- The first birds from my latest incubation attempt have hatched and it is time to move them to the brooder box. There are still a lot of eggs left to hatch but there is plenty of time for them to go ahead and do so as well.

If you want a reusable option instead of paper towels, you can use diaper cloth. You can cut them to the right size for your brooder. You just have to shake out all the solid stuff on them before washing.
Lol. You said a mouthful there. My quail hatched a couple days ago. I put their feed on a lid. Well, it took about 3 minutes or less before it was empty. Not that they had ate much but they were scratching at it like a hen after a worm. Lol. From hours old they've been doing this.
i used the wire cilenders but big enough for the whole shade to fit in and two welding rods to adjust the higth thanks for all the information you share

I am starting off with Georgia Giant Bobwhite Quail and will hatch some Texas A&M Quail after that. I'm really excited about getting into raising quail. My chickens are on autopilot for the most part and hope to get the quail set up in the same kind of way.

That's cool! Mine also have lots that hatch at first and after three days I take then out, add water to the incubator and get a few more quail to hatch

1. do you wash the eggs before you incubate them? And if so, with what?
2. Do you grind up the starter in the brooders or just give them normal crumbles.?

hi chris i have eggs hatched early morning only 5 have hatched they have been out 15hrs or so. i know some say they can stay in for 24rhs and to wait for the others to hatch. I don't want to have them get shrink wrapped by opening the incubator to much. What is the longest you have left them in the incubator for?

Slightly Rednecked still a good brand. I save many of my empty containers to use for various things too like sorting screws and bolts and various trapping items.

No, i have used the regular chicken egg rails before and they worked just fine.
We just built a brooder so we can put them outside this time and it's bigger than I thought it's 36x54 hoping it's going to be big enough for them to start of with. I didn't I'll get 100% hatch rate but we will see I got 100 eggs that would start to hatch tomorrow or Wednesday

@@h.s.6269 So far I had 49 hatch still have a few more days to go to see if any more are going to hatch but still this is the most I've had hatch at 1 time and the most eggs I've tried to hatch at 1 time to so we're pretty excited
Interesting question. I started with 5 females and 2 male quail. And at first I was not getting many eggs. So I bought 36 eggs from a local guy. But when I got the eggs. The birds I had gave me 8 eggs. Well I put the 36 eggs and the 8 eggs in the incubator. Well I had a good hatch rate. I had so many hatch I couldn’t put all the babies in one cage so I had to put some in with the original bird. My question is. If the adult birds mate or breed with the babies. Will it be a problem if they are there offsprings.
Good question. It isn't anything to worry about. I do it all the time and have no way of knowing which birds are the parents.

Hi just getting started with cortenex quail got 15 at min getting incubator soon any advice is welcome channel great I'm in England
I have a question. How early can you tell the males from females? From day two, there is 2 of the chicks that stand tall stretch their necks and peep. The rest of the bunch are quite as church mice. But that 2 are the loud mouths of the bunch.
Morning Chris, great video. How tall are the cones that you set you heat lamps on. We hatched out a batch of eggs a week ago. Only got about a 35% hatch. Again great video, thanks for sharing. Take care and best wishes

What is the shelf life for food eggs, with and without refrigeration? Do products made with quail eggs have the same shelf life as if they are made with chicken eggs?
Shelf life really varies based on your environment but I would say that eggs can last up to a month or more in the refrigerator and almost as long on the counter (as long as they don't start to develop). There really isn't any difference in shelf life of products made with quail eggs or chicken eggs either.
Hi Chris, thanks for another informative video. I'm curious, what is the difference between a jumbo meatmaker and a jumbo pharaoh quail? Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer.
Not much really. The pharoah lay a slightly bigger egg and the meat maker get slightly bigger. Honestly, I can't tell much of a difference so far.
Why anybody persists with heat lamps instead of a heat tray is beyond me. The heat tray (20W) will use less power in 1 weeks than a heat lamp (150W+) will use in one day.., WITHOUT the fire risk problems..., and they are fully adjustable (in seconds) as the chicks grow. Another good informative vid though.
Which quail are the meat makers? I'd like to add those to my quail.
I haven't heard of the "Meat Maker" breed of quail, where do you get them? Sorry really new to this.

I haven't tried them so I can't say for sure.
Do you always use a heat lamp bulb or would a 120 watt flood lamp bulb work?
It depends really on your set up and where your brooder is. If it is well insulated and in an area that stays pretty warm you might be able to get away with a flood light. But I have always needed a more powerful heat lamp myself .
I live in central Arkansas so my weather is probably close to what your weather is and my brooder would be in a shop building. I am using a clear tote similar to yours except my birds will be on a wire floor with a droppings tray below.
Was wondering have you ever thought of growing your own feed for the quail not just fodder but even before it to make fodder so that you don't have to keep buying their food and what would you recommend to get started . I was also thinking of mealworms as well to mix with.

I really haven't put much thought into it. Quail require a variety of things to have a balanced diet. Seeds, grains, plants, and insects and, to be honest, it just gets overwhelming for me trying to figure out the right mix. I actually think it would cost me more to try and grow their food for them. Sorry I can't help much.
I was so happy that I was about to find the quail water things the marbles were a pain. We're did you get the wifi temper gage that's something I need to look into because the brooder is in the shed this time
It is in my Amazon shop. They run about $35 and it has worked very well for me so far.

New to raising qual what is farrow and what is meat maker birds
After the first quail hatches when can you take it out? Do you only take out the fluffy ones?
You definitely don't want to remove them until they are all dry and fluffy. You can wait up to 3 days from the hatch to remove them but I usually do it after 24 hours. The key is to try and not open the incubator while some eggs have pipped the shell but not hatched completely yet.

Are the pharaoh less productive in terms of meat and viceversa for the meat maker producing less eggs?
No. Honestly, I can't tell the difference between the meat makers and the jumbo pharoah.
thanks for the video! I have recently hatched some japanese quails but I had very poor hatchrates. I had 38 eggs shipped to me (was 45 but some where smashed/cracked when arrived) and incubated them right away but only had 7 hatch. They are 4 weeks old now and are doing great, really fat and strong. but I noticed a lot of eggs pipped but never hatched. I think maybe my humidity was too low, it was around 58% - 60% during lock down and even though all the water was filled I couldn't get it close to 70%. Do you think poor hatch rate was due to that or I guess it could be many other things?
I am sorry to hear about the poor results. The first thing i would look at is temperature. That is usually the biggest factor in a poor hatch rate. You might try to get a couple of calibrated thermometers (non digital). Make sure they are calibrated and check to see if the incubator is reading temperature correctly.

It should be around 100 F for the first week. Then you can start lowering it by about 10 degrees every 4 days or so.
Why are most of the bottom channels built with weep holes. I filled up the bottom and over half of the water ran out on my freezer

I am sorry for the slow response. I don't know that there is much you can do but wait. Unless you have a generator or something to power the incubator. Depending on how long the power was out, it may not affect the hatch much at all.
Hey chris i have a question. I just hatched some Georgia giants n i have a runt of the litter so to speak. He smaller than the others n is always by him self. Should i separate him n hand raise him by his self. Their less than a week old
I have that happen in a lot of my hatches. I don't tend to separate them out and they usually catch up to the rest of the birds eventually. Sometimes I lose them though so it is up to you how you want to handle. If he is really really special and you want to make sure you don't lose him, then it might be a good idea to keep him separate for a week or two, until he gets stronger.
If the birds lay when I’m at work how long is to long before putting in the incubator I’m only going to do like a hand full to start
As long as they dont freeze once a day
You could go longer but you dont want poop on the shells since could lead to a lot of bacteria in the warm moist incubator

Walt pretty much answered that for you but to expand on it, you can store the eggs for up to a week before incubating. Just keep them in a place that is a little on the cool side (50 to 70 F is perfect) and turn them once a day.

How much do you feed your rabbits
I have a question? I have quail that don't seem to want to breed. We have 4-5 Females to 1 male and are 9 weeks old. The male just chase the females and they don't show any interest in the male. What can I do?
Just wait. The male quail that dont jump the chicks isnt born yet!
The females will never show interest. The males will figure out what to do any day now. They will keep trying until they die.
I agree with the others, just give it time. What you are describing is pretty normal behavior. I am sure that there is some breeding going on, you just may not be seeing it.
What is the score? How many eggs were put in and how many chicks did you ger
I don't remember how many eggs I put in (but I can count them up when it is all done). I still have birds hatching. Looks like the Pharoas are doing much better, I am up to 25 of those. There are still about 5 or 6 eggs left to hatch. The meat makers aren't keeping up though, only 14 hatched so far and about 15 eggs still in the incubator.
I had my first hatch and I moved them to the brooder box and when I added water to my incubator the next late hatch doesn't seem to be drying how long can they stay wet
They should dry out in 24 to 48 hours. You may have added a little too much water. It should level out though pretty quickly.

I am not familiar with them either but they seem to be just a strain of coturnix quail. Kind of like Jumbo quail. If that is the case, there isn't really any difference in how you incubate or care for them. Good luck with your hatch.
Why would you not want to drop water on eggs?. I mist my eggs. Wonder if I shouldn't?
The water could chill the hatching chicks and kill them
It destroys the bloom that protects the eggs
Walt got it right, I worry about the sudden temperature fluctuation. Either chill them or send them into shock.

Got a question to ask you would you be willing to send a male and a female quail to someone if they was willing to buy it from you I would like a male and female quail so I can start hatching my own eggs
Adult birds are very difficult and expensive to ship
Day old chicks have they own food supply from the eggs yolk
And one male and one female would not be a good ratio normal is 5 hens to one Rooster less than that and female gets over bred
I am sorry but I am not set up to ship birds or eggs. Like Walt said, you really need more than one hen for each rooster. And it really is best not to ship live birds. if you can't find someone locally that sells live birds it would be best to order eggs and hatch them out. Check craigslist for your area, I bet someone is selling them.
I bought a incubator and the brooder but then the quail decided to hatch there own chicks so I never use my incubator or brooder

As long as you don't have it right on the plastic it should be fine. You shouldn't have to get it that close to it for it to work well.

What temperature should the brooder be at?
About 100 F for the first week. Then you can start backing it off. Just watch the birds. If they are all huddled together under the light, it is too cold and you need to warm it up (move the light closer). if they are all spread out as far away from it as they can be, it is too hot. If they are all just spread out and moving around like nothing is wrong, you have it just right.
Do they stop laying in the winter
Yes most birds need 14 hours of day light to lay eggs unless you give them additional hours of lighting in the winter they will stop laying
