And the tests we did afterwards in the yard nearly knocked the windows out of the school building. Fun times. Too bad all the generations after 1970 missed out on absolutely all the fun in education.

I ran a biodiesel rig down in Peru for about three months. We heated the (filtered) used cooking oil in a recycled (~40 gallon) water heater. With enough time in that stage you can boil off any water that's in the oil. I then added both a measured amount of methanol and lye and let that heat some more. The water heater assembly had a clear tube connection below it which allowed the glycerine to be dropped out of the mixture. Using a complicated system of pumps, the biodiesel then goes to the first of three bubble tanks. Each cleaning stage was in an approximately 65-gallon tank with a typical aquarium air bubbler at the bottom. Once it's made the rounds it's then ready to be stored in a 55-gallon drum. We ran the volunteer truck on 100% biodiesel and it ran just fine. The glycerine then is stored and turned into soap in a different process.

Glycerin is used as an ADDITIVE in some soap formulations. Unless extra steps are done to separate glycerin from natural soaps, there is a bit of glycerin left in the finished soap already, adding more makes the soap less "drying". Someplace around 10% glycerin by weight is common for hand/face soaps.

i'm not too sure but the gel that formed could be some kind of soap. I've made biodiesel in the past and it usually formed when some water was present in the mixture, it can happen because there is some moisture left in the vegetable oil or because the hydroxide absorbed it from air, especially if it has been conserved for a long time (maybe in a not completely air-tight container). To avoid that, I usually pre heat the oil to about 120°C in order to remove all the water and "bake" the hydroxide to over 150°C to dry it completely. By the way if it doesn't interfere too much with the next reactions you can remove the solid junk and proceede anyway

For the yield on average triglycerides have a molar mass of around 885 g/mol and TNG mmass is 92.09 g/mol. This makes glycerine 10.41% of vegetable oils mass stoichiometrically.
If you started with 425ml vegetable oil (i know you said 400 but the markings on the beaker say otherwise) that would be 391 grams adjusted for density.
If you had a perfect yield the total amount of glycerine from oil would be 40.73 grams. So, finally, your approximate yeild would be 13.01% (5.3/40.73).
This is just my calculation based on web sources and, like stated in the video, getting a precisce triglyceride molar mass is difficult. Hope this was interesting.

The cloudiness in the alkali hydroxide solution in methanol is caused by carbonates btw. Those form very fast by air and the carbon dioxide in it reacting with the alkali hydroxide. They are extremely sensitive to CO2 besides being extremely hygroskopic.
The reactions shown really are cool and interesting, because they are so easy and only need a few very common chemicals. But the synthesis of nitroglycerine is very dangerous, especially when done correctly to get as much of a yield as possible. This needs to be done with very specific amounts of educts and at specific temperatures, producing lots of fully nitrated nitroglycerine, which is pretty sensitive. Doing the easier synthesis keeping the temperature rather low yields a mixture of nitroglycerine and partly nitrated glycerine, which is much safer.
And very cool detail that you mentioned that nitroglycerine isn't a typical nitrate but an ester!
Edit: Fun fact: The chemists working in dynamite factories (back then personal safety wasn't really a thing. Not comparable with today, where security is the most important thing. In the west at least, not really in china, india etc...) took up so much nitroglycerine by skin contact etc. that when they went on vacation, they had to take dilute (medical) nitroglycerin with them to inject from time to time, because they were so exposed to it and got such a tolerance that they suffered from extreme headaches without it!
Back then work in a lab meant lots of new discoveries, but I still prefer working in a modern lab with modern safety precautions^^

Glad this isn't censored. The processes involved in making bio diesel are nice, but i'd hope you approach it on a more industrious scale. The impurities in your nitro glycerine suggests that maybe the biodiesel video will produce it sub optimally or inefficiently, but i hope to be surprised. I view this as an important piece of 1800's technology and would hope that industrious folk retain this knowledge specifically because of it's parallels to soapmaking and biodiesel, which are themselves crucial technology for people to retain.

They say biodiesel has lower energy density than diesel, but quite a good alternative especially to places where a lot of used cooking oil as well as small scale cooking oil processing facilities.

Also pretty easy to grow oilseed rape, making it a pretty decent way of collecting solar energy. Prob better than pumping oil out of the ground, as biodiesel doesn't /add/ carbon to the current state :D

    • @willthecat3861
      @willthecat3861 Před 6 měsíci +1

"They" don't just say it... because they are repeating what other people say... the energy density of biodiesel is 38 Mj/kg, and for diesel its 45 Mj/kg ... that's about 15% less energy fo biodiesel.

Great upload, very interesting, very informative, and very well done. What was that object thrown into the mix that started spinning and did the mixing for you? Back in the days when we did chemistry at school, we had no such thing which makes me wonder if it is something that has come around later or if it was available three decades ago🤔. If it was, I would like to call my old chemistry teacher and make him come over and stir my coffee...once a week for two years.😅😅

My dad worked on a hydroelectric project in the '50s. He told how they used to use gelignite to make a camp-fire because it burns real good. Soldiers in Vietnam used C4 stuck to the bottom of a canteen cup to heat water for coffee, sometimes scooped out of claymore mines. Is there anything HE can't do?

Can ethanol alcohol be used instead?
What about just mixing burnt or slaked lime (from roasting oyster shells) with the oil, wouldn't calcium stearate precipitate out ? Calcium stearate being insoluble should just be filtered out. Would that make glycerin? Calcium stearate is supposedly what soap scum is that forms on a bath tub, comes from soap (sodium sterate ) reacting with calcium in the water.

Lazy, but it worked ! Nice video.
Good call to destroy it after synthesis - there really is no point 'storing' anything that you know how to make.
As a vasodilator, generally 5% in water sprayed under the tongue works.
Interestingly it still isn't fully understood why it works first on the veins before the arteries.
Maybe i got those switched around.
