  • FISH OILS UNDER FIRE: Do Omega-3s Cause Atrial Fibrillation and Arrhythmia?! 🐟💔"
🐟 Are omega-3 fatty acids, typically derived from fish oil, as beneficial as we once thought? A new study is shaking things up, suggesting a link between fish oil supplementation and atrial fibrillation. Let's dive deep into the science and separate fact from fiction!
    🎥 Intro:
Dr. J introduces the topic, addressing the long-held belief in the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for long-term healthspan.
Highlights a recent study in the journal Circulation, a systematic review, and meta-analysis, reporting a potential link between fish oil and atrial fibrillation, a serious heart condition.
    🔬 Breaking Down the Study:
Dr. J emphasizes the importance of not jumping to conclusions based on mainstream media interpretations.
Discusses the specifics of the study: over 81,000 patients across 7 clinical trials with an average follow-up of 5 years.
Highlights the average age of participants (65 years old) and the increased prevalence of atrial fibrillation in this age group.
    📊 Key Findings and Context:
Discusses the doses of fish oil used in the studies, noting that higher doses (over 4g per day) were linked to atrial fibrillation.
Emphasizes that typical therapeutic doses of fish oil are around 800-1000mg of combined EPA+DHA daily.
Points out that 5 out of the 7 studies showed no significant difference between fish oil and control groups regarding atrial fibrillation.
    🧠 Thinking Critically:
Encourages viewers to consider their own context and individual health when interpreting these findings.
Highlights the role of stress, anxiety, and recent health challenges (like the COVID-19 pandemic) in affecting heart health.
    💡 Practical Takeaways:
Dr. J recommends caution with high-dose fish oil, especially for individuals over 65.
Advises viewers to stick to recommended doses and consult with their healthcare practitioners before making changes to their supplement regimen.
Reaffirms the importance of personalized, evidence-informed approaches to health.
    🚀 Conclusion:
Summarizes the findings and stresses that while the study raises valid questions, it does not conclusively prove that fish oil causes atrial fibrillation.
Encourages viewers to be critical thinkers and consult their healthcare providers for personalized advice.

Thanks for the info. For some years and until very recently, I was taking three capsules of 1000MG (500MG DHA/EPA) Fish Oil/day from the U.S. VA (Veteran's Admin) for triglycerides, but they sent out a letter saying new studies show it is not effective so they stopped dispensing and removed it from the VA formulary. If I still want or think I need it, it will have to be OTC out-of-pocket. Will wait to see how my triglycerides are during my next scheduled labs in 6 mos.

@Dr.J What dose of EPA/DHA would you say maybe optimal for a 61 year old male? Thank you in advance for your reply.
