Star Wars AT-AT Walkers in Unreal Engine

  • My AT-AT's have left the confines of Autodesk Maya, traversing the vast expanse of their local PC hard drives to find a new home in Unreal Engine. Just checking in on them to see how they're doing.
    Software:
    Maya
    Unreal Engine 5.3
    DaVinci Resolve 18.6
    Adobe Photoshop
    Adobe Illustrator
    Rig:
Mine, I built it in Maya.
Made entirely by Jeremy Cummins using Unreal Engine 5.3, Autodesk Maya and DaVinci Resolve 18.6 . It took about two months not including the rig creation.

It's so rare to see the wild AT-AT in it's natural habitat. Untouched by man's hand. Now, if only we could capture the birth of these majestic creatures, that would be something.

As a person from outside the animation community, I am purely astonished by the possibilities of Unreal Engine nowadays. A talented person can create worlds and build narration which is visually on par with movies. If I just recall stop motion Lego SW clips done cleverly by my son... Makes me think that on some planets that the Empire showed up on, depending on the intelligence and technology level of the inhabitants, some AT-AT drivers may actually try and make their AT-AT’s look like living creatures; using loudspeakers to play animal sounds, shaking the heads like beasts, maybe using some sort of external red light to make the “eyes” glow. I’d like to imagine that some planets may have pests that could infiltrate an AT-AT’s circuitry or systems so they “shake” the walkers to eject any unwanted visitors, sending the intrusive guests tumbling off or getting crushed by the moving machinery.

Just picked up my Meta Quest 3 (which is okay but nearly identical to the 2) and some genius has developed a program that takes anything on Unreal Engine and practically automatically converts it into VR. I’ve used it for a couple of games and it’s still a work in progress but man, I can’t wait to check out the new engine in VR.

Is this what Star wars Outlaws is going to look like? Oh wait! It's being made by Ubisoft.
Never mind, it'll look just like far cry 5😮

They look amazing but they feel weightless. Something that size wouldn't be so snappy. You have to somehow animate the concept that the parts are working so hard in a struggle to move such a titanic beast of metal and bolts across gravity. I almost imagine it like trying to move as fast and hard as you can under water, muscles screaming and stretching and burning under the dense weight.
