    TRANSCRIPT
While unloading your washer you notice your feet are getting wet-not a good sign. What to do? A leak from the bottom of a washing machine means a problem with internal parts, a fix best left for a qualified professional. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to minimize the damage and expedite the fix. Hi, I'm Paul Blake for Repair.com with some tips to help you deal with a leaking washing machine.
Step 1: Soak up the water
First things first: Clean up any water. Just grab some towels and go.
If the leak is substantial and has found its way to your carpet, it's especially important to act fast. A wet carpet can lead to mold.
Throw dry towels on the carpet and stomp on them to soak up as much water as you can. If you have a wet/dry vac, use it to suck up what's left. Finally, direct a fan toward the wet area.
If the carpet doesn't dry completely, pull it back, cut away the wet backing and replace it. Consider renting a professional drying fan.
Step 2: Determine what's causing the leak
The more information you can give your repairman, the more able he'll be to give you an accurate repair estimate and come prepared with the parts needed to get your washer working again.
An important clue is when the leak occurs:
    • A top-load washer that leaks only when the machine agitates may have a faulty center post gasket.
    • Leaks that occur after the fill cycle starts could mean a rusted tub seal or a hole in the tub caused by rusting or wear from constant imbalance.
o If the problem is rust around the tub seal, a new, oversized seal may fix it. But if rusting is severe, you may have to buy a new washer.
o Rusted tubs may be covered under warranty; however, ones with holes are not. Tubs are replaceable, but expensive-so it may be more cost-effective to buy that new washer you've had your eye on.
Another important clue is where your leak is coming from. Unless your leak is more like a flood, try this trick:
Tuck a dry newspaper under your washer and run a load. The newspaper will map out where the leak occurs.
    • Leaks in the rear may indicate a leaky pump.
    • Leaks from the middle may mean a faulty air dome seal.
Step 3: Prepare your washer to be repaired
It's likely your service professional will have to disassemble your machine to fix it. You can save time and money by emptying your washer of clothes and water, and clearing access to it as much as possible.
Good luck! We hope your washer is spinning like new soon.

ingenious, I never tried using towels to soak up the water, I usually use a small straw to kinda sift the water into small paper cups and make a thousand trips to the farthest sink in my house, huge time saver!

Here's a tip after spending $1400.00 on an LG front loading washer I am going to disposable freaking washers. Scarew this! I just bought a 330.00 Magic Chef DISPOSABLE washer. I hated front loaders since the day I HAD to purchase one for the house I bought. They had apartment size washer and dryer in the kitchen and good grief if I bought one of those cheap apartment size washers. I will not pay a repair man to bitch and gripe that my washer and dryer are stacked and they are too heavy to take apart. Then deal with the PCB board going for 300.00 bucks (roughly, probably more like 400.00 now) plus the cost to roll a truck probably 85.00 now. Then the leak which is probably due to a clog or a rusted drum, mind you this is 5-1/2 yr old washer that was impossible to keep level. Then, have them tell me the cost is more than half to repair. Really, I was told by a repairman that appliances only last 5 years. So, dig deep for that extended warranty on a front loading washing machine if you want it to last more than 5 years.
If your carpet is soaked called your insurance company and have them repair it. Chances are you are too afraid to put a claim in against your insurance because you're afraid they will drop you. And they will. Sure, you gotta love the foreign manufacturing going on today. Our washers and dryers used to last 20 to 30 years when they were made in the USA. Hope your new Carrier air conditioning systems last longer than five years, now. Useless everything is useless today. Thanks for teaching me how to lay down towels and calling a repairman. Do you work for Sears?

and to people who insist on repairing it yourself, go ahead, see how that fairs you

I have a feeling it may be the Center Post gasket. I have video of it leaking on both sides. If anyone has any ideas of a quick fix (stop leak or anything that may be able to seal up the seal(s) that maybe leaking) I'd appreciate it. Thank you again.

    • @doloresm7396

We're pretty much in the exact same boat and it's sinking fast. Mine is a stacked front loader but mine leaks after the cycle. I also have a PCB board problem too. Mine is a slow leak so it leaks for days. There is a product called liquid steel if it is in fact steel but sounds like the gasket would be rubber. If you have a front loader you still have the issue of taking it apart and that is not a one man job. So, you are still in trouble you will need your buddies or if you are a woman you will need a couple guys. Hopefully it is a small apartment size washer dryer set up. I am buying disposable appliances from now on. We use appliances that are too large anyway. Look at the size of the appliances they use in the UK. They have to be half the price of the crap they sell us here. Time to go small unless you have a family of twenty people. This is bs. Good luck you're gonna need it. Appliance people just love stacked appliances. (Joke).

I have an old, inherited GE washer (and dryer.) When I found a flood after running a cycle, I assumed it was because of the clogged drain hose filter. So, like an Idiot(!) I simply changed it and ran another cycle today. Yup...flooded again. ##$%! So...I transferred the clothes to the dryer, and ran a short, empty, "test" cycle. Niagara falls out the bottom front, the instant I turned it on. Will mop it up in a few hours (unfinished basement) and plan out my next move.
