It is the third most widely used supplement in the United States. But there can be a big difference when it comes to prescription-quality fish oil and the kind found in over-the-counter supplements.

My retina surgeon prescribed a daily high quality fish oil over 25 years ago as nutritional support for weak retinas. I've had no retina issues since. Meanwhile, although crippling arthritis runs in my family, I'm experiencing very few arthritic joint problems (and I'm over 70 yo). High blood pressure also runs in my family and my blood pressure runs consistently normal to low even though I'm not a skinny minny nor particularly athletic or fit. Due to a traumatic event in my 20's, I experienced and was diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety. I do take some medication, but if I skip my fish oil supplements I'm both very anxious and depressed, even cranky, within 72 hours of being without fish oil. I have a minor heart problem that my cardiologist keeps an eye on, but nothing more than that. Perhaps I'm just very, very lucky. But anecdotally at least, I believe 25+ years of quality fish oil has made very positive contributions to my health and mental well being, and I will not be without it until my last day on earth. Of course, big pharma wants to prescribe their very expensive "pure" Vascepa fish oil compound, and perhaps it's fabulous, so they're going to say that OTC fish oils are junk, possibly even dangerous. Bottom line: they can't make $$$$$ off natural fish oils. As the old saying goes: follow the money. And, if you take OTC fish oil supplements, be sure to purchase a brand that has 3rd party testing of its product for safety and quality. Read the fine print!

back in 1998 when I was 36, my cholesterol was at 580 with triglycerides at over 2500. after a year of medications and radical dietary change, my cholesterol was below 190, but triglycerides remained steady over 1000. my cardiologist put me on 1200mg of fish oil, twice a day. after 1 month (with NO other medications) my triglycerides were down below 200. I asked him, "whats next"? he said "bump it to 2400 twice a day, and go have yourself a good life". its now 24 years later, running 2000mg twice per day, with my cholesterol and triglycerides in health balance. there may be some "questionable" test results out there, but I'm the walking and talking example of someone who was once a walking solid, now living a pretty darn good life....... and yep, I recommend fish oil to EVERYONE I know........

Fish oil stopped my Omega-6 inflammation issues that led to acute prostatitis. I love trail mix and nuts, and most of us consume too many seed oils. The Omega-3 balanced out the Omega-6, so now I can eat trail mix again with no issues. It took me 5 years to figure this out. I dealt with a lot of debilitating pain throughout the past 5 years, and the urologist had no answers. Essentially, seed oils and overconsumption of Omega-6 fatty acids in general can lead to prostate cancer.

Could be the case in someone whose diet is deficient in essential fatty acids. There are two essential fatty acids linoleic acid and alpha linolenic acid. Other are considered desirable but apparently the body is able to make the fats it needs out of these two components. Readily available food sources in the West include flax seed, sunflower seeds, walnuts, soybean oil and canola oil.
One theory I have heard is that consuming excess amounts of Omega 3 oils can cause abnormalities in the cell walls because the cell will incorporate these molecules into the cell walls in place of the correct fatty acids. the further argument is that these abnormalities contribute to the development of cancer. That's the argument, but I can't assess its validity,
The essential fatty acids are believed to function both as vitamins and as building blocks. I can only speak for myself but I don't regularly take Omega 3 supplements. I take flaxseed oil and when the supplement I have which contains Omega 3 runs out, I am not going to replace it.
I think sardines in oil are a better source. I have at times eaten these (sorry fishees). The small cans are uniformly pretty good regardless of brand. There are some large cheap cans available which are kind of yucky. I don't think anyone needs to eat more than two or three cans a month to get what they need. I would say, concentrate on getting essential oils in the diet.

One big challenge is that manufacturers can't say their supplement does anything, because then they have to prove it. Experts don't want to say a thing helps a certain way, because results *will* vary from person to person. FDA doesn't want to get involved. So the compromise is "this product may help with such and such; ours has X hundred mg in it."

I took high potency fish oil liquid to help control triglycerides. Went from 180 to 98 in 2 months. There is more to controlling heart attacks than taking a single supplement. However, they talk about oxidized fats...and I sometimes push the envelope when eating meats a couple days over "sell by"! Usually the fat goes first in tasting slightly rancid. Does this constitute a dangerous oxidized fat (lipid)? I eat NO processed foods so hopefully I am in an otherwise good place. If not, let me go quick. I really am getting bored with this already...

Omega 3 does not work alone. Omega 3 needs to be taken with Vitamin B complex to lessen the risk of AD and the timing of the dosage does matters. WRT to Cardiovascular health, Omega 3 needs Vitamin D/Melatonin and Vitamin K2 levels in the blood to be high enough to work plus Insulin levels must be low. Most pill are high dosages because the metabolic absorption of pills is less effective that natural sources. So you need less if the source is natural OR more if the source is man made/ artificial. Why? More often than not natural sources are digested and absorbed slowly ...BUT man made pills are quickly absorbed and excessive amounts are then quickly flushed out of the body

As I'm taking it daily in combination with a pharmaceutical anti inflammatory , Brufen 800, panadol and nutritional supps inc glucosamine/Chondroiton, Curcummin, Vit D etc its important to me of course that I don't counter any benefits of one with detrimental effects of, say, the fish oil.

Or you can go to the source of the omega 3 in fish oil and get it from what the fish eat. I take algae oil. It has no fish burps. It is liquid and a teaspoon of it has no fishy taste. Just started it so I’m trying it for a month to see if there is any change in my health.

The fish they eat replaces the cows, pigs, and chickens they otherwise would have eaten. If you get your nutrition from plants you would be even healthier. I get my DHA Omega-3 from an algae based supplement.
I also eat ground flax seed, walnuts, etc. for ALA Omega-3.
You can get all the Omega-3 you need without resorting to fish or fish oil.
To make sure you get enough, take an algae based supplement.

Within 15 minutes of consuming it my concentration is better and my joint pain goes away. It’s a great brand and worth cutting something from your monthly budget to incorporate Lysi in!

Omega 3 might reduce inflammation but it has no effect on joint mobility or health. Large studies have shown people have higher rates of health problems. Another problem is the supplement industry is unregulated and you don't know the quality or effectiveness of anything you buy.

It's always best that the omega-3 oil be taken in by eating the fish fresh. Supplements are like every processed food, they are derived from extended manufacturing and undergo changes that degrades the beneficial nutrients out of its original source.
But then, another question arises: won't cooking the fish also oxidize the the oil content in the meat?

I agree.
