15 minutes to get them all out :))

Zi that’s what I do. I planted heaps of lemon seeds and lol nearly all sprouted but so many other seeds from store bought fruit didn’t sprout. Like all berries I have tried didn’t work so I’m trying again with putting them in wet paper towel in bag in the fridge for weeks and then plant in dirt. I always have luck with tomato seeds they are so easy lol they grew without me even trying. I dropped some seeds onto my other plants I had growing under grow lights and they sprouted with just being moist and having light with no dirt lol now I have a few cherry tomatoes growing inside while it’s winter still but will be ready for spring time to go outside. I usually have 50/50 germination with avocado seeds. But I always plant a few so it doesn’t matter and I keep the strongest plant and most cold hardy. I have had luck with apple seeds now I know to put them in fridge for weeks with damp paper towel in bag or container. I have heaps of apple seeds all growing in the fridge atm. I think that means I am meant to plant them when they have grown a fairly big root. It’s over an inch now so they are all getting planting in dirt when I get some more pots for them all lol there is heaps.
I am going to make Granny Smith and pink lady trees out of them all with grafting if they turn out crap apples it doesn’t matter cos they will have some awesome apples on them too. I want to try cherry seeds, nectarines, peaches and blood plums and graft on them all like the apples especially if they don’t turn out that good. Most fruit trees grow up to produce nice healthy edible fruit and so what if it’s not the usual common types, it’s still going to be very similar and healthy etc and we can always graft other varieties onto the trees later on. You can get Scions for grafting for like 6 bucks where I am from so that’s what I’m going to do with all my fruit trees eventually so I can have several types on the one tree to save space in my yard.

Yeah a 50 pound bag costs less than $7, it would cost more to drive out to a riverbank, the beach, or the desert to get that.
