How to fix a car DVD player and save💲💰💲

- My overhead dvd player in my van stopped working right before our cross country roadtrip and so I had to find some way to fix it. this video documents how I did it myself.
The Challenge: Fix the car DVD player before we go on vacation.
The Problem: I almost caught the car on fire.
The Solution: A simple and inexpensive trick that everyone should know about.
ultimately, I ended up buying a used DVD player from a junkyard and that proved to be the best option. it was still a challenge, but it is totally doable for even a beginning DIYer.

What state do you live in. I'm in Idaho boise area and the junk yards here you pull things off yourself, $1.00 for the day get what ya want. Now what's wrong with my DVD player in the dash (2006 T&Country dodge grand caravan) dvd is stuck and all the lights to set it are all flashing and a dvd will not go in. 🤔🤨🧐 any suggestions please..

My vans dvd just went out and we have a vacation coming up too! We ordered the ribbon and will see if that is the problem and if not I’m making calls to some junk yards. So glad I saw this video. Thank you for sharing
I’m fairly surprised at the fact it’s also a town & country… which means this is probably a common error with the dvd players they chose to use. Googled answers on van dvd player not playing, saw your video (thinking one van was probably similar to another)… shocked it’s the same van with the same darn problem.
Our town&country's DVD player went out also! I we've lost both of the same side panels!

Read the comments and watch the video you suggested in one of the comments. Great video. One person says you did this about 5 times. Wow. You know your stuff know. Suggest offering this service since you are experienced and charging a lower rate. I have a Honda pilot don't know if I will do this because just thinking of buying a portable dvd player with all i got going on these days. So glad you did the video. Fyi to do this one time takes 60 to 90 minutes per the other video. Congratulations on getting it done.
Making repairs you've never tried before can be really scary but like you said take your time, use some ingenuity and you can get through it. Good luck with your new channel. I got here from Outdoors with the Morgans

i have a 2005 yukon XL and im having a problem with mine working. it just says “Disc format error” i got a dvds from a 2005 and it still wont work i dont know how to pull it down and check it out but do u have some suggestions to help me?

I bought a car that has the exact model of the DVD player but the Dome light works but I don’t know how to turn it on. The car has some sort of wall plug that I’m guessing powers the DVD player. And also the AV In cables yellow red and white. How do I turn it on? My car model is a Toyota Highlander 2013 Limited

In my 2014 town and country, the middle DVD won’t turn on, but the back one does work. I think we used the middle one the most, and the flat plastic wire might have gone wrong.

Hi Dave I liked the video. Do you know if your caravan has the 2nd screen on the 3rd. seat? If Not, does the console has the wire to change the compartiment and add a screen? Just buying a 2nd screen-
Hi Jose. My van does not have a 2nd screen in the third seat, but I believe that it wouldn't be too difficult to add one in. The biggest challenge would be figuring out how to tap in to the existing wiring, but if I remember right, I believe that there was a place to plug in a cord for the third row screen. You would just need the screen and the cord and a way to attach it. It would be tough to figure it out without seeing an example of how it is done. Perhaps you could find one at a junkyard somewhere and take one apart to see how it goes together. Good luck! Thanks for watching!

I got it from a junkyard near Pittsburgh, PA. It was a few years ago so I don't remember the name. Just look up local junkyards and call them to see if they have a model if your car that has a dvd player. Mine actually came out of a WV van even though mine is a Chrysler. In the old days junkyards would let you just wander around and pull out what you wanted and pay at the end, but nowadays they have to pull it for you. It was nice to do it yourself because you could practice taking it apart and see better how it all goes together. Good luck!

our rear VES will turn on, but not the front one which was used a lot more. all signs lead to this ribbon.
I think you are right. I just have the front one, but as I understand it they are fed by the same connections, except for that ribbon. Good luck!
My DVD player on my gmc yukon denali 06 my dvd player keep ejected my dvd movie by itself what could happen bad motor or do i have to clean the lenses
On mine, when opened the radio stations show. When you put a movie in the rear screen goes blank or black.
That sounds more like a software issue to me than a hardware issue. For me no signal at all was getting to the tv. I'm not sure exactly what your problem could be.
I have a DVD Player in my Dodge 2014 I just bought with no remote. I can't get it to come on Do you think I need another system or can I still use the one that came with the Vehicle?

You could try to fix the ribbon first if you like. That was what I tried originally. The benefit though of getting a used dvd player is that you don't have to open up the unit and mess with the electronics and risk doing it wrong. With the used one you just plug the whole thing in and dont have to worry about the rest. The work to pull off the top console and pull out the dvd player is exactly the same.

Were all the screens not working?
My van has only one screen aside from the main console up front. Some models have two screens in the back. If more than one screen is not working it is likely an issue affecting the whole system and not just the connecting ribbon on one screen.
What is your car year model
Its a 2014 chrysler town and country. I believe that it is essentially the same model as the dodge caravan and the vw routan.
I have a 2015 Chrysler towne and country and my dvd player screen just went completely black and never worked again :( help!!!
Hi Alyson, my van is a 2014 Town and Country and so it is essentially the same model. The most common problem with the dvd player is that the ribbon that connects the screen to the electronics in the car gets crimped and stops working over time after being opened and closed repeatedly. As depicted in the video, I tried replacing the ribbon and had issues. My suggestion is that you call a junkyard and buy the entire player like I did. My junkyard charged $50 and my replacement actually came out of a Dodge Caravan which also have the same screen (same with the VW Routan). That way you don't have to fiddle with the electronics other than taking the old one out and plugging the new one in. That was still a challenge, but it worked. You can ignore all the stuff about the ribbon, but between that video and my video it should give you a good idea as to how to get the top console removed. It is a challenging DIY project, but totally doable and worth it because a dealership would charge $1200+ to fix it for you. Good luck! Joking aside, any time you remove anything electrical out of a car. Always and I mean Always disconnect the battery terminal cables from the battery.

I don't know exactly, but it must have been some kind of electrical short. I am certain that I installed the wire correctly and so I think the part may have been faulty, but I'm also not an electrician and so it could have been my fault. That is why I ended up buying a whole new unit at a junkyard. That way I could just plug in the whole thing and I didn't have to fiddle with the insides.

How many screws are in the console ?
It has been so long now that I don't remember exactly, but i think that it was 8.
I got all the screws and got it down and replaced the ribbon and now it is still black...any ideas what I could have done wrong?
It depends. Did you replace just the ribbon or did you replace the entire screen? If you did the ribbon then the most likely cause is that the ribbon may have been put in backwards in which case you would have to pull it all down and do it again 🤮. If it was an entire screen it may not have been plugged in all the way or it could be faulty. If that is not it then I am afraid that there could be some other electrical thing going on that is beyond my expertise. Good luck,!

I can't shut off the DVD player
If all you want to do is shut off the player you can unplug the large plug that connectd it to the car. You would still have to remove the roof console to get to it. The sound would still work. The tv would not work again until it is reconnected.
If the player is not shutting off even after using the controls on the console and the remote then it is probably a separate technical and/or software problem unrelated to the player itself. You may need to take it in to someone.
