Do Americans Know This About The Philippines? 🇵🇭 (I didn't)

  • Today in this video I'm joining the Intramuros tour in Manila. This is a free tour that anyone can do when visiting the Philippines.
I discuss in this video how most Americans like myself were not taught about how America colonized the Philippines. I was not taught how we stole the Philippines from Spain and then prevented the Philippines from gaining their independence for over 4 decades. Why is that?
In this video, I try the local street food called "Dynamite", and also some chicken curry at a small mom-and-pop store.
Big thanks to my buddy Steven from Guam for making the video for me and sharing his thoughts on Guam's situation in regards to being part of America still. He's an uber-talented guy, please check out his work here!

I had the same opinion as the guy's before, that China is only after business. Yes and No, as we can obviously see happening in the Philippine seas and islands. How can islands close to the Philippines (and other Southeast Asian nations) AND VERY FAR from China be China's islands? As China claims. When China was poor, they were not claiming those islands. Let's take it from there. Small and poor nations cannot fight huge and moneyed country. They obviously need help from a superpower.

Welcome to the Philippines. I am an American expat who has lived here for 5 years. I have been married to my filipina wife for 24 years. I was a history teacher in the USA and I did teach about America and its treatment of its territories. It wasn't always very pretty. The philipino people are its greatest treasure. I love it here. We live in the Taygaytay area and it is much cololer up here. So if it gets too hot in Manila, come on up here and cool off. We do have the Lake Taal and Volcano nearby, one of the more scenic areas of the Philippines. We live out in the country, or as I like to call it, the Jungle. Have a great time in the Philippines.

I agree that avocado and mango are a good combination, not only healthy, but the color is also beautiful!
It is a pity that many people cannot see clearly what is happening in the world now.
Once Guam is taken over by China, Guam and the Philippines will be in greater danger, but I believe the current president of the Philippines knows it very well!
Your friend also doesn’t know that Taiwan has never belonged to China, but in order to achieve their goal of invading the world,
they have bribed nearly half of our politicians and former presidents!
It is better to be independent than to let China take over, but once Guam becomes independent, will China give up its aggression?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. Once the United States leaves, the possibility of China taking over Guam will greatly increase!
Next, the entire Southeast Asia will become the next Xinjiang! I didn’t expect the first half of the episode to be so heavy. In any case, I wish the people of Guam the best!
Perhaps it is the history of being colonized for many years that has shaped the perseverance and optimistic personality of Filipinos today. I have to admire them!
After watching this episode in a sad mood, you Nick are the historian to me! You did a super great job, thanks a lot for sharing! 👍😍👏

I respect Americans that acknowledge the bad things that America has done in the past and is currently doing. It takes a lot of character to do this. Because I’ve met those who always defend America no matter what. So kudos to you, Nick. Every country has their dark days and good citizens/countrymen, in my opinion, are those that can be open and honest about their country’s history and current situation. In doing so, they truly care about the country..criticize when they’re doing the wrong things and support when they’re doing good things! 😃

But have you learned about the many good things USA has done to support Phils? After every typhoon, what do the Asian neighbors contribute to help Phils.... then compare it to what USA does to help. Parking Navy ships offshore and running their DESAL plants to max to provide clean potable fresh water to Phils, not to mention the millions of dollars given to Phils after each disaster. So yea, compare this recent (last 50 years) and current efforts to support our friends to Philippines to the bullshit policies of 100 years ago. Go for it. Educate yourself.

New subs here, Nick. Welcome to the Philippines. Glad that you talked about the longstanding history of the US-Philippines relationship. Because not every American, more so with other foreigners, know that. That's why almost everyone in the Philippines can somehow speak English, because it was once a colony of the US. The Filipinos have assimilated the culture and influence of the US into theirs. But it's the hospitality and friendliness of the Filipinos that always win the hearts of foreigners. 😊😊😊

I think what is unique about Filipinos is that we were ruled by the most powerful civilizations of every era throughout history. When Islam civilization spread throughout Europe from the 10th centruy, even conquering Byzantine Empire, Philippines had powerful Muslim kingdoms. When Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand heralded the Spanish era, sponsored Columbus to discover America to establish Spanish civilization in Latin America, the same monarch couple sponsored Ferdinand Magellan to discover the Philippines. Thus, Filipinos learned western-style civil law and Christianity for 400 years, and become the only Christian-majority in Asia while retaining a strong Muslim minority in Mindanao. When United States became the most powerful nation under the democratic system at the turn of the 20th century, Philippines became a US Colony, learned about democracy as a political system, public schools as an educational system, and became the only English speaking country in the Asia, using English as our medium of instruction in school and official language (and nominally Pilipino) in business and law. But while we appreciated the advances brought by powerful civilizations, there was always the desire to prove that the brown-skinned "Indio" is equal to the best that the White civilizations can offer. Juan Luna's Spolarium won the Gold medal over the best European painters in Madrid, the silver medal was earned by another Filipino, Felix Hidalgo with his "Las Virgenes Cristianas Expuestas al Populacho”. Therefore, even as we fought for our independence, we recognized and retained the best aspects of the civilized world.

Two unknown facts among many about US -Philippines history :
    1. US minted separate currency only circulated in The Philippine Islands. I'ts US dollar version but can't be used in mainland USA.
    2. Texas " The Lone Star State" was known as New Manila during Spanish period. Similarly, even the state flag has red white and blue colours.
Great video thanks a lot for including and for revisiting the US-Philippine relations. Please Visit American War Cemetery in Manila. We have also a kind of "Alamo" in the middle of the sea called Fort Drum. It was America's concrete and unsinkable battleship.

I think your friend needs to learn what China has done to other nations specifically in Africa, certain SEA nations and Haiti. China is no different from the US or Russia and is very influential in many sectors especially in the UN as a permanent member. That influence has allowed them to be dominant in many organizations.
Anyways, I feel our educational system in the US is severely lacking and broken. Very little is covered in global history class and even our own American history. There are many important key events that students never learn about unless you read outside the class. I was shocked to learn that many adults never heard of the trail of tears or the Tulsa race massacre. My history teacher in HS only covered the Spanish/American war and how the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico were acquired.
I learned about the Philippines through my grandma who is Filipina. Her paternal family arrived in Cebu through Mexico in the 1870s. Her grandfather and father were scouts for the Americans during WWII. She lost her grandpa and many relatives during the battle of manila. Her family was able to escape a few days before that. My American grandpa was a newly turned 18 year old shipped in the Philippines during WWII and I heard a lot about the Philippines from him as well as from other veterans who were stationed at Clark airbase.

From Wikipedia: "When the Philippines gained independence from the United States in 1946, many Americans chose to permanently settle there. Until the mid-1990s, Americans were concentrated in the cities of Angeles and Olongapo, northwest of Metro Manila, because of the large US military bases there." So I guess many Americans come there (also) because they have family and/or a history there.

I have many relatives and family in guam and they happy being what Guam is now. The only ones who wants independence are the communist and leftist. Guam can be independent but it will be long struggle. Guam is very far away from the rest of the islands.
Singapore was a success because China was still not powerful as what they are today. Singapore already got a foothold and developed rapidly. Singapore is in the heart of Southeast Asia so they have many potential trading partners that are within reach. Geographically Guam is at a disadvantage.

My father loves american so much. Its because, he was born and raised during American time here in the Philippines.I heard him sing Star spangled banner at home. I asked him, what did he sung, and he told me,it was an americas national anthem.I wonder how he knew this song.according to him, they sung this song in school and even raised American flag in school. Their teacher were mostly americans that time. He also lot of American friends who were then, they were neighbors that time. But during world war 2, some of them returned in US but others, according to him, died in war. The frustatration of my father was when the statehood did not fulfilled. There was a plan of statehood that time through plebescite but some Filipino officials that time opposed it. Its because, they are sure that statehood will win. Anyway.even until at present, Philippines still a part of America.

I'm a Filipino American originally from Tacloban, raised in Central Texas, and currently residing in Houston. While I don't know what white wash Texas school you went to, my Central Texas/Belton Texas and Troy Texas education provided me with a comprehensive understanding of Filipina and American history that wasn't whitewashed. Additionally, I highly value your friend's opinion, and it's essential to acknowledge that not all Americans engage in war games. It's crucial to address China's unchecked influence, as failure to do so could result in its dominance over the entire region. I suggest seeking the perspective of Taiwan to gain further insight into this matter. Overall, Guam's relationship with America provides security, economic stability, citizenship rights, and cultural connections that contribute to the island's well-being and development.

You forgot the part where Spain asked for $20 Million to save face losing in the mock battle of Manila Bay where Admiral George Dewey became a hero. Before the 1960s, Roxas Boulevard was called Dewey Boulevard in honor of him. I mean is that crazy or what?

guam people looks like indonesia , filipino and malay. I agree with steven, i think china WOULD NOT take guam or any other small territory island. China is already busy taking care of its country itself with billions of people in a big teritorry like that, definitely it is not an easy cheesy job to do. IF you have so many territories , when something bad is happened, all you save in the first place, of course the nearest from the capital, rite? there is no way you will take care other territories located far far away from your mainland. We all know which country is the most interfere or "kepo" in this galaxy...

Korea too....but to the Philippines that gave the lives of its valiant soldiers for the cause of freedom during WW2 whose capital, Manila laid in ruins , n as a matter of fact, the second most devastated city sfter WW2, the US did nothing much to help the Philippines like it did to its former enemy , Japan while the Philippines who millions of civilians n infrastructures were given a measly aid....the Philippines deserved more, being the most loyal friend n ally of the US up to now

Spain occupied the Philippines fir 400 years but they have not worked to teach Filipinos how to speak their language and even have discriminated against their own Spanish citizens who were born in the Philippines then. This is the reason why a Filipinos no longer speak Spanish. The Americans were quick to teach English when they took over that is why is a short 50 years, a lot of Filipinos know how to speak English. BTW, Spanish was taught in our universities and colleges un5il the late 1980's but Filipinos just did see any use for it anymore so it was dropped in a lot if school curricula. Then again, in retrospect, we would have a lot to gain from learning that language, seeing that is the 2nd mist spoken language in the world after Chinese.

U.S taking over (Buying) philippines was the best political move during that period, Bcoz DUtch, Japan, & British were literally waiting by the sidelines ready to invade. It wouldve cost a million Flipino lives comapred to how U.S taken over the Filipinos, but still live were lost but then again couldve been much worse, way way worse,,,, Maybe WW2 extended by a year or more if different Power occupied philiipines in 1900

Welp, spain occupied ph for 300+ years with more or less resulted in 600 thousands more or less civilian life lost.
America colonized ph for 48 years minimum was 250,000 civilian life lost to morethan a million life lost
Americans set up internment camps all over the ph.. so techincally americans over the 48 years caused more civilian casualties compared to the 300+ years rule of spain.

Hawaii was an independent island before it was annexed by the US. It became a state by a referendum with 94% vote. Dont spread wokeness. Hawaii would be a 3rd world hell hole if not for the Europeans. Stop your white fragility you woke people.

It is unfortunate the many Filipinos watching this guy's vlog are not getting his point. America (or Americans for that matter) are not heroes which most Filipinos think. America created that image of being the hero and savior and many naive, narrow- minded Filipinos believed that even to this day. Much respect to you Nick K for being humble.

Your discourse sounds redundant. Don't be problematic about our history with the US because our country has moved on. Japan and America are on good terms despite Hiroshima and the world is at peace with Germany. it's woke Americans who've got the problem. By the way, that kind of ice cream is made out of coconut milk which you don't have, and we've been eating that since childhood for a long long time.

    • @NickKTravel
      @NickKTravel  Před 2 měsíci +5

Woke woooooke... everything is woke nowadays lol. Learning history and discussing it, woke. Learning from the past so we don't repeat it in the future, woke. I'm simply asking the question whether or not most Americans know this fact about history. If I said anything inaccurate, please correct me instead of straw manning me. I never said there was a problem between the Philippines and the US, or Japan and the US for that matter. Yeah that ice cream was tasty too
