    As a new player, I'm really enjoying this video series. Thanks so much for your clear explanations of what you're doing. One problem I have... I was following along very well until you slapped down this giant blueprint out of nowhere and my brain exploded. Is there a video where you go through this "mall" blueprint in detail?

    • @KatherineOfSky
      @KatherineOfSky  Před 3 lety +2

      I talk about it as I go through the series. THe Mall isn't necessary, but people always request it. It makes all the buildings for the factory. Otherwise, you can make small assembly lines for the items needed.

    At minute 42:20 Katherine says she wants to make 2 red sciences per second which for you would need at least 13.4 or 14 machines. Only placing 10 of them yields in 1.5 per second, which are 90 per minute.

    • @KatherineOfSky
      @KatherineOfSky  Před rokem

      When you play Factorio you simplify the math... and right now the speed of the assembly machines doesn't matter because they get upgraded. The only thing that matters is that they are all the same. So eventually we will get blue machines that craft at 1.25 speed... and I still call it "1 per second" because it simplifies the mental math. You will see that the research flies by, and we don't need more than what I have built.

    I always love love love your Factorio Megabase series! Did you know that if you drag power poles over ghost power polls, they will only be placed on the ghosts? It only works for power poles (and I think only if you start the click on the ghost), but it's such a quality of life improvement! It makes building blue prints much easier, because if you start out with the power poles many other things just fall in place.

    @menedian Před 3 lety +2

    My 2 cents on fighting biters early game:
    1) When turret creeping, as KoS pointed out, you run out of ammo FAST if you drop half-stacks or full stacks of ammo on your turrets. Personally that's why I instead use Z to drop 1-10 packs of ammo on the turrets right as I place them instead.
    2) I dunno about you guys but I really hate how the game prioritizes putting the ammo you pick up from disassembling turrets into your ammo belt instead of your inventory. Just for this reason I'll usually use the shotgun instead of the SMG as my early game weapon of choice. That way me and my turrets use different ammo types so there's no chance of them getting mixed up. To avoid my character picking up regular ammo into their ammo belt I'll also drop the pistol on the ground the second I get my shotgun.
    3) Regarding the shotgun: One annoying "feature" it has is being able to blind fire, which can end up damaging your precious structures if you accidentally press spacebar while working. To avoid this, I actually place two shotguns on my weapon belt, but keep only one of them loaded with ammo. Whenever I'm not fighting I'll just pick up the ammo from my currently "active" shotgun and drop it on the inactive one. This way I can run around with an unloaded shotgun and the moment I actually need to shoot something I can just press TAB to equip the loaded one.
    EDIT:
    4) Oh also I set up my shortcuts so I can change the active shortcut bar with shift+mouse wheel. This way I can easily switch from having shortcut bar #1 as my main to having bar #0. Since bar #0 is usually hidden yet easily accessed, I use it as my combat bar, placing in particular my turrets, ammo and repair packs on slots 1 2 and 3. This way I can easily use them during combat without having to click. This makes turret creeping a lot easier as I can just go: 1] Press 1 to make turrets the active item. 2] Click to place turret on the ground. 3] Without moving the mouse, press 2 to make ammo the active item. 4] Press Z a couple of times to quickly drop some ammo on the turret. And since my mouse cursor is on the turret this whole time, I can easily switch to my repair packs and repair it, or right click it to disassemble it, or drop more ammo on it, etc.

    20:41 - Unfortunately, the description for Nano Explosives in a misnomer. It doesn't give nano bots the ability to replace cliff explosives, it allows them to use cliff explosives, much like normal bots. You need to have cliff explosives actually in your inventory for this ability to be used. There is talk on the Nanobots mod page to either change this ability to either require an entire full capsule, or to just fix the description to better explain how it actually works. The comments go both ways, so maybe it'll be a config option which way it goes.

    there's another factor in the biter evolution, certain military techs will trigger upgrades to the enemies as well.
    for example (ime, i may be way off) weapon damage research will buff worm damage, and shooting speed will affect the types of biters that can spawn. the overall military tech levels will buff their spawn rate and toughness

    Don't worry about nanobot explosives, they were rebalanced and require actual explosives to work, by themselves all they do is allow nanobots to use blue explosives.

      While I tend to agree, some blueprints at the start can be useful to ease the very steep learning curve required by factorio. Seeing how others have built power plants etc can be very useful.

      The game provides you with the backdrop for design: you don't need paper. Just place things, built belts, see where you can move things around. (If the biters are too much, start a game on Peaceful, or no biters). Use the factorio calculators to see machine ratios, and work from those numbers (if you want to optimize)

    I'm thankful for these videos as I'm about 3-4 days old to the game... the biters got too hardy for me to push back and my base finally got up graded to electric smelting 4 is plenty for cooper and I got like 16 iron has fluctuating needs. Big issues came from getting blue (research) bottles and doing anything with oil. I toggle different needs with plastic and sulfate. Just started blue chip and some battery (chem factory) building. Very limited. And occasional power issues ... solar panels don't do enough... well looking for advice..

    • @KatherineOfSky
      @KatherineOfSky  Před 3 lety

      With solar panels, you need MASSES of them... like huge tracts of land devoted to them. Steam power is much better if you have a limited land area.

    Agree with you about making your own stuff, I'm quite new in the game (about 100 hours), it took me around 60 hours to finish my first run without watching a single tutorial, and of course my base was a completly mess, I miss a lot of stuff like using blueprints, nuclear power, train networks, main bus, mall, etc.
    On my second run I incorporated more stuff, still without tutorials, and now on my 3rd run I'm just beginning to watch gameeplays and tutorials, but I don't think I'll use any mod yet.

I couldn't get anything with oil working no trains running, 3 biters nests killed me over 7 times and they are getting so nasty I built 6 + turret for structure with gate together close enough to attack the nests. When 5 or more spitting worms turrets have slow and melt your face off spit.... and I blew some 3k rounds of assorted standard and AP rounds .. and they still destroy 3 other turrets even with me repairing.... I don't know how people deal with them... they're just getting bigger and more obnoxious...

    When adding ammo to turrets you can hotkey the ammo and use z to drop individual pieces onto the turret, about 5 key presses quickly might be easier than getting a mod or another method. Specifically for turret creeping you only need 5-10 ammo per turret I think.

    • @KatherineOfSky
      @KatherineOfSky  Před 3 lety

      Five demo pieces is definitely not enough. I also don't wanna have that many key presses; I feel like a right click is a much better option

    I know this is a somewhat dated video at this point, but possibly worth pointing out anyway to new players - evolution has nothing to do with how much pollution gets into biter bases (24 mins-ish). The pollution element is how much is produced, regardless of whether it ever reaches biters or not.

  • @canebro1
    @canebro1 Před 3 lety

    9:00 It seems like those right hand miners should just drop on the right side of the belt, rather than splittering together.
    But my favorite biter combat is combat bots. It does require military science, but even if you handcraft the 100 needed, it is essentially like carrying out 5 extra SMGs with AP ammo, more with more follower bot research.
    Edit: but in early game (before military science), I find SMG + grenades more fun that turret creep, though I do like a few turrets i can retreat to.

    • @Thalanox
      @Thalanox Před 3 lety

      What I tend to do is set up a strong point with turrets as close to the nest as I think I can get without aggroing them. I use 2-4 turrets and place 15 or so mags in them. Then I bait the existing mob into the kill zone to wipe them out and head right back to wipe out the smaller mob that just respawned. Shooting the close ones with the SMG while tossing grenades at the stationary targets feels pretty nice. I don't like the slowdown from the spitter acid, though. The game's combat feels like you're either mopping the floor with the monsters, or you get stuck on something you can't see in the chaos and end up shredded in half a second. There isn't much of a sweet spot.

    Boxes. You need several buffer boxes in a belt line (with inserters) to take up the excess product. At the moment you're running backwards and forwards collecting a few metal plates and watching production stop when you should be emptying the line and storing the plates in boxes for easy collection later. I've been interested in your methodical approach but also a *little* bit vexed you're not buffering your production lines with boxes (and boxes and boxes).

    • @KatherineOfSky
      @KatherineOfSky  Před 3 lety +1

      You must be new to the game. Buffering is NOT a recommended strategy since buffers just delay knowledge of a shortfall. If you weren't aware, furnaces hold a full stack of product, so they act as chests. Watch the way I play and just see the "scarcity" that happens ... ( _or doesn't_ )

    this is such next level stuff. how did you even come up with this stuff in the beginning?

  • @Griexxt
    @Griexxt Před 3 lety

    I think the major problem with daisy-chaining labs early in the game is the inserter's insistence on trying to maintain a level of 2 science packs in the labs. This can mean that science labs are left empty at the beginning of the chain while there are unused packs sitting at the end of the chain. It's not a huge problem, but early on it slows research down a bit.

  • @0623kaboom
    @0623kaboom Před 3 lety

    a suggestion for your build ... yes build a copper smelt line above the copper ... and run the stuff to the bus BUT dont expand this portion here ... use this as a starter base ... even the power setup stop it there ... use this power setup to power the main bus fed resources and manufacture ... then if there Seperate power system fails the first one will jump start their power feeders BUT you still get your basic builds and some basic ore ... that way you can expand proper base properly instead of trying to squeeze and shoe horn it into a space smaller than it needs

    Katherine, I wonder if you would consider doing a 100% completion run, where you play on the hardest difficulty and get all achievements that are possible in the game (unless for example there are two that colide, such as, the lazy one where you don’t craft in inventory vs one where you must craft x amount in inventory, in that situation you go for the one that is the hardest)

    • @KatherineOfSky
      @KatherineOfSky  Před 3 lety

      I will not do that kind of run. To get the early train achievement while going for the 8hour achieve requires serious speedrunning tactics and hundreds of hours of practice. There are some people on Twitch you can watch if you are interested.
