The migration of Irish families in the 1830s
led to the growth of Catholicism in Macon Georgia.
St. Joseph's Catholic
Church constructed in 1889 through 1903 of a Gothic Revival style.
It has a
Carrara marble altar. White Carrara marble comes from the
Carrara area of
Italy near Tuscany and Florence. For centuries stone workers mined the
quarries and sculptors carved the statues and altars adorning the many
magnificent cathedrals there
such as the duomo in Florence.
The domes perhaps inspired the cupola
at St.
Joseph's in Macon, Georgia.
The Orvieto also has beautiful stained glass windows.
The stained glass in St.
Josephs at Macon came from Bavaria, Germany.
