  • Self cleaning brooder keeps your quail healthier by keeping them off of the droppings and substrate. In this video I explain why I designed a new brooder for my coturnix quail chicks and some of its benefits. If you have any questions on this build please post in the comments section below.

That looks like an excellent brooder with a lot of thought going into its design and construction. I especially liked the tips on adding the wheels, using the cabinet shelf lining, and epoxying the surfaces to make it more durable and able to stand up to cleaning.

Your design works great for an enclosed quail house, but most folks keep their birds outside. I really like your set up and have a small amount of envy as I keep my quail in a 10ftx10ft enclosed section of a 30ft covered layer run with 3 layer stacked 2x8ft cages. I use tortoise 3ftx2ft habitat with modifications. Half of the habitat has a screened door hinged the other 1/3 over the sleep area also has a hinged door but it's solid. The end panel slides out. I staple 1/2" hardware cloth on that opening which gives me the option to close off brooder for first few days and then open during daytime warmer days and close off during night. I don't install the sleep house partition and staple 1/2 coated hardware cloth on the underside making it easy maintenance like yours. The brooder is elevated a couple inches with simple block feet on the corners and use a dog kennel plastic tray as the poop pull out. I use nipple container on the outside of the brooder and a simple plastic feeder tray like you use. Clamp lights with 75W and if temps are really warm reptile ceramic bulbs keep chicks warm. I easily keep 50-60 chicks for 2-3 wks and then transfer to battery cage with overhead warming plate. I could build something like yours, but my skills are far from yours and it would end up costing me more than buying this $100 set up. I have two of these modified as brooders and keep on a 24"x60" table out in the run. If the night temps fall I can always throw a loose tarp over the set up to hep keep out drafts. Two of these modified habitats can handle a 120 hatch egg order at 75% hatch rate. Just another option for folks like me who can't really construct things very well. I appreciate your sharing your set up and designs, I've learned many tips.

That’s not a self cleaning brooder… That’s just a brooder with a wire floor. I can’t imagine that a wire floor is good or pleasant for young chicks. in fact, I don’t entirely like the idea of a mesh floor for adult birds. I keep mine indoors in an enclosure I built myself with dirt, and it needs little to no maintenance. I haven’t cleaned it or swapped out the dirt for three weeks now and it’s fine. and they endlessly dig in the dirt. if you want to see what kind of enclosure it is, I’m on Instagram as babyquailadventure.

Ok, going to say it. You have got to stop building these projects! I cant keep up with building them myself! Every time you build something, I have to go out and build 1 also!
