I put my first in my first batch of the year on March 26. The roosters had been consistently crowing for a few weeks. The pipping started in the evening of Easter Sunday. Had five hatch during the night. As of this morning, 46 of 60 have hatched and been moved into the brooder box. I know one wasn't fertile because it cracked when I was moving them for lockdown. Still 13 unhatched in the incubator. I am in central Alabama so it's been a bit warmer here than in Missouri.

My quail eggs are about 1 1/2 weeks after we got a male. Toran, our male, has foam. Do you think our quail eggs will be fertilized? Also, if we candle on the 8th day, will we be able to tell which are fertilized? Love these quail videos! Edit: 21 eggs are fertilized, 3 eggs are NOT fertilized, and 1 egg is fertilized but might be dead. ((25 overall eggs were candled) I candled them today and this was the informantion)

to show the spot on the eggs you need one of those USB microscopes that sell on ebay for about $20.00 they aren't really a microscope more of a magnifier. Just an added safety measure for your brooder area if its in ear shot, put up a smoke detector. I've used a cheap wifi security camera to watch over sensitive farm areas ( brooders, pregnant livestock ). it gives me 12 hours of recording and access to check in on things with a smart phone app
Great video. Chris, I live in Northeast Ohio. How cold of temperatures can quail handle? Have you ever had quail cages in your garage? Overall, how would you rate your emotional & economic returns from raising quail? On a scale from 1 -10?
Thank you. Quail are very cold hardy. Our winters get pretty cold (below 0 F isn't uncommon) and I have never had a problem. I have viewers that live in much colder climates and have no problems with them either. I have raised them in my garage before and it wasn't too bad. Having them outside where the droppings can just fall to the ground is much easier though. As far as the returns, that is pretty subjective. To me, it is worth it. I spend about $20 a month on food for them and they give me more eggs than I can eat and a decent amount of meat.
WARNING don't just clamp your heat lamps in place, wire or tie them in place. I had a friend just clamp her lights and one fell into wood shavings burning down the chicken house killing everything.
hi chris love your videos learing a lot more than when i started a year ago with quail. I have a good few eggs now from my hens but was wondering does the age of the bird effect size of the egg? i have 2 distinct patterns on the eggs one is good size with larger spots, the other is slightly smaller more speckled marking.
I have never noticed the age of the bird affecting the egg size much. Sometimes egg size does vary though. It is usually most common when they first start laying or first start back up after a break. Feed can cause egg size to decrease. if the feed is restricted or not adequate in nutrients.

I’m new to quail - incubating my second batch this weekend! In the process of adapting a chicken coop for them too - will be using your door design! What does it mean to have an immature yolk vs one with at least a dot? I have three 8-week females and I’m pretty sure one is consistently fertile, one is just a white dot/infertile and one is not yet laying. The other two started at about 6 weeks.
Good luck with your hatch. An immature egg is just the first few eggs a quail lays. It really isn't any different than any other egg, it just can't be fertilized. Give your birds a little time and you will start getting many more fertile eggs.
Do you get any unwanted guests (snakes)? If so, do they normally hang around? I think your cages are well built to prevent any intruders from coming in.
We get some snakes from time to time but very rarely any that are big enough to eat a full grown quail. I have never had any problems with them hanging around the quail hutches. I do live in the city though so I don't get as much predator pressure as someone living in the country would. I have had raccoons and foxes try to get into the hutches but so far none have been able to.
Hey Chris do you ever get a broody hen in quails that were artificially incubated? How about you do a video on their behaviour and the male call. I used to have a sole male and it would even call at night!

Hey Chris, I love watching your channel, you give some great tips , I’ve been raising quail about 3 years now , and I’ve noticed you always seem to get eggs in the morning. I’m on my 2nd set of layers now and both set have always laid eggs in the evening, between 5 and 7 . I have my light timed to come on at 6 pm and stay on until 10.30 pm , and I’ve noticed you have yours come on in the AM , do you think this could be the difference in the laying times?
Honestly, I think mine lay mostly in the evening too. I just don't collect them until morning. I don't know that it really makes a difference when the light comes on.
Those are lights he designed. He tried Kickstarter a couple times but couldn't raise enough funds to get them into production. Hopefully he'll find a way to get them going.
Unfortunately, like the others have said, it was lights I designed myself. I had a manufacturer build the prototypes but was unable to get the kickstarter funded so they aren't for sale yet. Hopefully something will work out and I will be able to offer them up for sale soon.
I have a question. I have two quails one male one female. I used to have another female but she was continuous bullying the other female by pecking her on her head to the point where she was getting injured. So we sold that bully female but now we believe that the male has copied that female and now he keeps on pecking the female on her head like the other one did before. How do I get him to stop?
That can be tricky for sure. First of all, are you sure it isn't just breeding behavior? Assuming it isn't, I haven't found a good way to curb an aggressive bird. You might try removing the rooster from the cage for a while (like a week or two) and then putting him back in. He will be a new bird to the flock and that might help keep him in check. Most of the time they do calm down over time though so you might be able to just wait it out.
Nice. Congrats on your new hatch. As long as you don't have too many roosters, I have never found it necessary to remove the roosters to let the hens rest.
Slightly Rednecked why I ask my hens died in the winter looked like beaten up by rooster. I’m putting cat food in their feed now because my feed isn’t good enough I believe I ground the cat food oh my quail are on the porch unheated

My hen was bald queen . I had to separate her for 2 weeks until I arrange 4 more for my monster . After the arrangement he started behaving gently.

Silver Fox are great rabbits. I wouldn't mind having a few of them myself but they are hard to come by in my area.

Nothing wrong with that. You can build your flock up pretty quickly with your own eggs, even if you start out with just a few hens.

I haven't ever had a broody hen. I know it happens from time to time but it isn't common.

What is the lifespan of a captive kept quail?
They can live 6 years or more. I generally replace mine every 2 years at the most though.

It isn't a big problem really. We get some mice from time to time but a few mousetraps usually keep them in check.

Where do you get your Cornish cross chickens. Back in the USA, thinking of quail, rabbit, and some chickens to raise for freezer.

My quail aren’t laying eggs at all and they should they were before I bought them😞
Give them a couple weeks. Changes always cause them to stop for a couple weeks.
I agree with Verna Young, just give them a little time to settle in and they will start laying again.
Maybe they do not get enough light?

Yes. They need 14 hours a day of light to breed (and lay eggs consistently).

I have babies hatching right now 10 17th day so far 24 eggs my male died they’re blonde like him. Are you supposed to take rooster from hens to rest?

Oh no, I am sorry to hear that. If the temp is right you still have a good chance of them hatching. Good luck.
Why not use a dog warming mat? They are thermostatically controled.
I guess that would work. I never found it necessary.
