How does being American have anything to do with watching or talking about the sport? In the US football, basketball, and even baseball give you a lot more chances to go pro and make a living from it, that's the main reason these sports are bigger and more popular in the states. And the US has one of the best women's soccer teams in the world but you are just going to act like that doest matter?

i would say playstylewise messi is Lebron (allrounder) and ronaldo is mj/kobe (incredible scorer, VOLUMEshooter and mentally a little tougher). From a mental pov messi had it way easier (like LeBron until the move to Miami). The media loved him from the start. A teamplayer, humble, introverted, while ronaldo has been critisized for his looks and modelads, extrovertet behaviour, self-esteem which edges on narcisism and just has never been very popular with the media ( maybe comparable to kobe, who was a bit more distant and cold).

Besides, soccer works 100% different from any other sports that Americans like, draft, for example, would never work while you have players on other countries starting as kids in the pros.

In the 1990s and early 2000s although it was really the Ronaldo v Zidane show because their teams went to four straight finals from 1994-2006 in the WC and in 1998 they played against each other. But you had other great teams which performed well in other tournaments like Germany in Euros 1996 with Jurgen Klinsmann, Juergen Kohler and Thomas Hassler and later had Ballack, Klose, Ozil, Thomas Mueller etc and then France had Henry, Deschamps, Desailly etc Italy had its legendary squad of Cannavaro, Maldini, Nesta, Totti and Del Piero and then Pirlo, Netherlands had a great squad from 1994-2010 with first Edgar Davids, Dennis Begkamp to Ruud Van Nistelroooy Arjen Robben, Van Persie and Wesley Sneijder and then Spain had its run from 2008-2012 and Portugal had its Golden Generation with FIgo, Rui Costa, Pauleta, Nuno Gomes, Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco and thats also discounting Brazil had Ronaldo, Cafu, Romario, RIvaldo, Ronaldinho, Roberto Carlos, Kaka etc from 1994-2006 and Argentina had a good squad from 1994-2006.

^ Oh look, I found another Idiot, who started watching football 2 years ago, and thinks he can judge player's whole career on how and which position he played, when he was over 30 years old and had to adapt to losing his accelaration because of age. When Messi starts to age, he'll move to center just as CR7, only Leo is better passer than shooter, so he'll play deeper, in the midfield. Meanwhile CR7 is better scorer, so he plays as a striker. Judging CR7's whole career on how he plays as a striker, and saying he's just a goalscorer and not a dribbler or passer is like judging Philip Lahm's career for how he played when Pep moved him to center midfield, and saying he's just a slow passer and not a sprinter/crosser.

I think this is the first time the pressure is on Germany to perform and win really since they went to three straight finals in 1982,86 and 1990 and were heavy favorites in 1994. The only challengers I see to them, if those teams play to their potential are, Spain and France with their depth as well, Brazil really need to show they are over their 2014 disappointment and if Messi and Argentina click well. But for Messi and CR7 to cement their legacy and say they are better than what Pele, Maradona, Zidane and Brazilian Ronaldo did, this is it for them.

Messi vs Maradona is the LeBron vs MJ in soccer. Cristiano Ronaldo (because Ronaldo is someone else who was also a great player) is a great goalscorer but pretty average in other aspects of the game. Messi has the ability to create things on his own, C.R. is more dependent on having a great team built around him to succeed.

you can't compare Pele and Messi because the game has change drastically in the past 40-50 years. If Messi and Ronaldo in their prime would have played back in the 60s and 70s they would've been even more dominant.

I’m a Messi fan, but Ronaldo TBH has literally insane goals I have ever seen. I have not seen a bicycle kick for Messi, but Ronaldo has done at least 3 times. Messi in my opinion is my favorite though, but it’s a pain to watch these sports analysts, “Americans “ try to talk about soccer. Same thing happened on first things first.

I think a more appropriate analogy is that Messi is MJ in the early 90s when he’s trying to get to that GOAT tier that Magic and Bird and Kareem where at during that time. Cristiano is maybe Melo, so much marketing and stat stuffing, but if he’s not scoring he’s useless. Argentina are like OKC, got huge names but just can’t seem to win it all.

It’s not like scoring 70 goals in a playoff because a playoff team is normally talented and dedicated and actually good, he scored a hat trick vs a team that isn’t good at all!
