I am not by any definition a racist. I'm just familiar with the climate and the turbulence of that time. James wrote this song not to exalt his race above others but to lift us to our rightful place alongside others. This performance of this song was a public demonstration that he was not speaking to the people in the audience. With his head held high he was looking forward to the day when those who weren't "allowed" to attend could enjoy his performance side by side with those already in attendance. The afro american were suffering from identity crises , sir Martin Luther king emerge as a leader who fought for their rights, though it was not only the question of their rights but also their self esteem.
