- BMW’s all-new 2020 F 900 R naked bike (starting at $8,995) certainly made an impression on us during its official US press ride introduction in Santa Barbara, California (learn more in the 2020 BMW F 900 R Review First Ride). And after logging a few hundred more miles on this Berlin-built motorcycle we’re even bigger fans of it, especially for around-town commuting.
--
In spite of its relatively hefty 465-pound curb weight, the F 900 R impresses with athletic handling. It goes around low-speed bends better than it should for a motorcycle of its size, plus the suspenders filter the effects of worn pavement well. Much of the credit goes to its well-calibrated suspension components, which are some of the best we’ve sampled on a production streetbike at this price point. Bridgestone’s awesome Battlax S21 rubber further complements the handling-offering track-grade grip and sure-footed stability at speed.
We’re equally mesmerized with the character and power dynamic of the 895cc parallel twin. It combines the best features of a traditional V-twin, including punchy-feeling bottom-end torque, with the intrinsic rumble and rowdy intake roar that makes this configuration so lovable. Yet the engine is much more compact, which aids in packaging and reduces weight and complexity.
The engine drinks fuel from a 3.4-gallon fuel tank, which could be bigger. On a side note, the F 900 XR version gets an extra 0.7-gallon capacity. During spirited riding we netted a 38-mpg average. This nets a range of 129.2 miles. A super-slick-looking 6.5-inch color display keeps tabs on machine vitals and is manipulated via Motorrad’s signature multifunction wheel--a feature introduced on the premium K 1600 GTL eight years ago. Furthemore, the display can be paired via Bluetooth with the free BMW Motorrad Connected iOS app, which allows turn-by-turn navigation.
Other creature comforts include a cozy and well-supportive rider and passenger saddle. and the ability to adjust all of the control surfaces (levers, brake pedal, and handlebar). The rider can also choose between two global riding modes (Rain and Street). For a $350 upcharge, riders can access Ride Mode’s Dynamic and Dynamic Pro settings that enable IMU-powered automatic stability control and ABS. Bold LED lighting with optional corner functionality makes the R-bike especially friendly for night rides.
Riders who desire a fun and capable around-town naked bike will be pleased with the F 900 R. Factor in its ultra-high build quality and careful attention to subtle details, like the angled tire valve stems and braided steel brake lines, and you have a motorcycle that looks and rides much better than you’d anticipate based on MSRP.

MC Commute rules, Adam. I enjoy riding with you. Great commentary. Thanks for the video content and make sure to keep the rubber side down (when not yanking wheelies). Is the Z H2 MC Commute on the horizon? I know...I won't shut up about it. And keep the hair. Looks a bit wild. Like the riding. Just a bit nutso. 'Cause it's a motorcycle.
Hi Peter, thanks for the note. I appreciate your feedback. We do not have any plans on producing a video on the Z H2 but we'll just see how the next months go...
😊
This bike has been alluding me forever. I wanted the F 900 XR for so long, but this one flew under the radar. Then the BMW Roadster bug bit me. I have never heard Adam give such high praise for any bike's handling characteristics out of all the reviews I've seen from him across ALL bikes. That's really saying something about this F 900 R!!
The dash is so big it must act as a fly screen. I really like this bike.
The usual first-class review. One of the best channels on here.
Crazy that a 900 naked is considered middleweight nowadays
Thats somewhat because of EU regulations... its much easier to hit goals with bigger displacement at the same power output
The world gone crazy! We got bmw twin 900, and four cylinders honda 650 :)
1300 is the very top if we don't count cruisers
It’s more a middleweight based on power than displacement. Super bikes make over 200hp now, so 100hp is middling.
@@makiavel88 Yeah but the twin 900 is crazy and I'd rather have the 4 cylinder 250 from Kawasaki than that anemic Honda! No offence to Honda riders, you could probably buy another bike from what you save on maintenance and reliability.
These are some of my favorite things to watch on CZcams. I look forward to them.
Hi there,
Just wanted to drop you a quick note. Thanks for the fairly comprehensive ride review on this motorcycle. I did some research on the different makes and models within this class of motorcycle, and kept coming back to the BMW. Picked it up last Saturday and well I haven't been able to ride it much as DMV is still shut down and by appointment only here in Oregon. Rode it home from the dealership and OMGoodness!!! More to come I suppose. Thanks again as I don't rely on you tube content, but yours is fantastic!!! Thanks again and stay safe!!
Great review. This wasn't on my shortlist of new bikes to buy this year (once things go back to normal), but now it is.
Great video Adam, thanks so much!
I have an F800ST and it is amazing! When it came out it was class leading and it is the best bike I have ever ridden. Please shoot in 4k. Great review thanks for getting out there for this review!
Great review again, this may have been one of the best Adam. I’d be adding a bikini fairing and the hard top & cases for business commute and tours. I’d prefer a 5+ gallon tank. But clearly this thing could attack the 2 (ACH) with nearly anything. ✊🏼🏁
Quick question, why pass on the Ducati Monster 821 question? You meant the BMW so much better? I have Street Triple RS so just curious?
Wowee, definitely on my list for 2nd bike now. I am waiting for your review of the KTM Duke 890 R too. Be well bro 🤟🏽.
Love your commutes cool dude
Awesome review 👍
Nice review. Thanks!
This looks so good
I love my F800R 2014 and this F900R looks awesome.
Cool bike! Nice review. Hope to see you on on the new Ducati Streetfighter soon.
Nice review. It sounds like BMW nailed it with it's two new 900s.
Reminds me 1250 R I rode in Italy. Totally unfamiliar bike, roads, plus was raining when I picked it up in a rush hour at BMW Italy.. couldn’t choose better bike. Five days between Italy and Swiss. Can’t wait to test ride 2020 toys! Thanks for review and a reminder or a riding days. Wishes from across the pond!
I don't know any country that has a better road quality than Switzerland
3NITROUT The only thing, I found drivers not very friendly. In many cases even annoyed with bikers. But when the roads are clear of them.. heaven!
I watch all your video's!!!!!
Damn, that bike looks like fun!
I watched this review like 5 times already 😂
same
hahhaha loved this one. Wondering during the last two blocks whether you would say - id buy or not.. Kept me waiting and almost around the end i thought oh well he will not say it.. then boom last take will i buy this bike :D :D lol great vid made me wanna buy this bike too!
Play the end again he comes on back and says he'll buy it
Thanks Adam, such a knowledgeable and skill full motorcyclist . You are my go to man for reviews. How would you compare this to the Triumph Scrambler XC?
I love stability control with TC. You can really floor the throttle out of the turn. Stability control mandated on all cars from 2012. Slowly moving to bikes
Great review! Does the rider feel any heat riding this bike, especially from under the seat?
Nice review with the good stuffs about this bike. How do you compare with the s1000r?
It would be nice if you could do a walk around either at the beginning or the end of the commute and show us more details of the bike.
3:52 It picked up well from a complete stop on 2nd gear. Not bad!
Have watched it twice already:)
Thank you so much for taking this one for a spin in addition to F900XR! I've been heard!
man! You guys have so many cool cars on your roads that you dont even care to look around! I am such a petrol head........
I want this bike! But want to make sure a passenger would be comfortable enough. I ride about half by myself/half 2up. Felt every bump on my Street Triple R, though it was an awesome bike. Wonder if a r1250r would be better, but perhaps less flickable:/. Thoughts?
Good vibrations!
Do you think this would ok for a daily commute, say for around 70 miles around trip? I know it doesn’t have wind protection but I don’t mind that, and what mpg were you getting 👊
I don’t tour anymore so fuel capacity isn’t an issue. Saw this in blue snd it really didn’t appeal to me at all. This red is awesome
Very nice looking bike
That's bike is so clean for a naked looked like it would be very fun
Love it!
I want to see it compared to the KtM 890 Duke, did I miss how much the F900 R weighs ? and the price
I am just really curious, why won’t you answer the Ducati monster comparison question? I am considering buying my first bike this summer and I can’t decide which one to get between f900r and monster 821. I would really appreciate your opinion. Thanks
How does it compare with Z900 ? Price wise and performance wise?
Would you prefer the F 900 R with all these technical gadgets or a R nine T with the bulletproof boxer motor?
The way they've installed the LCD display makes it look like there is a fairing missing above the headlight assembly. Very strange looking IMO.
glsracer didn’t see it til I saw it, now it won’t go away😂. Looks like an Elvis haircut lol.
There's an optional screen
@@rayb5394 so now we know what happened, BMW saw another opportunity to get a few more bucks by offering an optional screen that should have been standard. For 9k USD I'd grab a CBR650R and be done with it.
@@glsracer Yes, I like the Honda, also the retro naked one, but this bike is in another category. I seen both the BMW and the Duke 790 and I like the KTM best.
Yep, display looks cheap. Not a fan of "riding with my cellphone" look. Expect a bit more style for this kind of money and not an entry level bike.
I am happy with my '16 F700GS....but sounds like this new F900R is fun.
Anybody have experience with both a GS and this bike? I'm currently riding a 2017 BMW R1200 GS Rallye and using it mostly for long distance rides and I love its suspension. But because of my bike weight issues with the GS, I'm thinking of replacing it with this one. I'm worried though how it would fare against the GS, in terms of suspension, on long distance rides.
Just bought this bike recently and loving every bit of it. Still breaking period so haven't tested to the full potential and dynamic pro. But overall build and ride quality is top-notch. Very easy to ride might be a little heavier but most of the weight at the bottom so nice center of gravity. It is an insanely balanced bike on low or high speed. Its TFT is just next level so much to play with. I named it SKY so I am in love with SKY :)
The only downside I found is fewer after-market mods are available but overall no need to do anything extra to the bike except the tail tidy.
Here in Canada it is really hard to find a base model available at the Dealers so with some accessories this can be little bit expensive but you can still order base model just need t wait for the delivery but even if it is a base model still is a lot of bike for it's price plus the BMW batch.
How has the reliability been?
@@keltecdan So far pretty good don't have any issue so far. The clutch was a little clunky but BMW replaced the clutch under the warranty and now it smooth and quick shift also works like a charm. The issue I had was maybe because the bike was part of an early production lot. But it is fixed now so I don't have any issues anymore 😍 so very happy with the bike so far.
@@puneetsehgal8200I’m thinking of buying a used 2021 model. Would you mind giving me an update on the reliable over 3 years? Being in Canada, how many KM have you travelled? Any other information would be splendid.
@@florme6494 I didn’t ride that much may be around 5k but I didn’t face any issue in 3 years it is pretty solid bike.
Adam, how is the rider heat on this compared to the 790 duke?
Please, Adam, clarify your answer for the Monster 821 question. Not clear if "this is not even close" means that they are both great but drastically different or if you consider Monster 821 much better than this. On power and torque topic we know Monster is much more agressive. I'm a fan from Brazil since Moto USA and was missing your valuable opinion on bikes! Best.
Please do a KTM 790, BMW f900r, Triumph 660 comparison. All great choices.
I had a f800r, this looks nice! I love my z900 and wouldn’t trade
Jimmy Theshark agree, the Z900 is the cheapest 4cyl offering in my country
Ditto
@@hathaway.1166 does the F 900 R also have 4cyl?
Awesome freakin bike. Seems like this MT07 sorta v-twin market is popping off as the best all around bikes. Anyone got any other recommendations to look into similar to these?
Street triple was refreshed this year too, speed twin has great reviews as well...z900 was refreshed also now with tc riding modes power modes color dash, and of course mt09, xsr900 same engine as mt09, shiver 900, Ducati 821, Suzuki gsxs750, Honda cb650r
Is this bike good for beginners? thanks
Adam has the best job I know of.
What did he mean at the end that there was no question about Monster 821 vs. this bike? I'm assuming Monster all the way since it is so much more expensive, adjustable suspension etc. but just double checking!
Owning the monster and planning on getting the BMW this year i can tell you they're both great. The monster will always hold a special place for me since my first bike was a 696 but honestly you can't go wrong with either. Monster will run you 3k more but imo its worth it
Nice review....
But why some people say its lack of engine excitement.. what can you say about that?
probably compared to an mt09. its front wheel is allergic to roads
so nice
It doesn’t look like 465 lbs did they fill the frame with lead?
yal need a mc commute playlist
jk i found it
i Dont like the handlebar color/looks put a black mx style bars on it and rise it 2cm or 3 something. nice riding Adam !
nice bike tho
Adam, I can't wait for the commute with the new ducati streetfighter V4S and please mention your body height to let us have an idea of the comfort with the impressions you will have riding it. Thanks !
He usually mentions he's about 6 feet.
@@spencehutchinson1904 thanks mate
Im still waiting for the R9T refresh with TFT display and
LED headlight
Sly Carl i dont think that bmw will release a nineT with TFT and Full LED headlight, it wont be as puristic as the nineT is supposed to be :)
Never gonna happen.
And then it does
BMW F900R vs DUCATI MONSTER vs KTM Duke 890. Same spec, same price tag... Looks are subjective but which bike is best? Thoughts??
I'm not too familiar with BMW bikes. Are routine maintenance parts overpriced? brakes for example?
I hate the trend of smaller gas tanks myself... So over that...
Yeah bikes few years back had much better capacity, now you're forced to fill up every couple of days unless you buy an adventure bike
Indeed. I want to simply make atleast 300km on a tank. It influenced my choice to choose and adv bike with a larger capacity tank.
@@bikersquest Probably due to some EU regulation.
I’ve never been a fan of the bmw parallel twin. I remember choosing triumphs triple over the f800gs. This doesn’t sound much better. I found the engine boring. Maybe this is different.
Why did you delete the yzf r1m 2020 video
Would you rather have this or the MT-09/10? and why?
Thanks
For me I just liked the way the BMW felt, the MT are great bikes but here in Cali the insurance on them is much higher than the BMW.
I know different bikes, but I am looking for a street bike with cruise control (I already have a Panigale V2) and I am between this BMW F900R an Indian FTR 1200...any thoughts from anybody?
The main man
Great video. What gloves were you wearing in this video?
Hi Jacob, thank you for the note and for watching. Please review the article (URL inside desciption). There you will find informaiton on the gloves that Adam was wearing in this review.
This is a cool bike.
As to the Monster "not even close" means... the Monster is better?
Did you use the brake for that wheelie
Can you recommend a bike over 600cc that has a better fuel economy than the f900R ?
Honda NC750X
This has gear shift assist pro right?? That means you never have to use the clutch?
Available as an option, yes.
Don't you mean "540" instead of "450" degree firing order?
Nice bike, is it really that loud, or did you place a microphone in the pipe?
Also, it would look much better with the chin spoiler, but that's JMO.
450° is 360° + 90° That is the other side of 270° 270°+450° =720 2x revolutions
Amazing looking bike. Wish they had dealers closer to me. But dats a heavy bih
Hi, nice review by the way... I was curious as to what city were you mostly filming in for this video?
Santa Barbara.
@@user-sw2lv3zp6o ohh ok, I wasn't quite sure. At first I kinda thought Florida until I really paid attention but I lived in San Diego for 4 1/2 years while in the military....
Lane splitting legal in CA
Looks like the LA area because I saw a Interstate 405 sign.
68' HeavyChevyRida thats Orange County
is this standard or low suspension
What in the world is that tail?
6:39 My man! Running red lights in pursuit of the perfect commute review!
Now that the BMW launch this bike I don't know which one to buy :( BMW F900R or Honda CB650R . Which one would you recommend, and why ? I need help asp :))
See if you can test drive both 😁 then decide, tons of options on the bmw., Including an IMU for lean abs and tc...
Go with the Honda I really like the BMW it's a great looking bike but so is the Honda and the Honda will be cheaper and easier to preform maintenance on and get parts for.
Drive by Wire: An when people say “what do you ride?” You’ve immediately got a problem - look up the “Class Sketch” with John Cleese, Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett.
I look down on Hondas, but he looks up to BMWs...... you’ll know what I mean.
Honda 650r
I gotta say that it would be a great bike for the price if they opted to give you all the "accessories" as standard pieces, as it sits it's another naked bike in the lot with no clear advantage over the others. If it cut 30+ pounds off and gained an extra 10hp and 5 ft lbs of torque plus all the accessorized pieces as standard operating equipment this would beat out the likes of KTM, Triumph, Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, and Kawasaki in one fell swoop like they did with the S1000RR years ago.
Nice review & a very interesting bike. Just a bit unsure of how much it might end up costing once you add all the good extras. BMW are naughty like that. A 9k bike actually ends up costing 10 or 11K+ when you want a reasonable spec.
You get an extra year warranty compared to non European (ktm Aprilia Ducati etc) bikes
@@rayb5394 Yes very true. I think off hand only BMW & Suzuki do 3 a year unlimited mileage warranty.
12k nicely equipped and 3 year 36K warranty.
Is this bike faster than a MT-07, or comparable? I see the top speed is around the same
I had both F800R and MT-07. The MT-07 is just a great motor and good looking bike, but is too a near dangerous bike, as if it wasn't well ballanced project. Not even close. F800R rides much better and faster than MT-07. Much. In a bumping corner near my city, you just can't go over 160Km/h with the MT-07 cause it starts swinging the handle bar, and you have to close the gas to fix it. Meanwhile in the same situation the F800R could be at 185 or even more, rock solid at turns! All told, 0-10, MT-07 is a 7 out of 10, and mainly for the awesome engine, wich makes 10 out of 10. While F800R makes 9 out of 10 - in every aspect but the controversial design, wich was fine for me.
Is the engine better than Yamaha’s triple on the MT-09?
no.. for sure
Sweet
I have bmw car and I have to say that I don't want to see any service warnings when starting my bike or any warning lights when riding.
Definitely want to see a detailed comparison with the 790 duke!
He said Duke is not the bike for him
He said Duke is not the bike for him
How is it compared with the mt09/sp?
We don't get the sp in usa
I've seen this bike at the dealership, looks good, but not great. I have also seen the Duke 790, which looks way better and I know has more power and less weigh. Probably the BMW is more reliable and more comfortable. Funny thing, the base F900R is more expensive here in Mexico than even the 890R (haven't seen it yet) and pretty close to price with the Street Triple RS 2020. If I were to buy a naked it would be either the Duke 890R or the Street Triple, maybe even also the 790 since it's pretty cheap here.
Alexander Sinco I changed from a 2019 street triple to 790 Duke and am so happy with the KTM. Way more agile at lower speeds which suits my riding on tight twisties.
Looks are subjective. I personally prefer the more subtle styling of the BMW over the edgy transformer like Duke. I’d rather ride the Duke though, in 790 or 890 trim
So... Monster 821 or f900r ? Thanks
He answered that exact question at the end of the review. He said without a doubt, it's not even close, the F 900 R. Not sure why he feels so strongly about that, but he loves this bike.
Z900, MT-09. Value leaders.
the monster is one UGLY bike tbh.
Duke 890R. Strongest lightest twin with the best tech for the best price.
@@JinKazama92 Subjective. I love the way the Monster looks and I'm not alone.
That road is never going to be finished
11:40 - Try 2016 re: ABS in EU.
ktm 890 competitor?
How would you compare it to the shiver 900?
BMW 20 lbs less weight, shiver 9 no IMU option, I don't think shiver 9 has a slipper clutch, BMW new kid on the block revised bike head to toe, shiver 9 a few years hasn't been revised
@@rayb5394 I know the specs was looking for on bike difference.
@@olivejuice1012 hey just incase you are looking at a shiver they are great bikes I used to own a shiver 750 and it was amazing but there is one big downside you must make sure you have another bike and have a dealer close by I say you need another bike cause if you need parts and they don't have them in the states you will be waiting a month from Italy that is ultimately why I had to partway with my shiver
@@aaronslack4421 I have a shiver 750 and haven't had to wait more than a week maybe two for parts and do my own maintenance. I keep some parts in stock at the house. That being said i do have another bike but im usually on the shiver and its been very good to me.
Good looking bike, but sure sounds wimpy. After market exhaust I'm sure could fix that
I timed your 0-60mph launch from the traffic light starting at 6:56 and you got about 3.8-3.9 seconds including roll out obviously. I'm sure the bike (and rider) could achieve something in the low 3s or high 2s though.
