Summary:
Brood for 3-4 weeks (spring, summer, fall can be earlier),
6 chicks per square foot until 3 weeks old, then change to 3 quail per square foot,
Bedding: 1st week blue automotive paper towels, 2nd week just on 1/2 x 1/2 wire
1st week 250 watt lightbulb, 2nd week 125 watt lightbulb, 3rd week off the heat (add cover to trap heat)
Temperature/Heat: adjust heat as needed as you observe chick behavior (huddling, active, etc.)

I have an 18"×48" insulated wooden plywood packing crate covered with 1/4" closed cell foam brooder for when I first remove the quail babies for the first couple days. I have a 100W black ceramic heater "bulb" on either end and these are controlled with a cheap 12v temperature control unit that keeps either end at 95 (the WTC 1203 turns the heat on at 92 and off at 95 and I verify this with a secondary temp sensor as well as a temp gun) I cover the middle with a plexiglass lid and wine box ends for the sides (free from the liquor store if you ask). I have a second week one set up I made out of a metal covered plywood chest locker lined with schluter 1/4" foam board for a smaller second hatch or to separate breeds etc set up with one heat lamp and a plexiglass cover (I leave the lid open on the chest). I line these with drawer liners (2 halves per baby box so one half can be taken up and replaced at a time and replaced with a cleaned half as needed.
After they start to get acclimated to being alive, I move them to two larger 44"/48" x 24" 3/4" plywood walled brooder boxes with 1/4" welded wire over 36x25 auto zone automotive drip droppings trays. Box boxes have their temp controller that can be set for 90 and stepped down daily if desired, until they go outside in their growout cages week 3-4 where I switch to 1/2"x1" coated cage floor. I cover these with plexiglass and plywood /winebox "slats" to allow me to vary the ventilation or exhaust based on the outside temp. I have screen lid sections as well if needed, but the WTC1203 temp controller does a great job and keeping the floor temp where I want it and they are cheap ($13/4), easy to wire/set, and can run off my solar bank fo'free!
In the first few weeks I offer water in a chick waterer ring with cleaned pebbles to prevent drowning but I introduce nipple drinkers I made out of Gatorade bottles or plastic square grapefruit jars I save... I seal the nipple drinker while threading with a glue gun to prevent leaking. This gets them used to using them so they transition to the waterbar nipple drinkers more readily.
This system gives me flexibility and when not in use can hold brooder supplies and the lid can be used as a workspace top.

This is my first year with quail. If I can do it you can! I used an inkbird to help me with the temp on the heat lamp and a brooder plate since I was afraid and wanted a backup. Have fun :)

Best practice is 240 watt for the first week and then a 125 watt until moved out of brooder

We just tape a piece of plastic over it and let it sit dry for at least 2 days before we use it

Hi, may I ask for quails, is there anything medical like vaccine or antibiotics that should be given to the birds?
I have some eggs in the incubator that are hatching soon, I have never raised any animal or bird in my life. I didn't find much information about immunizing them from diseases on CZcams. I don't know whether I should give them anything while they are chicks after hatching from the egg or not, and if I don't give them anything, but rather regular feed only, can I eat their eggs or not when they start laying? A lot is going through my head and I think about it constantly because really I have 0 experience with animals and it's my first time. I'm already raising some quails now but I bought them as live birds and they were already laying.

Suggestions for using the warming plates, I already have these from my chickens? Or do you reccomend using the lights?
With warming plates, like I use as well, you will adjust the height on them ever few days, where by week 3, the height is higher than the chicks. It mimics having a hen to keep them warm.
I personally like the lights but some use the plates with no issues. For the first week just keep the feed and water close

@@MyshireFarm and the plywood doesn't get wet when you spay it? I suppose the heat would evaporate the wet wood fast enough, but I wouldn't want moldy wood under there. I like the plywood idea because it's cheap and easy. Perhaps it could be painted with liquid rubber before attaching the aluminum.
My first time I discovered they tend to sleep and drown in their water in so very low and add frequently.

I just hatchet some quail and brooding them but I want to know when to remove them from the brooder house.
At this time of year about 3-4 weeks. Closer to 4 weeks and then they are good to go outside.
One of my quail has been sitting on eggs. She has gone broody. I know this isn't normal. I am just letting her sit and see what happens. I figured they might try and start hatching on the 31st or 1st. Do you think I should try and let her raise them or take them out and put in brooder? That is if any hatch.
Most that have a broody hen the hen usually takes care of the chicks

@@courtneesdad .She sat on them for the right amount of days. None of them hatched. Maybe she was trying to sit on to many and maybe not a good constant temp. It could be they weren't fertile even though we have a roster. She tried. Maybe next time if she goes broody

I am not a big fan of heat plates for quail as they grow so fast

We do 1 cup per 30-50 for chicks
