Hugh has felt double crossed for 32 years, he's a scorned man. The deal was the stranglers would break up if anyone in the band left. They didn't break up and now they sing the songs that he wrote and he's well pissed off.
Likely not much more exists. The show this was filmed for, The New Music, typically only recorded a couple songs in order to splice together short clips like this into a multi cam edit
I am convinced Hugh died and was replaced by a doppelganger around 1982 as here he is happy, laughing and engaged from 1983 to now he's lost his sense of humour, doesn't appear happy and comes across as bitter, just a totally different bloke to the hugh from 77-81 quite bizarre.
@@elizacoleman5901 I know what you mean but with Hugh it was uniquely an overnight change. I think maybe it was to do with the new CBS record contract and having another chance at commercial success and he decided to adopt a more professional stance with the media and the band. He's never really regained that original bloke he was as now he seems to be bitter about the stranglers not breaking up 32 years ago and them carrying on without him and breaking the unwritten agreement they all had.
@@marcdewolf7334 You are probably right about being more professional and commercial.Look at the one in a million video with that jigging and dancing Hugh was doing. The stranglers did loose their edge and should have gone out gracefully instead of the silly string of new recruits even to present day.Hugh is still part owner of the band so I guess in reality he can never leave.
@@elizacoleman5901 the silly clothes we're down to his agent who had connection in the fashion industry I think she was called Jackie Castellani, I think she made Hugh a bit of a clothes peg, she also turned his head to more pretentious social events in London. Hugh changed and became nasty. He began to treat the fan base with disdain, the very people paying his wages. He wasn't happy during his last 5 years in the band and he doesn't look much happier since leaving.
Both playing different guitars. is that just after all the gear was stolen? Looks like Dave has the right stuff though. Shame the track cuts off halfway through.
yes mate, just after the gear got ripped off,.. imagining Dave was able to get a hold of the Obe to suit him . Yeah shame it cuts out/ great footage . Legendary 'HughinBlack' tee on display as well :)
Ahh yes. The real Stranglers ❤
Saw them today in Germany. I liked it a lot.
JJ Burnel and Hugh Cornwell. Never again will there be a universe where these two meet.
I'm sure they'll randomly run into each other at some point.
@@RossMcCarthy1990 they randomly met when JJ dropped a hitchhiker off at Hugh's squat

Excellent ! 😎
I was there - what a night. They ripoed
They were such a comedic double act back then. We don't sing about politics. Nuclear Device is about girls. LOL.
I suggest you listen to these lyrics pretty political
It's an ironic comment. Of course it's about politics. Sorry if I am inadvertantly spreading fake news.@jefflevinson669
I was at that concert
I wonder where the rest of the gig footage is.....love to know?

Thanks for the clarification - makes sense as all the footage is from the first song of the gig. They probably legged it out after that.
I think the gig must have been shortly after they had their gear stolen whilst touring North America and relied on hired instruments.
I don't know if it's just my phone or what but I can't hear it at all! 😒

I sort of agree with you, maybe it happens to us all but we just don't realise it ?

Absolutely - like he aged 10 years in 12 months!

But he gave you ten albums and the band be grateful.

yon old 'rented' gear mate. .. great footage . . . . just when you think you've seen it all!! . . .

JJ has spent more years playing non Fender basses than he has playing Fenders. His Precisions didn't have Fender pickups either.
@@ALV-gs1xg Interesting. That's the first I've heard about the non-Fender pickups.
Ironically, Jean Jacques and Hugh from the interview are the only ones still alive...
Pitiful 😠
