- This episode of Disaster Breakdown looks at the mysterious incident involving a Cypriot airliner en route to Athens. Helios Flight 522 crashed on August 14th 2005 near Athens Greece killing all on board. Today we look at what lead up to the tragedy.
Also knowing that Andreas wasn't originally scheduled to work that flight and subbed in so that he could work with his fiance, who was also a flight attendant on that flight, makes this all the more heartbreaking.
To not only realize that you are the only one conscious on board must have been terrifying for him, but still to try and save anyone else from getting hurt is heroic of him
Checking that the pressurization was set to AUTO was part of the checklist, yes. The pilots did make that mistake. Still, imagine being the engineer who left it on manual and living with that knowledge for the rest of your life.
Salute to Andreas as he did his best effort with limited knowledge in that hypoxic condition.
Huge respect to Andreas for taking the plane out of the city, may he rest in peace Including the rest poor souls 🙏
Very sad, we don't hear much about Prodromou bravely steering the plane away from the populated areas or the reason why he alone was the only one conscious..
RIP to all who died that day and salute to Andreas who tried to save the plane.True hero😞
I love you my little sister I love you my cousin I love you uncle I will never forget all off you... 121 souls pass away... I wanna meet with you again
This is so unfortunate. Imagine all it took was one switch in the wrong position. It just shows that whether you have 5 years or 30 years flying experience, follow the checklist properly
He steered it away from a major city knowing damn well he couldn’t land it, truly a hero
Andreas - you are a hero. Even with hypoxia, you thought of others. Thank you for trying. Rest In Peace.
Finally a short video that gives all details I loved it
What that Steward did is truly heartbreaking yet right thing to do. What a nightmare do make that decision, rest in peace
Man that’s so sad.
Modern cockpit alarms should be more INFORMATIVE.
That Stewart was a hero, saved a extra 100 maybe more lives by steering the aircraft away from Athens if that did happen it would be maybe worst 737 crash ever. He was a big hero also that he tried his best to save his life as he knew he was only the person alive therefore he declared a Squak 7700, and said Mayday which didn’t transfer into the radio, steered the aircraft away and he tried to crash land with flaps, spoilers and speed brakes and landing gear was also down his speed was a bit slow but he hit a good place however he did pass away sadly.
If there's any silver lining here, its that everyone was unconscious when the plane went down.
This is absolutely heartbreaking.
15 Years today 14.08.20 May the souls of those who perished, rest in eternal peace :'(
My dad knew the captain he was fired from channel express now known as Jet2. My dad had his run ins with captain Hans-Jürgen Merten during his month or so working together this being said they had a couple lay overs together and apparently outside of work he was a laugh. My dad was hit hard to hear about the crash. Reasons for him Being let go by Jet2 are not 100% known but my dad has said it was down to a list of things the kicker being him cutting corners.
