I promise I’m not trying to be patronizing. I grew up as a white person , for all intents and purposes, in the south I. The 70’s and 80’s. When I would learn about the past, it would hurt, and the sense of unfairness would just drive me insane. My family would get on to me about not having a clue and that things that happened weren’t that bad, and people were overreacting now… anyway, did my DNA a couple of years ago, and found out that some of my people were passing for white. My grandmother, who was the most uptight white woman in the world had a black grandmother….. that’s how close in my background it was. Then I wonder if she knew, and was self hating….. I wonder if I reacted like I did as a child because I somehow ‘knew’, it was in my bones, for lack of a better word. Long story short, I just wish things were better today.
