A quick disclaimer - A lot of these videos use information from the witcher wiki, in some cases I do read directly from the pages, I do always make sure to include my own thoughts and other information I know myself, but I just want to make sure everyone is on the same page here. Even though I use information from the wiki, I do still create the videos, with time, effort and a lot of editing! The idea behind the lore videos is to present to information to you guys in a fun and more interesting way then you guys having to get the information from pages and read it yourself. If anyone isn't okay with this I apologise, but since day one I have always said where I get the information from. Thank you for reading.
Detlaff didnt just squat an abandoned toy shop. That was his home/business. Just as barber-surgeon was Regiis' profession, Detlaff was a toymaker or fixer-upper of broken odds and ends.
If he could only fix his broken heart when he realizes that he was the toy in Syanna hands...
@@WhiteWolf-di2nh dude that's straight up symbolism like fuck details in this game is absolutely awesome still give me chills until now
Not really, Detlaff quite literally squatted in there as since the letters, Syanna and Regis both say he lived in Nazair. It was just his hideout.
I always feel Dettlaff was so harshly wronged
He's 400 years old.
Gotta learn to read people
Sure, he was taken advantage of, but the last time a woman lied and tried to use me, I didn't reduce an entire city to rubble while killing everyone on sight... Just saying.
@@FallenPasha Vampires aren't human, humans have different culture and different reactions.
I spill soup on you, I apologize, we're both on a rough footing but we know how to move forward like mature adults.
I spill soup on a vampire? _So you've chosen death_
@@FallenPasha Yeah but you kill a mosquito for buzzing around you too long.
Humans are basically insects to vampires, cattle at most. Them going on a rage and killing a few people is like you swatting a bunch of mosquitoes ruining your nights rest. Humans and vampires cannot be compared, they are very different beings. So him killing a bunch of people is only bad in human eyes. Other monsters, vampires, spirits and even "the gods" pay it no mind. Hell Humans outside of Toussaint don't even care what's happening there.
Geralt only really cares because he's on a job. If he wasn't hired to do something, he wouldn't do anything other than offer advice because it's not affecting him or those he cares about. Plus, there's a deeper reason other than a woman using him..
@@Your-Least-Favorite-Stranger
No, spill soup on Regis and he will find you a rude asshole if you don't say sorry, but that will be the end of it. They are CLEARLY equally capable of handling their emotions just like humans are, but choose not to.
Poor Dettlaff... All because he fell in love with the wrong woman...
Tbh Dettlaff is crazy. If the woman didn't enrage him, another thing would do. And would be a threat anyway. He had to die.
@@Daniel-fh2ci how do you know ? its not proper to judge the life of a character like that , as if he is destined to commit atrocities. Your , nay , our morals are humanistic morals . Higher vampires are almost impulsive and passionate creatures , who usually prefer to stay alone . Detlaff is a farcry from being evil , the way he regrets killing and how he killed a fiend as revenge for killing the boy who offered him apple is a good indication that he is not evil. Many good men do bad deeds when they are engulfed in peculiar circumstances.
@@legendaysupersaiyan Okay, but for vampiric standards, compared to Regis, he is just out of place. Dude, Dettlaff in a span of anger killed his past lover and half of a capital city, full of innocent people. How can you overlook that? he went too far and was going to go even further beyond if Geralt didn't kill him right there, he had to be slayed. Because he was no more a innocent monster. What would have been next, kill all the continent because why not? because you are angry? no dude. There are limits. Dettlaff wasn't a evil monster, but he was just crazy and uncontroled. And didn't care about anything.
@@Daniel-fh2ci crazy and uncontroller can be tamed . I just wanted to point out that he was not outright evil . His bestiary even showed that he wanted to die due to all that remorse.
Syanna was the evil abettor in the entire game.
Also understand the ways and methods of higher vampire is nothing but reflection of humans , who usually destroy an entire batch due to one wrong apple. Its a take on how we treat species inferior to us , and what if a species superior to us were to treat us as cattle or something untrustworthy.
@@Daniel-fh2ci And here comes the typical, glorious specimen of Homo sapiens, judging others by his species' point of view.
Dettlaff's unique ability was how he bonds with lesser vampires. Regis can turn into a big bat but he never does this in the game it is displayed on his gwent card in the witcher 3 though
I thought Regis' unique ability was to communicate with birds? Dettlaff changes into something that could easily be described as a big bat, so I doubt that's a unique thing to Regis.
Yeah it wasn't my intention to say the bat thing was unique to regis it was more of a response to how witchergeorge said that detlaff's monster form might be his unique ability. And i never looked at detlaff's monster form as a bat but now that u say it it does make sense.
I already replied to a similar comment but I believe that all higher can do that
When Regis describes Dettlaff's unique ability: "[...] his trump card is his herd instinct, his tribal propencity. He prefers the company of lesser vampires and shuns that of humans." Which would explain why lesser vampires listen to him, and why Dettlaff is so reserved and naiv when acting with humans.
And Regis' ability is besides his inteligence his sense of empathy, pointed out by Geralt when first meeting Regis in the DLC. This is the reason he helped Geralt in the books without wanting anything in return, and why he comes to Beauclair in the first place, knowing something is wrong with Dettlaff and that his friend needs him.
(Be kind with my grammar, it's not my native language ^.^ )

Im still at novigrad chasing siri storyline. Ive met (and killed) a higher vampire but he didn’t have wings. He just turns (predator) invisible. He’s called a katakan.. what’s the difference?
@@yusukeyurameshi2482 there's an ongoing debate as to if CDPR made an error because katakans are classed as a lower class vampire
Unless the vampire just classed himself as a higher vampire
Amnesia Haze yes he said he’s a higher kind.. the quest is “carnal sins”
Dettlaf has to be one of my favorite characters in all the witcher games.

Dettlaff: ... Yes.

I realised getting the ribbon saves Syanna and dooms Dettlaff when she disappears, so I made sure that Syanna and Anarietta didn't get a happy ending by making sure they both died. You don't get to screw over everyone and get a happy ending. Not on my watch.
When I played B&W I got mad at the Duchess because when it came to Dettlaff and Syanna she was a complete idiot. She didn't want to release her sister to go meet with Dettlaff, which would have saved countless lives. Even after being told Dettlaff is a higher vampire and therefore almost impossible to kill and track. I mean she actually meets Dettlaff and says she could sense his sadness but is still like "just kill him". Plus, no matter which ending she is WAY too trusting of her sister.
It wasn't trust. It was guilt. She felt she needed to protect her sister at all costs (to the point of making no sense) as some wayward compensation for having the 'better' life than her sister.
Love is blind man thats why it doesnt make sense
She is in denial. She literally said HE IS A GOOD MAN. but when she finds out that Syanna is behind all - she flips sides and go full war mode. fockin hypocrites. They never learn. War against a higher vampire... really Anna, really ?
White Wolf Anna probably reasoned that, like any sane person would, Detlaff needed to be killed anyway because he was not only a threat to humanity, but nearly destroyed Beauclair over one person. Syanna had very valid reasons for doing what she did as she was tossed away, beaten, abused, nearly killed, then left for dead by the very people who had once sworn to protect her. Not sure why you think Detlaff wanting to murder hundreds of thousands to get revenge on one person makes him innocent but Syanna accidentally causing it by getting revenge on people who actually did her wrong.
@@Hakakuno Sane person ? hah funny.
Humanity ? Oh, my dear, if you think that half a city is humanity then you really don't know how many people die in the wars, on the battlefields and of diseases. Humanity... all of them full of hatred, rudeness, hypocrisy, rotten inside, not able to give love and not able to care for anything else rather than themselves. They kill each other for land. They kill for petty reasons. They have done it to themselves. And you call that humanity ?
You should definitely do a character lore video on Regis. Also there’s a *tiny* thing on Dettlaff that you didn’t mention, which was if you talk to Regis right after the blackmailing cutscene in Detlaff’s home, Regis will tell you a bit about his youth and how he gave into peer pressure with blood (this is likely how he became addicted. Akin to that of a teenager becoming addicted to alcohol due to peer pressure) and trying impress his circle of friends and how he was popular. Anyway he mentioned that because of his popularity, he and Dettlaff became acquainted (but eventually their paths diverged) and how Dettlaff didn’t approve of Regis and his friends being childish- “guzzling blood” and “turning into bats to scare ladies”, suggesting that in their youth, he was more mature than Regis and his friends and wasn’t easily swayed due to peer pressure.
Damn. CDPR did an amazing job with Dettlaff. I mean, his character designer even named him after her.
The people who spared Dettlaff are the people who have had their loved ones betray them or have gone through a very similar situation. It either takes a HUGE amount of empathy to spare him or you had physically feel the pain he’s gone through.
I've gone through a similar situation of someone betraying me (rather a group of friends) it hurt ans I felt resentment towards them for years.
I chose to kill Dettlaff because I believe Geralt character would do so.
@@lofiz2646 I don’t think Geralt in character would kill him for the simple fact that if He can’t Regis has to kill him and that’s against higher vampire law which will intern make can be hunted down and killed
@@nathanharrison7681 I don’t think geralt would allow detlaff to kill synna though just like that
Dettlaff is immortal and can be redeemed, Syanna is a manipulative cunt and if it weren't for the contractual obligation to save her, letting her die is only fair. Most important of all, saving Dettlaff also means stopping Regis from being forever shunned by his vampire brethren (though arguably that was his own decision). For that reason alone, saving Dettlaff is the best option
If you let Dettlaff live, Regis wouldn't be hunted down and Detlaff might change under Regis's guidance. That ending seems more fitting in my opinion.
Yeah honestly I think that that ending should be the canon one
Regis doesnt get hunted hes told to leave toussaint by the elder vampire
Bobby Sandhu he does get hunted. In the epilogue there are bruxas and other lesser vampires who attack him because they can sense he is near. He needs to leave for a very long time in order not to be sensed and therefore hunted
Dettlaff doesn't try to change, he leaves Beuclair and goes ''far from men''.
Nah fuck dettlaff
Detlaff deserves so much better.. If I'm not mistaken I remember that higher vampires mate for life and he clearly felt like he was mated to Rhena. Having her disappear on him isn't something his nature could understand - and finding out she was being held captive and he had to kill his best human friend must have been so traumatic.. And then discovering none of it was true. His mate just got sick of him and used his love to make him a murderer...
Nah, Syanna was the real beast in this story. Detlaff was just trying to live a normal life
Edit: I also have to disagree with you that he's short tempered, he does briefly lash out at Syanna when the truth is revealed but he quickly realizes he's getting worked up and leaves to get some space and clear his head. All while offering his lover to meet him in the only place with a cage capable of holding back an enraged higher vampire to tell him her side of the story. So I think he would have heard her out but once the timer was up he gave up hope that she'd even show up and lost it. Syanna wanted a murderer and she got one
There's that person I was looking for in the crowd of enraged Homo sapiens specimens, judging Dettlaff by their glorious, openminded point of view.
Thanks for that comment! I approve and I agree.
Syanna was locked up. It was Anna's fault.
If you played the land of fables, you'd find out that syanna was ok to meet Dettlaff. But she was trapped in the magic book.
Doesn't excuse massacring a city over a petty reason. Syanna was made into a monster too, and while manipulative, only took the lives of four child abusers.
He honestly deserved better
Dettlaff is my favourite character (besides Eskel), my first play through of Blood and Wine was really upsetting because I didn't know that you could let Dettlaff live, so I got the ribbon for Syanna and after the battle was done I sat there staring at the tv crying, yes I literally cried because I killed Dettlaff, don't judge ok, I didn't know he could live until after I saved my game and looked it up.
Divin3 Titan You shouldn’t feel bad for crying at all. Did you see Geralt’s face when he turns towards the camera as Regis finishes off Detlaff? Even the supposedly emotionless, ultimate badass Witcher looked like he wanted to cry.
Nick Camacho I know and that didn't help either, it was so heartbreaking I didn't cry when Vesemir died but I cried when Dettlaff died, I haven't really touched the Witcher 3 since then maybe I should do a second run through and this time not get that stupid ribbon for Sylvia/Syanna
I just knew we would have the option to kill him as I played through the dlc and i kept telling myself, no i wont kill him... but i also fell for that damned ribbon. I had no idea either that something so insignificant would lead to an entirely different ending. I also cried, and even after a year of playing the dlc, still feel heartbroken. I actually also accidentally killed Henrietta at the end cause i failed to warn her that Sianna was going to kill her.. so i got an even worse ending... but now that im way too far into the game, theres no going back for me unless I start a new game. Probably will in the future
Jazz Jazzington same, I wish I knew before hand not to get that stupid ribbon and I would have left it with the little girl, I also got Henrietta kill and I just sat and was like "Could anything else go wrong?" I just went from Blood and Wine to Hearts of Stone dlc to distract me from Dettlaff's death
SAME! I did BiW first too cause I just really wanted to do it first.. glad i did or id have been more heartbroken knowing ive finished the game
I spared Detlaff, let him kill the manipulator and Regis he kinda assures you that he's really not a bad guy.Regis and Detlaff are like blood brothers too, well least I think.
Cool, you chose the worst ending. Congratulations.
@@balabanasireti The worst ending is choosing the woman because you're a simp.
@Respiratory Failure
The worst ending is letting a genocider get away scot free with it cause you're an incel.
The good ending is actually the worst ending.
True! Love Deathlaff! AND hate tha fact that the game makes u kill him when u got the ribbon!
wtf game ?!@ it's just unfair, cause he is not the bad guy in the story. He is just betrayed and lied and that little bitch used him!
Cvetelina Georgieva The fuck? Murdering hundreds of innocent people makes you a bad guy.
It's true that his girlfriend lied and manipulated him but that doesn't mean he get's to try and destroy an entire city! He's really more of a dangerous and unstable individual than an actual villain but still someone who needed to be stopped.
Vito Grande No, he does not deserve this, it's true that he can not use nuances, but Syana knew this and used it, in the end the villain is Syana.
I felt bad for him until the point where he thought it was okay to exterminate an entire civilization because his ex betrayed him.
God I love that final fight with Detlaff probably the best boss fight in the Witcher 3 imo
On every one of my playthroughs I couldn't kill Dettlaff, I felt so sorry for him, he was tricked by someone he loved, I couldn't do it even when I was at such a high level that it would be easy.
holly gemma I think you gotta do it at least once to experience the best boss fight of the game. First time I fought him his transformation literally gave me chills and I felt scared of him. No other monster in the game actually scared me.
OK I'm currently replaying blood and wine again, I'll try the fight ending : )
I felt horrible for killing Detlaff, but on my first playthrough I got the ribbon and couldn't avoid it.
I get what you are saying but come on...
My pity on him reached its limit when he unleashed an army of bloodthirsty vampires on thousands of innocents.
I killed him everytime. If Syanna was the only sacrifice, i might have taken a different path but the whole city of Beauclair?
Nah, Dettlaff deserves death.
@@axel9473 I think if you share a world with higher vampires you are obligated to not f***ing emotionally traumatize them like Syanna did, for the sake of your race. If there's a lion sleeping in the bush, don't swat at them. If you do and they attack you and your village, that doesn't mean killing the lion is justified. It means you provoked something you shouldn't have and blamed it for its nature - in a world you both are equally deserving of inhabiting and calling "home".
On my second playthrough i chose the ending of letting detlaff live. I did this because of what happens to Regis if you choose to kill detlaff. Due to the rule of higher vampires not killing eachother Regis is cast out by other vampires. I'm unsure if this is forever but either way it would be for a very long period of time which i hated to imagine regis having to endure. Although if you choose the 'best ending' Geralt is seen in a much higher light and not hated so its down to opinion but that's mine.
The exile is forever as Vampires are Inmortal, more so Higher vampires as only another can kill them. And like Regis said once " Vampires have a different sense of time than humans"
personally I got the impression most vampires are jerks, if they weren't then I am sure that Regis would have way more vampire friends than Defflaft so if the other vampires shun him it really doesn't matter because they shun each other already as it is, I just wish all the vampires could get together and put the stuck up unseen elder in his place
@@smass8586 the thing is, regis was not only expelled but probably hunted by other higher vampires and I dont want my homie to fight for his life every now and then
I offered Regis to go to Kaer Morhen.
@@justanothergamer1068 He isn't exactly hunted...he is attacked by some Bruxae at the epilogue, but they are hardly a threat to a a higher vampire. Basically, he is just exiled from their society. As i understand it, they just ignore him-out of sight, out of mind.
Dettlaff is such a complicated character. I may be wrong of course, but I see him as autistic. Genuinly autistic. His short temper and 'simplistic' way of thinking, that he's led around by the nose by Syanna. And he's a super-strong vampire. On one hand it's kinda tragic if you kill him when it feels like he didn't know better...*and he's a higher vampire*.
Higher vampires can do good, they can just go about their own devices and not cause harm or trouble, or they can be monsters. I don't feel that Dettlaff's a monster. But he is most definately a risk due to his mental state.
There is no 'win' scenario in Blood and Whine, but I see the best ending as letting Dettlaff get away...Regis is a good guy and can probably help him along. Syanna on the other hand knew what she was doing...she had a lot of time to think better of things, and she didn't, so I think she deserves to die.
You truly become a monster by choice, not heritage.
He's not autistic at all, he's very volatile and doesn't quite understand how humans work, and how they lie and deceive, something I can relate to, but trust me, l know what I'm talking about with autism, he definitely doesn't have it or is even close
@@MiguelAlatorreMusic I could have worded it better I suppose. I don't think he actually is autistic, but that's the sort of behaviour he displays, and it's something I personally understand as an autistic person.
It's entirely different reasons, and by no means is Detlaff innocent in what he does, but he was used by Syanna.
@@OpticalArxenal autistic generally means a delay in social skills, with vampires he's very popular, however trying to fit in with another species and not isolate is incredibly difficult, even for regis, I don't think it's autism, it's the feeling of never being yourself, cause he really can't be himself, like if you were one of few humans on a planet full of millions of aliens, it would be incredibly difficult to adapt
@@MiguelAlatorreMusic That can very much feel like it does for some autistics. Because one processes things differently compared to neurotypical people, so it feels like you don't belong, despite wanting company.
I'm not particularly social, but I have known some autistics who really liked socializing, it was just really hard for them because they didn't percieve or react to some things like their normal friends did.
I have difficulty reading people I don't know, I have a hard time picking up sarcasm and jokes unless it's really overt, and even then it can missread hard.
Autism isn't a hard list of traits. But it can very well translate into an autist feeling isolated and alone because they don't understand the people they're among.
That's all I meant with it, how I percieved it, I just worded it poorly.
@@OpticalArxenal ah I see, I kinda get what you mean
You can actually let Dettlaff live. If you find him without Syanna's ribbon he will kill her and you get the option to let him live. You never see him again, but he is alive. Regis also gets to stay, seeing as he didn't have to kill another vampire. You will be thrown into jail, and then freed by Dandelion. You will not get any of the reward, but Regis stays and Dettlaff lives
Yeah I get that ending, but I always feel as if I'm not welcome in toussaint after that
yeah. Only reason that it's even kinda worth it is bc Regis stays. As much as I love Regis I wouldn't choose it, bc with the good ending everyone (except Dettlaff) lives. You get a fuckload of money and you're pretty much loved by everyone in Toussaint
I was trying to let Dettlaff kill Syanna, but I didn't know giving her the ribbon would prevent that. So literally the opposite of what I wanted to happen actually did
Playing on Death March accidentally(too late when I realized since I was playing along with the settings and only realized why the enemies were so strong) then seeing them help me massacre the guards when storming the castle made me truly understand why Witchers rarely take on contract against higher vampires.
There was once a guy who posted a theory wich I like and tend to consider it canon. That it was never showed to us that Regis really destroyed Detlaff's hand and later Regis could help Detlaff regenerate from the hand like he did for him when he was some ash. And while he does that Detlaff can calm down and figure things out like Regis has done when some villigers killed him.(Sorry for my rubish english
The ”good ending” is the worst ending, the main villain, Syanna, gets of scott-free, and her dumbass naive sister who caused MANY unnecessary deaths remains the perfect queen
Thus I always tell syannna that what she did was indefensible
It's almost like it's a complicated and grey world. Would killing the sisters change anything? Not really. There isn't a "good" ending in this game.
The deaths were entirely caused by Dettlaff's tantrum and Syanna STILL goes to jail (as opposed to dettlaff who actually wants to get off Scott free with his casual genocide)
Unrepentant genocider dies, repented blackmailer jailed - sounds good to me
@@alqamenesh7433 Honestly, wrote this two years ago and my opinion has changed, however I definitely don’t think it’s entirely on Detlaff’s hands, I think it’s on the whole trio, while I understand his anger, obviously the attack on the city was extreme, Anna knew what would happen if she protected Syanna, who completely deserved being put to death by Dettlaff, and Syanna ofc was the one who tricked him from the start,
So I think it’s on all of them and all 3 deserve death
Fair enough mate
I love Dettlaff's character so much and feel really sorry for him
I want Dettlaff to get out of this alive but once he launch an all out attack on the city, he crossed a line.
I feel like that is a cheap plot line but regardless Dettlaff need to die by my hand. I willing to tolerate few death but an entire city full of innocent folk, women & children. No this is no longer just a contract. You make it personal. Syanna may be the real beast but Dettlaff is a monster too!
I like Dettlaff, he is great and I really didn't want to kill him, but he sent his vampire army on a city-lot's of people kinda died there. So he had to die.
me too
A lot of people died because of the stupid Duchess and her fuckin ignorance.
Honestly, I don't think he wanted too. I think he was making an idle threat and was sure Syanna would come for him, but Anna Henrietta just HAD to lock her up she's the true culprit here, not listening and being ignorant as hell. Dettlaff couldn't make it seem his threat was idle so he told the vampires to attack the city.
QuantumBlazar No... Detlaff, like most vampires see humans as... animals, cattle to drink their blood.
@@WhiteWolf-di2nh May be. A Duchess means she has responsibility.. She can't just send her criminals to a vampire knowing they might die.. Also because Duchess is as much emotional as Dettlaff... Both loved Syanna.. And Duchess is the reason she got banished even though the curse was a reason, it only ostracised her, not enough to send her on a exile.. So, it's people defending what they love... If one can forgive Dettlaff for killing hundreds of innocents because he was betrayed, they can surely understand the predicament Duchess was in too...
I never did consider Dettlaff to be the Beast of Beauclair. I consider the one calling the shots to be the beast- that is, Syanna. My only conflict comes with what Dettlaff does, when he learns he was lied to. If he hadn't gone to such extremes, I wouldn't consider him a villain at all. Either way, he was easily the most compelling character in the expansion.
A few years out but I suspect that the aim of the story was that there was not one beast, but three. Syanna, Henrietta and Dettlaff. The problem is the canon ending allowed the two biggest beasts to survive without facing the consequences of their actions.
Thanks for all the videos brotha! Keep them coming, and I'll keep watching, lol.
I trade Syanna for his Life and spared Regis the hard choice.
Can sleep peacefully
Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Dettlaff the Vengeful? I thought not, it's not a story The Witchers would tell you, It's a Toussaint Legend. Dettlaff Van Der Eretein was a Higher Vampire so old and so powerful, he made the King of The Wild Hunt look like child's play. Dettlaff had fallen in love with a human woman, who when she disappeared from his life, he was convinced she was kidnapped. He was greeted with letters telling of her being held hostage and in order to free her, he would have to kill 5 Toussaint nobleman in an act of Vengeance.
Little did he know that the kidnapper was his beloved who had used him from the start, in a mad fit of rage he killed her but was soon struck down by Geralt of Rivia and Regis, a Vampire who's life he had saved.
Ironic... his most impactful accomplishments was always done because of others, but not for himself.
I see ya, fellow Star Wars Fan
Is it possibile to learn this power?
Regis early on did point out, rather clearly that Dettlaff was very prone to having harshly dramatic, emotional reactions to painful events. He also specified that Dettlaff was unlearned with the complicated, sinful motives that humans possessed...not understanding the nature of trickery, deception, manipulation, etc...Frankly, I believe this sort of unfortunate ignorance gave Dettlaff a type of ethical/moral pass on his reactive behavior. He was the victim of some truly despicable evil-even worse coming from the only woman he ever loved. Humans act crazy from love I mean....so putting a vampire in this scenario should have catastrophic results.
Dettlaffs power has something to do with mind control over lesser vampires I think. I seem to remember Geralt saying something about how lesser vampires don't usually do the bidding of higher vampires when they all start attacking Beauclair.
Robbie Greene exactly. His "alpha" influence is most likely his unique power, especially since Regis put a lot of emphasis on him beaing "beastly" in a way.
Additionally, Regis can transform into a bat-like form in the books, so most likely all Higher Vampires have a unique form.
Dettlaff is such an excellent character.
Isn't Dettlaff's ability meant to be his "Herd propensity"? As in controlling any and all lesser vampires to do his bidding? Doing this through an ability or instinct as opposed to just using his strenght to fear them into submission.
Yeah i thought so to
Kinda like The Unseen Elder.
Catonzo all higher vampires can control lessers. I believe other highers can't influenced already influenced vamps
@WitcherGeorge According to Regis, and I quote him from the game (so I do not know if the books actually deepend this), "Each Vampire has a unique talent. One they hone over centuries. It's precisely what renders us so difficult to classify. Dettlaff's trump card is his herd instinct, his tribal propensity". Talent, as it's not just a personality trait, but a skill. He controls lesser vampires at a much greater degree is what I take from this - not his ability to transform. For all we know, the bat form that Regis can take too is just polymorphism and that he can also take the same form as Dettlaff did because he IS extremly powerful.
@Abdillah Azhar I think the Unseen Elder(s) is/are just that damn powerful, not a special ability. If Dettlaff had lived long enough to become one, he might have been able to do the same, though even more potent. But it's merely speculation.
If you look at the gwent cards there is a drawing of Regis transformed, in the official art book for gwent both, Regis as a human and transformed, are side by side.
For as cool a boss fight as that was, I can't help but feel bad when he dies. He was played from the beginning and suffered for it. Really this game was so well made it made you care about nearly everyone.
I felt worse for Regis than I did for Detlaff. Though I still sympathize with Detlaff a lot, I’d probably make similar decisions in his shoes.
Good timing! I just re-completed blood and wine today.
I don't get why they couldn't do the Syanna Ribbon route but then after the fight instead of killing Dettlaff they couldn't have either
A: Chopped him up into little pieces and then buried him so that in 50+ years he could have regenerated like Regis did while having a good long think about what happened.
or B: Lock him up in Tesham Mutna before he recovered and force him to listen to reason. Maybe even sneak Syanna out again to talk without him just jumping ahead to stabbing her.
And least these ways Dettlaff didn't have to die.
Sir George, I love your videos, listen all the time, and you're always spot on, expect one small detail about Dettlaff. His special ability is the power to exert his will onto other creatures, namely he uses this ability to sick the flood of lesser vampires on Toussiant
7:17 I love your reasoning on Dettlaff's choice to hang with with lesser vampires XDDDDD
I wonder what his relationship was with that bruxa
Roland Deschain true but I think she might be like his concubine? Why else would he trust her so much
She might not be a bruxae but maybe a higher vampire
@@bjornlothbrok3604 geralt kills her so that right there says she wasn't a higher vampire
@@Coven_of_Hags late reply but i seriously doubt detlaff would cheat on syanna.
Perhaps a lackey of his that he sent to retrieve his hand
Nice Vid, like always, George!
Hy-drenalin thanks man
I think you didn't mention this but in the story of how they met syanna mentions Detlaff wanted to sell a silver candlestick. Geralt and Regis have a conversation earlier in the game about how easy it would be for a higher vampire to become a burglar, I think this is referencing that and telling us Detlaff might have been a burglar once.
Or he just doesn't like silver candlesticks. :D
Regis is Good, Detlaff is Neutral, Syanna is Evil.
I find Detlaff very interesting. And his final vampire form is just amazing and gives you that thought of 'Oh crap this is definitely a vampire' CDPR is really amazing.
The first time I faced him I was like " You've done fucked up"
Imagine the unseen elders final form 💀
There should be an ending where Dettlaff lives, and both Syanna and Anna die. Anna killed by Syanna and Syanna by Dettlaff.
This.
Good video :)
I wish there was a way to keep Dettlaf & Syanna from dying. Syanna should be punished but it's not a happy ending if she dies. It's sad that Dettlaf has to die for the good ending.
I figured out all the details except the other endings in which Syanna could be killed. I just want to know why Dettlaff alone can summon an army of vampires. During my play through I was very patient, followed what Regis has to say, and brought Syanna there. It's Dettlaff's decision so I don't feel sorry for him, or the people, blame the royal sisters instead.
In my ending syanna died. Detlaff lives . Anna lives . I couldn't kill detlaaf ,liked that character so much .
The best part about this game is the grey aspect of morality. There is no "right choice". There will always be people that suffer, no matter how hard you try to save everyone.
That is some good storywriting. Thank you CDPR for creating this masterpiece!
Nice Video!2
"Good ending..." Hmm a matter of perspective. I think Syanna and Anna Henrietta are twisted brats, who rule or want to rule and were mentally abused by their environment. Due to his childhood, Syanna abused Dettlaff and made him a killer/executioner. The real murder is committed by Syanna. Anna Henrietta put Syannas life beyond all, even the lives of their citizen. Therefore I think letting Syanna die, Henrietta grief over Syanna and let Dettlaff take his revenge is in my eyes the ending which is really good. Regis fate makes this clear in my eyes. The called good ending is really bitter because Syanna is forgiven and held hostage in a golden cage. Having Regis Anathema and force him to kill Dettlaff and let Dettlaff die feels so wrong.
Deadlafft unique abilities if I recall is his ability to control lesser vampires. In game Gerald asks Regis how can so many vampires be at one place and Regis replies with "Deadlafft has exceptional abilities." Something of that sort.
I don't if youhave a video about regis. But I just reached the point in the books were we meet Regis. And it's really cool to see him talk about vampires and the plant he uses for his drink. After playing the games and then reading the books you find out so much more about the story.
Yup! I'll have to cover him at some point
Drink every time he “flies into a rage” 💀
I am in love with Detlaff and he always lives in my playthroughs ❤
Oi mate, wish I had cash to donate and whatnot. Love the content you put out! Was never really into The Witcher overall, but after clicking one of your vids on a whim, I was hooked. Hope you're doing well, just a fan saying thanks and keep up the good work!
Cheers!
If I ever meet you in person, first rounds on me.
Thanks man!
I wonder what would have happened if Synna just asked Detlaff to kill the 5 people instead of pretending to be kidnapped.
Very much enjoy your Witcher lore videos.
Thank you man
hey! i found your comment on the pewdiepie vid today! lol i just came here to check out your vids and i love them! keep up the great work because your amazing
Savannah Alexander thank you man, I just wanted to share my experiences and maybe get a little advice!
The sheer amount of people who consider a dude getting away with a casual genocide he committed over his spite with one single person a "good ending" is pretty unsettling.
Dettlaff's feelings were hurt and he decided the best course of actions was to send vampires to slaughter hundreds of innocents bystanders, snack on orphans etc., and somehow he should not face repercussions because he's le cool fluffy wuffy incel vampire. Jesus Christ.
I can see motivations for either condemning or sparing the ducal duo depending on whether you want to be lenient or draconian or whatever you feel like, but I see no reason to let Incelaff get away with a petty genocide.
Good god dettlauf kicked my ass like, 70 times.
His bat attack would just one hit me every time
Dettlaff the bad ass
Good video, I wish u did more than one per day
Graf Galland thanks man!
I would've spared detlaff, those knight's deserved it anyway, he was manipulated and all that but how would you explain his actions. He caused countless deaths of citizens of Beauclair by calling all those vampires.
As Regis said "rage had consumed him".
Ayan Das The way it’s written, it’s almost impossible not to sympathize with Detlaff and understand his choices. If I was an immortal, extremely powerful, by nature overly emotional creature, I would probably make very similar decisions.
Yet he's still one of the most sane vampires
Detlaff might not be Evil per say... but he's a danger, not only to human kind but to everyone.
Vampires might be all powerfull and can kill humans like they were flies, but Humans but due to Detlaff, hundreds of innocent died and he brings the Vampires in jeopardy, although humans might be weak... but they still cause destructions. Like geralt said to the higher vampire " Humans might even destroy the cave to your homeland"
Yes but the children who were killed by Dettlaffs army of vampires didn't deserve it, did they?
@@godofwarkratos8513 Coz Synna is a bitch and yes all she care about is getting her revenge shit
I find it easier to empathize with the higher vampires of the game than most of its humans. Sure, Dettlaf's done some pretty awful things to humans, but... He's not human. He's a superior species.
I mean imagine being stranded in a world full of dogs: the can't talk, live short lives compared to you and are vastly beneath you in terms of intelligence, strength, etc. But one day you rescue a beat-up stray and form a bond with it, then you later learn that it was taken by a pack of savage, wild dogs. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't find it immoral to slay the 'beasts' that took your companion. Sure, dogs can't deceive or blackmail, but you get the allegory.
Most people find it hard to empathize with the vampires, well, because we're conditioned to empathize with those we pity (the poor, the hungry, the outcast). Some people find it hard to empathize with rich people as well, just because they can't relate to them as easily.
I hate myself for contracting crippling Gwent addiction...
During dialogue with Regis, Regis states that Dettlaff's unique ability is his ability to summon lesser vampires to work with him, whether this is thru control/manipulation or his ability is to be more like a coven leader for example I don't recall as I don't recall the exact wording of Regis' dialogue, but yeah, that's his unique ability.
I thought all higher vampires possessed that ability?
WitcherGeorge
czcams.com/video/orQP0Y2NK4o/video.html
Time 124:18.
Confirmation of unique ability. Took me a while to find as despite knowing I'd heard Regis state it, there's that much dialogue between him and Geralt.
Additional info Witcher George, as you may or may not be aware, it would seem all Higher Vampires have a unique special ability. Detlaff as mentioned, heard propensity and Regis is his immunity to fire which most vampires are weak to. Obviously if we're talking burning white hot mage spell fire (courtesy of Vilgefortz), then no he's not immune to that but natural fire he is.
Everyone arguing over which is the best ending - let me remind you all of this one fact: Syanna's last victim to have murdered was her very own *sister*, the duchess and ruler of Toussaint. That is treason and the most despicable thing a person can do - murder a kinsman. HOW is what Detlaff did worse than this? IF it's just a numbers game to you - you need to think a bit harder.
I tried to go back and save him several times, but sadly my main game save was already after Syanna got her ribbon (and after I already did the Unseen Elder ending.) I wish there was still an option to save him. My next playthrough, dude...
You know I always wondered in the battle when you get him to like half hp does he use magic to create like this sphere of his interior? It seems you have to destroy his heart arteries at that point but how did he get you into that "sphere thing"? Did he make that with some kind of materialistic ability or could it be an illusion or something of the sort
And great vid george love it
Duncan Wehrhahn thanks man and I'll have to look into it!
He bites Geralt and it causes some kind of hallucination. I think it’s mainly just meant to be a cool final phase of the boss fight, not really meant to make complete sense.
If there's one ending where both sisters die but Dettluf survives I would take that as a good ending!
A video about Geralts special extra mutations would be cool
Ethan Faiello good idea man! I covered it lightly in my witcher trials video
Hey next I would like to see you talk about borsodi's family history they seem really interesting like brother against brother
Nice suggestion man!
You make very good videos, you must have studied the game well!
Good cover
Dettlaff I feel was such a gentle soul or rather such a vulnerable soul that suck deception truely hurt him. Look at his other actions. Some random kid gives him an apple. And when he hears the child is slain. He butchered the beast who did it. He’s a toy maker. He spends days building objects that children delight in. He apologizes to Geralt for their first fight. Personally this is a man with a strong sense of honor. Who happens to have a darker predatory nature unfortunately.
Dettlaffs outfit was fucking dope
When he sat down next to an empty chair at the bootblack's, I couldn't help but to feel so bad for him. It's so unfair.
@WitcherGeorge just saw trailer of gwent for its expansion. crimson curse. and they say it is new lore. and detlaf was alive. any insights?
Can you imagine how easy the battle of Kaer Morhen would have been if Geralt had Regis and Detlaff aiding him! Fucking hell the Wild hunt would have been carved open like tin cans
Detlaff vs Vilgefortz would be badass since they both defeated Regis with relative ease and Detlaff basically just threw him around like a rag and it took both Regis and Geralt, and this was a far more powerful version of Geralt than the book version of him.
Well, to be fair, Regis was said to be weakened as he hadn't fully recovered yet.
But yes Dettlaf is probably stronger than Regis either way. Geralt on the other hand basically defeated Dettlaf on his own, which is a crazy feat.
Vilgefortz is still stronger than all 3 imo.
Regis was recovering still, and didn't really want to fight, that's why Dettlaff could easily throw him around, but with vampires, strength comes with age, and Regis is older than Dettlaff, so he should be stronger
@@howielowis458 Vilgefortz was killed by Geralt tho
Regis does have a "True Form" at least in Gwent. It does not look the same, 'Werebat' is the best description.
You can see their nature's to a degree within their Feral Form.
Look at the teeth and the Ears
Regis grows long pointy ears, and his canines and incisors become long and pointed. His nose moves up.. like a bat.
Dettlaff has a much more traditional Vampire set of teeth and his ears do not elongate but fold back slightly. He takes on a far more predatory appearance, akin to a big cat or wolves snout.
Perhaps all HV have a True Form, but like much about them, each is unique and their own.
I say this because we know Regis and Dettlaff are from the same clan. So despite that relation (how significant that may or may not be.) They are still very far from one another.
Then we have A and her Bhruxa.
I went to the elder then reloaded doing the fables quest, because as Geralt says.. If such a huge outcry expands, every single higher vampire would be in risk of exposure, and yes, they won't die.. True... But they would be in a huge inconvenience for a long time.. Dettlaff is a great guy, but also a loose Canon.. Maybe not today, but tomorrow he'll be a tool to someone else again or maybe not, but we can't count on him being rational enough...
there is some indication that Regis has a similar ''higher vampire monster form'' as there are two Gwent cards of him. One shows him in his human form and the other one depicts him as a very large bat like monster. So I do believe higher vampires all have a more monstrous form, but in the case of Regis, he prefers to remain in his more civil form.
5 years late because I only just discovered your channel but here's my ideal ending for the DLC: Syanna dies, Dettlaff gets obliterated (not killed, so Regis can take him to the other side of the planet and nurse him back to health. That way Regis isn't shunned by the other vampires). I think they both could deserve to die (but Regis doesn't deserve to get shunned), but for Dettlaff I see him as more redeemable and therefore think another chance far, FAR away could be good. I see him as more redeemable because he shows genuine kindness to people, while Syanna manipulates the kindness of people and was even willing to kill her own sister. It's been a while since I played so I could be remembering wrong (and also didn't finish the video before making this comment so if this was brought up during I'm not aware) but she wanted to kill her sister for something that wasn't her fault on top of everything else. The blood of those who died is just as much on her hands as it is on his, and in my opinion her actions were more monstrous than his because she manipulated his kindness and his love for her, with no remorse. Except for the attacking the whole city thing, that was definitely more monstrous on his part. Honestly, in my opinion, Syanna 100% deserves to die. With Dettlaff, it's less clear. On one hand, he deserves to die too, but on the other, it isn't entirely his fault what happened. She manipulated him, he believed it because he trusted her. He didn't abuse her trust and kindness, he didn't hide true intentions from her, he didn't use her. She did that to him, which makes her worse than only a murderer in my eyes. They are both wrong, but to me she's worse. Everyone sucks kind of situation, hate the endings. Especially the "good" ending
Detlaff is the actual representation of never kill a fly with a tank.
I Liked his character alot I tryed all I could to save him and not have to kill him cause I seen my self in him alot I'm very emotional at times but in the end all I could do was give him a good fight
I tried my best not to fight him but like you, in the end the only thing I could give him was a warrior's death.
Actually I am more inclined to like and care for someone who is considered "monster" like Dettlaff than 98% of the human beings who are considered "normal". Just saying. Another wild thought from me - noone is able to love like a vampire can. It's his blessing and his curse. It's kind of sad.
For his character I get a very Troy kinda feeling in the story people keep thinking that detlaff is just a high vampire but even then it’s like he’s a king wars have been started over much less and so I feel like letting him live is justified.
If there's ever another 2 itches game it be cool if they had combos like the one there with Gerald and regis
dettlaff's unique ability is having control over other vampires, being able to command them etc (propably animals as well)
Definitely a character worth investing on. I feel like he had a case of a bad breakup, kind of like what we have in this world, and for getting his petty revenge on a bitch, he decided to destroy an entire city and it's people, just to get back at her. Or in our case; sharing some vids and pics of her when you were dating, LOL. Even though he is cool and powerful, I didn't like him one bit. Glad he died. The only thing this DLC got bad, in opinion, is Dettlaff. A great video BTW.
*hate comment acting as criticism*
I let him live,he was used by woman who wanted revenge on sister, best ending would be to both of sisters dies ,while he and regis survive.
I tip my hat to you Witcher George 👍
I killed Syanna and let Detlaff go. To me that's the best ending. The queen will get over it. Syanna knew the risks about using a vampire in love to kill his only human friend. She got her revenge and he got his.
Preach.
@@Sapphiresenthiss I really liked Dettlaff, and wanted him to live. I felt bad for him. But attacking a city, killing hundreds of innocent people, children even, wasn't the answer. Only there I decided I had to kill him. I usually go with the Unseen Elder ending. But I do like the ending where Dettlaff lives because then Regis is free.
@@andreasvd9137 'children even' Never understood the fetish of thinking children lives matter more than the lives of adults, but nevermind.
Anyways, yes, I believe it was a quite unnecessary turn of events and slightly out of Dettlaff's character, but well, nothing we could do about that. Dettlaff's not human as well so I choose to judge him by different standards.
I still decided to save him, even just for the sake of Regis, even if to some of us Dettlaff deserves death, Regis definitely does NOT deserve suffering for the rest of his immortal life more than he suffers already.
@@Sapphiresenthiss I feel bad for Regis, but he says there is also the saying "out of sight, out of mind."
And children are just starting their life. And that got taken away from those vampires.
@@andreasvd9137 Doesn't change the fact he won't ever be able to communicate/come anywhere near any vampire. Even not considering Dettlaff, this is way too awful to me.

Dude he only need one person which is Syanna why involve the city lol. It's simple, evil consumes him and didn't think the best decision possible.I know they made a deal 3 days but already 1 week past then he and his vampire dudes slaughter the city.Doing the alternatives like asking for help instead of hiding or whatever he's doing and still he didn't,He want it his way and that ended him.
