If you have a PS5, Never Do This

  • If you have a PS5 & use external hard drive, NEVER do this! Here's why... Here's some important tips for using Playstation 5 extended storage! I'm actually surprised that some Playstation users are doing this wrong. When using an external hard drive with your PS5, remember to ALWAYS use the back USB ports & NEVER use the front one. If you do this, your Playstation 5 extended hard drive will not work. Always remember to safely eject your PS5 external hard drive BEFORE unplugging it.. If you don't do this, it's possible you will have corrupt data on your hard drive.

From a viewer's standpoint, yes, waaaay more efficient use of time.
From CZcams's standpoint, however, they actually would rather have (and encourage) content creators to make it as long as possible (because its more advertising time). The algorithm actually favors longer videos and are more likely to recommend.

I learned these tips from experiencing them myself and had so much trouble. I had to reformat or reindex the external hard drive several times back when I first got my PS5 to the point where I was considering returning the PS5 to the store. The sad part is, even when I disconnected the external hard drive through the system menu first, then unplugged it, it would always result in the same issue either way. On or off, showing connected or not, it caused some weird corruption.
Even after the updates that Sony released, I’m afraid if I ever disconnect the hard drive in any way again that I’ll have these issues, but I hope not.

If I may add 2 extra tips. Do not run rebuild database in recovery mode with an external drive plugged in. Ive tried this twice and each time multiple games on the external drive become corrupted. Also if you are transfering more than 300GB of games I would suggest breaking it up to 150-200GB at a time, and restarting the PS5 before each session to avoid corrupted game transfers. This has happened to me at least 3 times before I figured it out. It will also be faster because the transfer speed slows down significantly after a continuous tranfers of over 300GB. BTW for reference I'm using a Seagate Barracuda SSD on one PS5 and a Samsung T5 SSD on another.

Also a good idea to set your USB ports to be always on, so that your drive won’t auto shut off/disconnect if you use rest mode (default shuts them off after 3 hours). You can set this in Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
For the drive, Sony actually recommends using the USB-C port on the front first, if your drive has the cable for it. (If not, then yes, use the back ports - the front USB-A port is not super speed).

    - Don't plug in headsets or other accessories to the front either, that front port is solely used for charging purposes
    - ps5 games are designed to take advantage of the internal ssd so they can't be played from the external hard drive, only stored there. You have to move the ps5 game back to the internal ps5 storage in order to play it, which is still faster than downloading/copying it again especially if there are a lot of updates. Sony is in the process of allowing you to play games from an external ssd (not hdd) for a future update
    - ps4 games can be played from an external hard drive
    - hard drives have to be plugged directly into the ps5 USB port, they can't be plugged into a USB hub that is plugged into the ps5
    - you can also use the USB-C port on the front of the ps5 to plug in an external hard drive, which can actually achieve faster read /write speeds if the external supports it
    - you can have multiple hard drives plugged in at the same time, but you can only have 1 active at a time
    - If you found any of these tips helpful, feel free to subscribe :) I make call of duty zombies content and as you can see I enjoy doing in depth research for every topic

Thanks for the Quick and very helpful tips on this subject. Some info that I think would have also been helpful to include in this video includes:
    >You do provide technical details about the minimum and maximum external HDD/SSD sizes that the PS5 supports.
    >You do indicate that not all HDD/SSD are compatible. It would be valuable information to also include details about
what type of Format properties should be used when formatting an external HDD/SSD to use with the PS5.
It is my understanding that when using a USB Flash/Thumb Drive to import/export Save Game Data, etc. that it must be formatted to either
FAT32 or exFAT in order to use it for these purposes.

Thanks for the recommendation on the hard drive. I’ll check it out.
I have another tip about disconnecting the hard drive. You should always disconnect it from the console’s settings every time you turn your PS5 off. In the event of a power outage, your hard drive will be unsafely disconnected from the system, even if the PS5 is already off. The hard drive is always connected to the system, and a power outage, or turning a wall switch or power strip off if the PS5 is connected to either one of those will cause an unsafe disconnect.

I realize this is two years late, but it’s funny how many people think that looks better. It washes out the image when you do that. It’s artificially brightening the picture, without enhancing the color, like actual HDR content. In other words, you’re shining a brighter light onto existing colors that haven’t been enhanced to pop and compensate for that light shining on them. The only time “HDR Always On” looks ok is with an OLED, or QD-OLED, thanks to the TV’s deeper colors. Otherwise, forcing HDR on non-HDR games makes them look brighter, but overall worse. So many people think brightness = good picture. It doesn’t.

    A few additional tips:
    1. You can use the front USB-C port for external storage. But I'd strongly recommend anyone to use the ports on the rear. You'll need the front USB Type-C port in the future for PlayStation's next VR headset. That's if -off course- you're planning on getting one in the future. I'd strongly recommend everyone to use the ports in the rear. The front USB-C uses a controller with Display-alternate mode which suggests that it's highly likely you'll need it for VR. You can get a good male Type-C to female Type-A adapter for a few bucks if you haven't got a Type-A (OG) cable in the box.
    2. Don't put a USB-hub between your PS5 and your external drive. It will simply not work. You'll have to put the external drive directly to your PS5.
    3. USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 Gen. 1 are the same. Higher number are just fine, just make sure you're drive is at least 3.0.
    4. If you can afford it, get an external SSD instead of an external HDD. CZcams channel Digital Foundry has a good video showing what the benefits are of playing PS4 games from an external SSD.

The hard drive that I was able to get was the Easystore 2TB hard drive that was initially plugged into my PS4, then I transferred it to the PS5. Was a really simple process for transferring it over, didn’t require rocket science to do.

Don’t rebuild your date base while the drive is connected..unplug it first then replug.

I’ve been told that HDD drives are slower than SSD drives

      You can buy external SSD

Jaden you are correct. Buy an external SSD 👍
They are more expensive but imo don't bother with a HDD, either stick with the ps5 as is and just delete games when finished to save space or buy an external SSD 😊

front port has different voltage or is not usb3 compliant most likely. It's there as a charging dock for the controller. External drives and such usually require more power than what is necessary to charge a battery. I have a laptop like this too. It has 3 usb ports. The one on the left side of the laptop is USB2 1.5v The two on the left are USB3. I wasn't aware of this till I attempted to connect the Elgato USB video capture device to the laptop. It requires USB3.

I think the manual says they prefer you use the USB-C port for plug in up front for external HDD.
