  • Today I talk about the higher vampire Orianna. Or is Orianna a higher vampire, as many actually believe Orianna to be a bruxa. She Was first introduced in the blood and wine DLC and in that Dlc part of her story are explored, I will attempt to tell you the parts you probably over-looked or, if not may this video act a refresher on Orianna's story in blood and wine.. In today's video I'll cover Orianna's potential origins, her history and her death and Orianna's personality.

A quick disclaimer - A lot of these videos use information from the witcher wiki, in some cases I do read directly from the pages, I do always make sure to include my own thoughts and other information I know myself, but I just want to make sure everyone is on the same page here. Even though I use information from the wiki, I do still create the videos, with time, effort and a lot of editing! The idea behind the lore videos is to present to information to you guys in a fun and more interesting way then you guys having to get the information from pages and read it yourself. If anyone isn't okay with this I apologise, but since day one I have always said where I get the information from. Thank you for reading.

The whole quest at her party and specifically the scene with Geralt, Regis, Ana Henrieta, Detlaff, and Orianna all sitting and talking is one of my favorite parts of the game. The fact that there's three vampires there, including the beast of beauclair himself, and Ana Henrietta is completely in the dark, is just a really cool dynamic.

477sierra They both explicitly mention a contract being out on the bruxa's head as well. I highly doubt Orianna would leave her cushy, aristocratic position in Toussiant, just to become a monster terrifying locals in Novigrad, resulting in a bounty on her head. Geralt and the bruxa do not appear to recognize one another at all in the trailer either.
Sorry man, as much as fans want to create their own fanfic linking Orianna and this bruxa, the limit of their relationship is that CDPR decided to use the bruxa's character template for Orianna in Blood and Wine.

Even before Blood and Wine Geralt fights Hubert Rejk, a higher vampire who transform into a Katakan, so Orianna can transform into a bruxa, we don't see Regis transformation in the game but in the books he could transform into something like a Fleder and Dettlaff has a unique transformation. I actually never had any issues with the Vampire controversy.
I see it like this: There is the species (or what ever you wanna call it) called "Higher Vampire" and then, there is a "higher" vampire then the "non-sapient", or sometimes just less smart vampires. So a Bruxa is a "higher" vampire, compared to a Fleder. Also Katakan is a higher vampire compared to a Fleder. //Also when Geralt says that a Katakan is a higher vampire, he means it is a "stronger" vampire (maybe he is also boasting about the fact he just killed a stronger vampire, so he'd get payed adequately).
But Regis belongs to the species of "Higher Vampires".
So Orianna might really be a Bruxa. Dettlaff's Bruxa friend in the beginning of Blood and Wine was clearly sapient. But she still is a "lesser" vampire than a "Higher Vampire".
Hope someone still reads this, as this comment comes quite late :-)

Geralt can't actually kill her because she is a higher vampire. If it wasn't for that, she would have to follow Detlaff as Bruxa in "Blood and Wine" when he orders the attack on Beauclair. Only higher vampires do not have to follow these calls and as a higher vampire she can only be killed by another high vampire. CDPR is probably contradicting itself because they no longer know where they were singing and when. But since I rate the game higher than the trailer, Orianna is a higher vampire and the trailer just has a flaw.

Regis does say too that Detlaff helped him regenerate at great cost to himself (or some similar wording, can't remember exactly) so it may be unlikely that anybody is likely to help Oriana regenerate, unlike in the case of Regis, where Detlaff specifically values vampires in the way some animals value members of their pack and so felt compelled to help.

  • @DonPatrono
    @DonPatrono Před 6 lety +111

CDProject Red's dev that was asked if Orianna was a higher vampire because, in older games, bruxae were considered as such, later corrected the statement and confirmed that she was, indeed, a bruxa and not a true higher vampire. This does not mean her behavior is unrealistic: bruxae in the Witcher lore have the ability to become basically indistinguishable from a human, and especially for a very old bruxa like her that lived amongst human for quite some time, mimicking a human is easy job. Basically, vampires are differenciated between true higher vampires that are the likes of Regis or Detlaff or the Unseen Eldar, which are truly immortals with incredible power, and lower vampires which are mortal. Amongst these, you have the more beastly vampires (ekimmaras, garkhains, fleders, plumards) and more intelligent ones. Amongst the more intelligent, you have the ones that can more or less mimick a human for feeding (alps, mulas, neukrats/nosferats) and those that, if old enough, can basically become undistinguishable from one (bruxae, katakans, rarely neukrats). It all boils down to one thing: a true higher vampire cannot be killed, unless another vampire sucks his life essence (blood) and thus drains him
In addition, when they are young, higher vampires might act like "punks" as Regis recounts to Geralt, while a younger lower vampire of the higher intelligence (bruxae, katakans etc.) will act only on their beastly instincts, not even being able to transform into human.

Introduced to Geralt by Milton de Peyrac-Peyran and his acquaintances as the innkeepers daughter. She had quite the conversation with Geralt as well. Bruxae are sentient to a point as human mind can tell no difference or at least the ones in Beauclair do. Also some undiscovered locations offered a trade of blows with couple of Alps and Bruxae. Where we saw some love letters and such stuff on the bodies of victims. Which also supports the idea that Bruxae can live among humans and play the role of an individual in the community. Hence it is possible that Orianna is possibly a Bruxa.

Not only high higher vampires can be a part of society. Lesser higher vampires(if that makes sense) like katakans can be smart and actually make a part of society. Think about the coroner from Priscilla's quest, that one fights like a katakan in my opinion.

Well In the game we have seen Katakans also being integrated into society. For example the coroner in Novigrad. He calls himself a higher vampire by he is obviously a Katakan and was killed by Geralt normally. So it can be said that higher vampires (such as Regis) are not the only ones of the species that integrate into human communities. So Orianna can be both a bruxa and a citizen in Beauclair.
Anyway in my head cannon the night to remember is happening after B&W as a fulfillment of Geralt's promise to come after her. No matter the inconsistencies.

So far I've only watched the first 5 minutes, but I just gotta say one thing. There are *two* types of higher vampires: higher vampires like Regis and Dettlaf, and higher vampires for example like Orianna and that coroner in Novigrad (Hubert I think was his name). You can't kill the real higher vampires like Regis, but you can kill vampires like Orianna because they are a different type. Even CDPR said that, and they quoted the books, but I can't seem to find the source atm. I'll link it if I find it later.

she was healthy in the trailer which means that she couldve just regenerated her lost arm, there is only two
explanations for that, which are, 1- there is two kinds of higher vampires, ones are killable and the others not(stronger) or 2- the poison geralt drank was a some sort of anti-regeneration poison which is a bit shaky because im almost sure that higher vampires do not get affected by poison, i would say that the first one makes more sense for the game(because this will not fly in the books).

    • @exharkhun5605

I personally believe there's a difference between common folk's definition of higher vampire and expert's definition. Common folk simply refer to any shape shifting vampire as higher vampire, you see the same thing in the "concerned citizen" quest. The serial killer refers to himself as higher vampire yet he just turns into a katakan and geralt successfully slays him. I hope that explains it

  • @edi9892
    @edi9892 Před 6 lety +4

IMHO she's a Bruxa and thus a higher vampire, but Detlaff, and the two other elder vampires we meet are an entirely different league. Orianna is not the only Bruxa that can speak with humans (the one at Corvo Blanco), nor the only one that manages to hide among humans (the one in Oxenfurth and the one at Novigrad). However, all of them can be killed, except for the elder ones.
Then there are some ugly vampires that can't talk and can't blend in at all. So, I would say that there are according to the games lore at least three classes of Vampires.

I don't find the trailer and dlc difficult to reconcile.
As many have pointed out, it helps to distinguish between two groups or levels of higher vampires. Let's say katakans, bruxae and all those regular vampires that can take human form are common higher vampires, while Regis and Detlaff belong to the "true" higher vampires, that most people aren't even aware exist.
The game tells us that Bruxae usually aren't overly intelligent or civilized - BUT it shows us time and time again, that individual monsters can be special, like a singing and drawing troll, a bigger, stronger nekker wearing leather boots, a water hag using drowners to guard her pantry, a leshen conducting warrior trials - and in Toussaint we can spot what looks like a bruxa mourning a man she apparently killed.
Once we imagine Orianna to be an exceptional bruxa, probably older, stronger and smarter than usual, who took a liking to the comfortable life of true higher vampires in Toussaint, everything makes sense. She maintains the orphanage because unlike e.g. Regis she still _depends_ on blood, and child prisoners are the easiest to manage. It might be this realization that gives Geralt the confidence to threaten her. His threat and the fact we never see her transformed are in-game clues she might at best be posing as a true higher vampire.
As the actual true higher vampires even entertain relations with humans, one can imagine they wouldn't object to Orianna joining their gang.

    • @WitcherGeorge
      @WitcherGeorge  Před 6 lety +3

Yes that's the cdprojektred version, the confusion is that using book lore, this doesn't make much sense, regis pretty much confirms her as a higher vampire in game.

For everyone that are confuse about Orianna being an alp or a bruxa, if you played the game and fought a bruxa and a alp , + noticing the details about the trailer a night to remember, it does show the clear difference but with CDPR messed up. Both bruxa and alp are fast asf, both jump in the air to appear behind enemies. BUT. in a night to remember orianna can turn invisible like a bruxa in the game. BUT in the game, a bruxa is brown black hair and can only jump sprinting arround to move . An alp in game is red hair But to move arround , they are the only one with the 1:03 blink spam . You see how she dissapered by air blinking blue wavy lines ? only the alp in game got . I spawned an alp and bruxa for 10 minutes with a mod making them fight. Bruxa posess invisibility and bruxa posess air blink but Orianna in the trailer possess invisibility and air blink+ Red hair. But in game everything is scattered btw both . (if you follow the trailer it doesnt make sens and cant give her the 100% title of bruxa or alp. But if you think about it and remember seeing an alp in game wearing a coat long robe its the same as the trailer like. Plus they dissapear from the robe leaving it on the flor. Only alp are like that in the wild. And bruxa are just naked spaming invisibility in the wild. So all those facts make orianna an alp if looking at the trailer and not a bruxa.

In the books there is a story about a man who was cursed to be a monster, he was in love with a mermaid, at least that was what he thought. She actually was a bruxa, she could talk and also was quiet intelligent, as she bewitched hin and used him as a bodyguard.
In the end Gerald and the Monster killed her and because the poor guy's love for her was true, the sacrifice broke the curse.
Quiet a story but the importand part is that Gerald talked to the bruxa first, as he had to decide if she needed to be stoped and killed.

I think a distinction between Higher Vampires (Orianna, Hubert Rejk, Novigrad Vampire) and True Higher Vampires (Regis, Detlaff, Unseen Elder) can be made quite clearly. First of all the Human knowledge of monsters in the Witcher universe is imperfect. Let alone the Bestiary category "Relicts" points to the fact that Humans (or in this case Dandelion as he is the narrator) do not know everything there is to know about all different kinds of monsters. The category Vampire is basically a shared penchant for drinking blood - even though some of the entries are also fond of flesh itself (Fleder) - and have some resemblances with bats. While there are brute Vampires like Garkains or Fleders there is also a grey area for some of the other bloodsuckers. While some Katakans have shown to be able of speech (Gael in Oxenfurt) and somer older exemplars were even able to walk among humans (Hubert, Novigrad Vamp) there have been several encounters with Katakans who were smarter than your average beast but did not display signs of "civilized behaviour" and have been found living in sewers, caves and abandoned ruins. To me it seems like there are certain vampiric races that can be clearly categorized as "Lower Vampires" - Fleders and Garkains among them. Then there are some vampiric races that are, in some cases, able to show high intelligence and to walk freely and undetected among humans - these would be some Katakans, Bruxas (e.g. the Bruxa of Corvo Bianco, the "Hooded Woman" in Beauclair and Orianna) and probably some others that have not been present in the game - the so-called "Higher Vampires". Here is the point were the imperfect human knowledge of monsters in the Witcher universe starts to play a role: Besides those so-called "Higher Vampires" there is also a distinct race of "True Higher Vampires" (Regis, Detlaaf, UE) these immensly powerful beings command influence over other Vampires and even consort with the civilized among the "Higher Vampires" like Orianna or the Bruxa of Corvo Bianco. These "True Higher Vampires" are a species of their own distinct not only by their immense power but their immortality, beings that, without exaggeration, can be described as quasi-demigods in this world.
Humans simply have not caught up to clearly mark them out from other intelligent, speaking, civilized Vampires - especially since they rarely survive an encounter with any kind of intelligent vampire. For one because they are incredibly rare (mentioned by Regis) and they clearly are very secretive as a society. They prefer to remain in the shadows - while their power clearly gives them an edge over people who want to snoop about (ingame you can't go back into Vampire ruins/dungeons and can't even identify the doors without help) or even preventing them from realizing that there is something to snoop about in the first place. With little being known of their ancient civilization, they simply got thrown in with other "Higher Vampires", because witnesses (if there are any) will simply report of a human shapeshifting into a giant bat. Another hint of their special place in this world is Geralt's interaction with the Unseen Elder - he simply is completely at his mercy without any chance to mount a meaningful defense. If beings such as this want to remain hidden, they most certainly will succeed.
    To summarize:
While Arianna is a Bruxa that has reached the status of "Higher Vampire" she can still be killed by ordinary Witcher means since she is not a "True Higher Vampire". I do not think CDPR did bungle the lore here, they simply did not provide the player with more information than human society (or Witchers) has in the game world. Even scholars in the world of the Witcher have not yet fully realized that besides lower and higher Vampires there is another category of Vampires alltogether, one that is much more capable, with the "True Higher Vampires".

I'm pretty sure the night to remember trailer was put out before Blood and Wine had taken it's final shape.
It's most likely IMO just a coincidence that they decided to use a very fleshed out character model and the voice actor for the trailer before Orianna's character and role were fully fleshed out.

I'm of the same mind, but we can still try and find a lore reason around it

Seeing videos here on CZcams I got spoiled that Orianna was the bruxa in the trailer. But when I saw her today playing Blood and Wine(finished the game too, will replay I think to spare Dettlaff poor guy) seeing her made me almost jump out of my seat, I mean the trailer itself was bad ass and seeing her in my playthrough released the inner fan boy hahaha
    Edit:
This video sat in my Watch Later playlist for a while, planning to check it out once I beat the game which I did several hours ago. Great content, I almost got goosebumps when Orianna sang the song to the kid when she asked me to kill the archgarkain. And fanboyed again when Geralt said he would come back for her someday, great callback to the trailer!

If you look at the main story of Witcher 3, there were 2 "Higher Vampires" you could encounter, the Doctor, that investigated the deaths of the victims who were caused by the serial killer who was actually himself, and one you could find in a cave under Novigrad (?). Both changed into Ekkimmaras when you encountered them/started a fight. So that explains why Orianna is a Bruxa/Higher Vampire at the same time cause apparently, other higher vampires can transform into the shape of lower vampires. The second thing is about Orianna's "death" in the A Night to Remember trailer. So here's the thing: Higher Vampires can "die" in a weird way. You can't "kill" them, since other Higher Vampires can revive them as Dettlaff did with Regis. So, you can make them, let's say, unable to live their lives until an other Higher Vampire gives them their blood or whatever they do to revive their brothers/sisters. This is proven by Regis death in the Witcher Books.
Hope that explains a little bit.

I see, but I believe that Regis was reviving, but incredibly slowly (death would've been better) , Dettlaff simply sped up the process incredibly!

I mean, he was still regenerating really slow even with Dettlaffs help. What's the timeline between the books and the games? Like 10 years I believe, and he was still weak when you encountered him in Toussaint, so it would have probably taken him centuries to regenerate on his own.

We can also go with a simpler answer. We know that Higher vampires get stronger with age. Its possible that all higher vampires can be killed by any species but they get harder to kill with age. Eventually, when they are old and strong enough, it becomes only practical for their own kind to inflict mortal wounds because wounds inflicted by them don't heal as fast or completely. Orianna could just be a LOT younger.

I'm late haha. This an old issue about the Blood and WIne and A night to remember. But one thing keeps me bugging. How many years did actually passed after Geralt decided to get back and slay Orianna?
'nice tune, been a while since I heard it last'
    'folk have forgotten it'

Witchers have a greater life span due to the mutations, so i would say, literally it's been a while..

Look closely at the corpse, it was burnt by the sun. I remember that there was a line on the DLC that a soldier said vampires can be died by the sun and Geralt replied that it was only a myth. What I want to say CD Red did some modifications which explains the higher vampire bruxea issue

Yeah when Geralt found Orianna feeding on the last orphan boy he vowed to come back for her, she's a Bruxa, I saw this trailer 1st so I was like whoa he meant her, excellent trailer

I always figured she was always like the Carnal Sins serial killer where she's not an actual higher vampire but she's just really old so she's stronger and "more civilised" than other lower vampires

The best and most reasonable explanation is to take them both as Orianna but playing different characters, the one from the trailer (a Bruxa) is just for marketing purposes, the one in the game (a Higher Vampire) is canon. I don't know if CDPR did it deliberately or not but it wasn't a good idea.

I may be misremembering the story (it has been several years since I last played TW1), but didn't Geralt have the option of clearing out a brothel that was being run by vampires?
