To these hippie-era whites it’s just a song but to us Black Americans (from 1960s to the present day) it’s a self-loving statement. Thank you James Brown (Ancestor)❤️🖤💚

I remember when this song came out. They didn't want this song to exist. A lot of dance shows were afraid to James Brown to sing on their shows. They were afraid what the white people was going to react to the lyrics. But as we can see, the white people love it too. James Brown and others broke down the barriers so that we can perform our music everywhere. Rest easy Mr. Brown and have the all angels sing, I'm Black and I'm Proud. ❤💖🎼🎶🎷🎸🎹🎺🎻🥁

classic old school music my parents and uncles use to listen to! It's amazing that music back 30 and 40's years ago had so much black awareness and realness back in the 70's and 80's what happen to the music and it's a shame that now a days these Rappers and artist soul out not talking about nothing! R.I.P to all the brothers all soliders that's decease!

Marvin Wyche....Amen. Where did all that great soul, blues and funk music go? down the drain. Cause most young people do not have the discipline to play a guitar or learn drums or horns or do anything of value. Too busy selling drugs or working at some deadend job. Which is not they're fault. Back then, blacks fought hard to better themselves, work hard and why do you think the best music anywhere in the world is still black soul, blues and funk music from the good old U.S.A.from back in the day. It still reigns supreme. and always will. Wish they would turn on the Ohio Players Live, 1974 version of FIRE and click on the one with the guy sitting at his drums - tight horns, dancin tight yellow pants, funky as hell and everyone in that band had Great Voices. I love the tight yellow pants cause it screams we came here to put on a show, play the shit out of it so get used to it. Then the camera pans the audience and they are so high they cant move. Typical. But the Ohio Players did it up right and notice the homage to the Adams Family at the beginning and that annoying fire engine blaring will stop after the intro. Tell me whatchya think. .

I am not by any definition a racist. I'm just familiar with the climate and the turbulence of that time. James wrote this song not to exalt his race above others but to lift us to our rightful place alongside others. This performance of this song was a public demonstration that he was not speaking to the people in the audience. With his head held high he was looking forward to the day when those who weren't "allowed" to attend could enjoy his performance side by side with those already in attendance. Check out his appearance on the Mike Wallace show. "Say it loud..." It's self explanatory!

+cori brown Putting it that way Cory, you are right. I have seen the Mike Douglas show. James was one in a million. Like Hendrix. Such amazing talent. you just don't see that drive and commitment today, the record companies are shit. Mr. Gordy, please come back with Stax Records and get it started all over again to groom talent. See Hendrix worked and played every day in 1968 all over the country, crazy schedule, it burns people out.....these icons never made any kind of money compared to what's going on today and I hear no music.

To some people, it doesn't really matter what your song is saying. As long as your singing, dancing, performing, entertaining, it makes no difference, cause it has no significant impact on them anyway. To some people the words are validation of their very identity.
It all depends on who you are, who you believe your self to be, and the Truth and power of your belief.

Give Hugh Hefner his props. He always had a great rapport with the African American Community. Having Alex Haley Interview Malcolm X for Playboy, having Ike & Tina Turner, Bill Cosby and Sammy Davis Jr., as guests on Playboy After Dark, not to mention attending the Motown 25 Special in 1983 with his then girlfriend Shannon Tweed.

It reminds us the time of 1960 while the civil right movement was its peak. The afro american were suffering from identity crises , sir Martin Luther king emerge as a leader who fought for their rights, though it was not only the question of their rights but also their self esteem. This movement started from the phrase " black is beautiful."
