I laughed so hard when he said Avi had competition because Matt was the first bass he experienced 😂😂😂 . Matt is so amazing and I absolutely love him but Avi is OG for real and is a sick bass. Hands down. Keep diving into PTX and you’ll see. But Matt did do a phenomenal job of coming in, stepping up to the challenge, and really bringing his own flavor. He meshes so well with them.

“I didn’t know the human voice could get that low.” There’s actually a guy, Tim Storms, with a 10-octave vocal range-his voice can go so low that you no longer talk audible notes, you talk hertz. There’s a video somewhere with Avi meeting him before a performance, and Avi having stage fright, knowing Tim was in the audience. 🙂

Yep, agree. They do add a BIT on these big produced numbers.
But you see them live and kill it. No, KILL IT.
There is a video out there of Mitch hitting a particular note in Aha, night after night, year after year, and each time its the same key, back vocals sound exactly the same. It could be sliced into one song and you would never know. That is the level of their perfection and production.

If you want to hear DEEP notes, check out “Oogie-Boogie Song” by VoicePlay. Their bass is Geoff Castellucci, and he’s a basso PROFUNDO, same as Avi Kaplan (PTX former bass) and Tim Foust of Home Free. Basso PROFUNDO are basses that can sing a full octave below the standard bass range. Tim Foust has a 5+octave range. Geoff Castellucci has close to a 5 octave range. This video were recommending has him singing lead, and going very very low (the “growl” register) and all the way back up to a tenor range!!

The studio version of "Natural Disaster" is audio only, but there are several videos of phone recordings from concerts on CZcams - in one of them (the one where Scott is wearing a red and black plaid shirt) there's a section where you can barely hear Scott singing because Avi's low notes cause so much distortion in the speakers.

They formed the group to go on the sign off and they won. (It's really worth watching the videos from the show.) The thing that most impresses me is that they do all their own arranging and they do it on the fly. They don't write it down. They have a guy in LA who works with them and I think he helps do some of the arranging.
By the way, their Christmas albums are epic.
SOme of their newer vids are really strong. Come Along is fun and Shallow is really moving and features Kevin playing the cello.

They performed this live at a series of 4th of July concerts in 2017 at the Hollywood Bowl. After the performance on the first night you can see Scott go ‘whew’ and wipe his brow. They had wanted to do this for several years. They had done a snippet of it in their Evolution of Music video several years earlier, but weren’t sure they could do the whole song and do it well. Yup, Avi Caplan's BASS is one of the sickest smoothest basses around today. And Mitch's contra-tenor is definitely one of the cleanest I have ever heard. Kevin's beat box skills are always on point. The whole group is super talented.

I think some of the highest praise was that the great Brian May tweeted out a link to their video. I also love that they paid an homage to him with the shooting stars, since he's an astrophysicist, and the 4 shooting stars for the 4 members of Queen, who are rightfully stars that so many look up to as inspiration.

If you want to see how they don't need post-production, watch the cover of "Gold" by Kiiara. It's just them on a sofa with mics and they do it up. If I'm not mistaken, Avi is a basso profundo, which is why his range is so incredible. I'm still not over his leaving. I adore his voice.

The original group was: the tall blond guy is Scott Hoying-Baritone; the girl is Kirstin Maldonado, Mezzo-Soprano; they guy doing lead on this song is Mitch Grassi, Counter-Tenor; the bearded guy is Avi Kaplan, Basso-Profundo; the Beatboxer is Kevin Olusola, Tenor/Cellist/Cellist-Beatboxer. The original Bass singer left for personal reasons, and he recommended Matt Sallee as the next Basso-Profundo.
