You got research, demos, reactions, cool video edits and playing too! Well done. PLUS, it takes me SO much time to write out Vinnie's stickwork I HUGELY appreciate you sharing transcriptions. Off to the shed I go.
Nice that you were being a mensch and giving credit to Scott’s Bass Lessons . I like it so much I actually joined. Killer video and analysis ...Top job.
The Allan Holdsworth 'Secrets' album. I have all the others too! The Baked Potato 1 and 2 is AWESOME!!!! Fantastic job by the way. Makes me realize.... I need to get back into reading and put my chops to good use besides improvising.... I'm enjoying your videos and being introduced to some modern jazz drummers I don't know who aren't Nate Smith and Marcus Gilmore... ✌
That version of Vinnie playing ‘You gotta try’ is one of my all time favourite Vinnie performances. The sound, his power and feel, everything about it is killer. Another great version on the album Basie and Beyond, again with Vinnie on the kit.
Thanks for the video & the transcriptions. They are indeed awesome. Another aspect of Vinnie's playing is the solid groove work he has done with other artists. My personal favorite, is his work with Jennifer Warnes on Famous Blue Raincoat & The Hunter. His playing on those albums is salted with some tasty 2-beat fills that fit perfectly with the music, while also sounding somewhat unexpected through his orchestration on the set.
Check out his playing on the album called "Nghtwalker" by Gino Vannelli. I believe it was recorded in 1981. He used Jeff Picaros drums on the session because he had his drum set in another studio recording another album at the same. Not too many people are hip to this album by Gino with Vinnie playing drums. If your a Vinnie fan do yourself a favor and check it out
having watched so many instructional/transcription videos for various instruments, I really appreciate how efficient this video is....you play the original clip, then play along with it once at speed, and then play through it once slower. what some channels do (maybe it's helpful for some), that is so hard to watch (maybe this is more a problem on guitar videos) is where they play one note at a time and stop to tell you what every. single. note. is... as they go along, and it's sooooo slow and drawn out that the videos end up being like 25 minutes long. I like your teaching style much better ! thanks very much, off to go practice this now !
Anyone looking for an awesome Vinnie record to check out, I highly recommend Jeff Babko's "Mondo Trio". I just discovered it a few years ago and it's become one of my favourites.
Yes plus 1 on that! Another one worth checking out is JK Kleutgens “Cavemen” album. Lots of great Vinnie moments on that album. But for me my favorites would be the 1st 3 John patitucci albums, specially the track “Spaceships” on the Sketchbook album, and of course Eric Marienthal’s Crossroads album. Cheers!
I freakin love your videos. You just might me the most unpretentious drummer I have ever watched. I was a hot mess with jazz... I had a FANTASTIC teacher, but he was unable to get me clued in for whatever reason. Had I had a resource like yours when I was a kid in the 80's learning my craft, I think I might be in a very different place with drumming today...
You want one of the best Vinnie recordings ever.........Buell Neidlinger Quartet, Big Drum. Live album with maybe 50 people in the audience. Vinnie's playing is inspired as are the tunes. Loosey goosey but with a framework. I asked VC about it and he said there was minimal rehearsing and minimal microphone usage. It's a fabulous recording!!
Working out Vinnie & Weckl licks is infectious, I've spent my whole life doing this, but there does and will come a time where it's you, yourself, your sound & vocab that needs the attention, after all there is only 1 Vinnie, 1 Weckl. However, taking the time to listen, transcribe & program is extremely beneficial in the learning process. I have many clinics bootlegs of Vinnie performing the Bruce Lee track, it's almost as if the track was written for one of Bruce Lee's fight scenes, the two would compliment one another perfectly. I also have all the Baked Potato Gigs, in fact I'm so close to owning everything Vinnie & Weckl have ever performed on starting way way back in the 70's, then just as I think I have it all another recording pops up, I love it. I have to say 80/20, choosing Vinnie as a Master to study, you cannot go wrong. Kind Regards.
Awesome work, as usual. I´ve always found insane Vinnie´s playing on Seven Days, in that studio video, on Sting´s house. The only part where he plays differently from the record. ("Seven days, will quickly go...") Perhaps, on a second review, you could explain that. Great channel, man,
I took a few lessons with Bonnie I’m warren cuccurullo,s li😅tyke drummer boy brother!! Loving your playing very much❤️we should chat got some stuff to show you!! Happy new year my friends ❤ peacefully and Jerry cuccurullo drum Speak 🗣
Heh, I'm a major Vinnie fan but 2 of these I hadn't heard yet. Absolutely killer stuff, thanks for the explanation - I'll have something to practice for a while 😁 Another underrated Vinnie fill that I also didn't see mentioned here is in Nik Kershaw's Don't Ask Me (at 3:14). It's the most off-kilter fill I've ever heard in a mainstream recording, and yet it still propels the song forward. Genius stuff.
Great vid. Interesting in the last lick how you play R rrll R rrll like a paradiddle diddle without the second note as opposed to 5 strokes in the "normal" way. Be nice to hear you talk about why to pick which stickings, if you're interested - if it sounds good, it is good after all. :)
Dude, as a regular I feel I am entitled to sharing my opinion. So you’ve got a lot going for you may I suggested you drop the “whaaat” and the flashback humor. Keep doing what you do best. Sharing your intelligence and the vast knowledge of the craft.
Good one! Thanks and Happy New Year. Tho I am primarily a bass and guitar player I have a nice Sonor fusion kit that I get inspired to play when seeing your vids!
Just realized that's a thing. Ok - in the future I won't use squarespace to host the "non list sub" downloads. I've been reading support articles for 25 minutes and realized they don't have an option to remove this field even when products are free. Asinine. Thanks for letting me know.
One of my favorite Vinnie tracks is Against the Clock by Alan Holdsworth. Definitely check out his solo just after the 3 minute mark if you haven't done that one already.
Hey man, I think you've done a fantastic job transcribing Vinnie's performances and playing them back. However, I feel I need to point some things out here. I think you missed out on several opportunities here. First of all, those are not "licks". I can bet you a million bucks that Vinnie didn't spend hours coming up those particular phrases to then look for a place to show them off. He likely wouldn't recall what he played if you were to ask him straight after the performance. "Who cares?" he would tell you. He came up with them on the spot, and they could have been a million other phrases he could have played, and they would have sounded just as great. As is usually the case, it is not about WHAT is played, but WHY it is played. I've heard Vinnie play just an extra kick drum note or a lonely splash cymbal to a significant effect. Nothing technically impressive, but so musically effective. It is all about the context and WHY it is played at a particular spot. You could have first looked at and explained what made those phrases sound impressive to you. What was going on musically around him and just before he played them? Was there something unusual about them, like a polyrhythm or particular note grouping that sounded awesome when played against the current time signature and the musical backdrop? Where in the songs was he and why did he play them? What effect does it have on a listener? What subdivisions was he playing? Do they match the feel of the songs or go against them? To what effect? Then you could have looked at the technical side of things and what techniques one has to develop in order not just to play such phrases, but to come up with their own, right on the spot. Particular rudiments? Hand to foot co-ordination? Accenting off beats? Just blindly transcribing, playing, or spending hours pulling off a transcribed phrase in a vacuum that someone came up with on the spot teaches nothing without analyzing the context. Perhaps do a part 2 video of those same phrases addressing those points. There is a treasure trove of valuable information that could be extracted from those examples, but there were overlooked entirely. Be well, stay safe. Respect!
You should have included the intro lick to the Allan Holdsworth song "Spokes". That lick sound like he has 3 arms the way he moves it around the kit. And it's not even difficult, it's just phrased differently and moved all over the kit that's confusing.
Vinnie's solo album is great! He's a monster drummer obviously, but the compositions are quite good IMO making it enjoyable for a non-drummer like myself to enjoy.
You may even know him from Megadeth, The System has failed, though don’t expect anything like the quality here just highlighting his amazing range. That mini solo, tasty is the only word for it and handy having a younger man vid to fall back on 😁. I don’t often like to congratulate the host but that was tasty 😁. Vinnie C is a bit special.
Wait! Did I miss the episode where you talk about why you only play broken cymbals? BTW, I noticed you play a lot more relaxed now than from your flashback era.
This is great! There are so many but 2 other licks I love from Vinnie are in this live version of Seven Days. The 1st I use all the time and is at 4:03-4:06. The 2nd is badass at 4:16-4:21...both in this video: czcams.com/video/tBgyKoWPC5Q/video.html
Thanks for the mention - that was a hell of a show at the BP. Great job on the video and congrats on the channel doing so well!
Thanks steve!
STEVE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was a killer video, more like this please. Some Elvin, Marcus, Tyshawn, Mason G or JD would be amazing
People don't mention enough your own playing, which is super. You've got great feel and a lovely economy of movement. Nice stuff. 👍
Was just thinking this. Salute Mr. Twenty!
When Nate says "Let me play that slowly. "🤣😂🤣
I'm hanging on by the tail even at that reduced speed!
Great work as always.
Vinnie is also awesome when he played in The Five Peace Band.
The Allan Holdsworth 'Secrets' album. I have all the others too! The Baked Potato 1 and 2 is AWESOME!!!! Fantastic job by the way. Makes me realize.... Great video. Whenever I watch Vinnie I have a lot of those “WHAT IN THE WORLD!”moments.
Love your playing and teaching! Great video!
Turned on to Vinnie on Joe’s Garage. Good times! Keep it up brother! Peace and Love
great drumming 80/20 Drummer # would be an excellent teacher # great playing # wish I could transcribe all that fast stuff like you #

Love your practice room cymbals...most people would use them as wall hangers!!

Thanks for the expert analysis and deconstruction of these brilliant Vinnie licks. I'm sure you could fill your channel with hundreds more.

Love that vintage sound with your frosted heads. Very very nice.
Hey Nate. Your insightful analysis and breakdowns of top drummers styles and licks are the best. Appreciate you, brother. Have a great day.

Don't forget, he also recorded for Megadeth on "The System Has Failed".
Becoming the best drummer Megadeth ever had!
@@kr3gor That would be almighty Gar Samuelson
@@panpajak3475 Fair. His playing is out of this world on Killing.
Yeah he also recorded on Queen Of The Damned soundtrack
I still believe the most underrated Vinnie Colaiuta moment is punching Sting for being a douche.
Awesome work, as usual. I´ve always found insane Vinnie´s playing on Seven Days, in that studio video, on Sting´s house. The only part where he plays differently from the record. ("Seven days, will quickly go...") Perhaps, on a second review, you could explain that.

I just added like number 1000 😀 great video. One day I'd like to be able to transcribe like that.

You’re videos are getting better dude, keep the jazz / fusion going

Thank you, Nate - superb as always.
Thanks for transcribe it👏👏
Excellent as always. Appreciate the work you put into your videos!
Thank you. Vinnie is a huge influence on me. Well done, you rock.

As a regular, I like Nates humorous touches myself.
Thank you teacher!
Dude thank you for the transcription
So far beyond my extremely limited ability on the drums that it’s like a gnat dreaming of becoming a hawk.
Thanks for reminding me of how much I suck.
Good one! Thanks and Happy New Year. Tho I am primarily a bass and guitar player I have a nice Sonor fusion kit that I get inspired to play when seeing your vids!
Great work!! U should do more of this, especially helpful coz it demonstrates how to put technical stick work in a tune. Interesting cymbals
Thank you 80/20. Im a true believer of VC.
Love the channel, long-time subscriber; I'd love to download the transcripts without giving my payment info!

Loved this video, thanks for giving us the opportunity to pretend that we can play like Vinnie over a few bars.🤣
One of my favorite Vinnie tracks is Against the Clock by Alan Holdsworth. Definitely check out his solo just after the 3 minute mark if you haven't done that one already.

I just realized that Danny Carey’s iconic intro to Sober was a Vinnie Colaiuta lick.

Vinny say no more !!!!
Are you the one who broke all of those cymbals or did you buy them in this condition?
They actually cost more
Thanks 🙏
BRILLIANT!!!!!
That second one sounds like an Adam Gray solo!
Amazing OMG stankface at 4:30 LOL
Wait! Did I miss the episode where you talk about why you only play broken cymbals?
BTW, I noticed you play a lot more relaxed now than from your flashback era.
That’s the TOP content 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
What a great content!
Awesome!!
Very nice
👍🙂 Nice, brah!!! 🙂

I hate to be that guy, but his name is "ColAIUta", not ColAUIta.
This is one of the slickest Vinnie fills I know of. Jing Chi - Train Song:

Vinnie's beats in that song are crazy too!
