thats what i dont like about this list..you could and should absolutely make a case for Gretzky. He has only played 2 seasons in the past 20 years, but Bonds hasnt been around in the last dozen years and Tiger has been awful for the last decade. If you make a 1988-2008 list then Bonds, Tiger and Gretzky should all be on the list. I'm sorry, if you havent been relevant for half of the years, you shouldnt be on here. Bonds would be #1 if it were dominance from 00-04, but how much clout do you have when you were dominant for 1/4 of the years its talking about? When i think 98-2018 (in no particular order) I think Brady(2000-present), Lebron(03-present), Phelps(00-present), Serena(02-present), Federer(03-present). Those 5, for me, are the ones i think about for the better part of 2 decades. 20 years of "dominance" is such a long stretch. should really be a decade by decade thing

Ronaldo is a pure goal scorer, that's it. He can't do anything else, and Messi is still a better goal scorer. Messi isn't just the best goal scorer, he's the best playmaker, dribbler, assister, passer, most intelligent, he doesn't cheat or dive, he doesn't show frustration, and most importantly he's humble. He doesn't brag about himself, he isn't full of himself, unlike many great athletes. Messi is without a doubt better then Ronaldo.

To be fair, the reason Bolt and Phelps are able to be claim GOAT status in their respective sports so definitively is because their sports are races and are entirely based on timed scores. You can simply look at their times and see that they are faster than the times of everyone in history, proving them to be the fastest (and therefore best). With Floyd, we can never know definitively whether or not he would beat, say, Muhammad Ali if they both fought in their primes, because unlike swimming and sprinting, you can't simply compare their times. Additionally, they were in different weight classes, so it's even harder to evaluate them based on their physical tools when they were fighting against different competition (we use the term "pound-for-pound", but even then, it's difficult to evaluate). Floyd completely and utterly dominated all of the competition he could have possibly been faced with throughout his career, and although we can always speculate about the legends of the past, Floyd had basically the closest thing to a perfect professional sports career that is humanly possible. In my personal opinion, it's hard to evaluate the dominance of any of these three against one another, simply because they each had such long stretches during which nobody could possibly beat them whatsoever. He went with Floyd because he continued to win after ascending from his prime and gracefully eased into retirement without ever losing, which Phelps and Bolt did not, which is valid. You can make a case for any of them though

sds606 Serena has been more dominant within women's tennis than Fed has been within men's tennis. Plus she has more slams, more Olympic golds, more French Open wins and has dominated both singles AND doubles tennis whereas Fed barely plays doubles. Not to mention Serena has won slams from 17 through her mid 30s whereas Fed didn't win his first slam until 21 (and Serena is about 2 months younger). I love both Serena and Fed but Serena has a better case for dominance.

sds606 you’re ignoring doubles. Serena has 3 gold medals and 16 doubles slams. Colin included that and that’s why helped her get in front of Roger.
This is about dominance and not level of competition. If not For Serena Venus would have 14+ slams. Sharapova would probably have around 8+. Serena doesn’t have a top rival like Nadal or Novak because every time one with the potential to be great came along she usually quickly proved she was better.

If not for Nadal, the second greatest player of all time, and undeniably the greatest on Clay (only lost a grand total of 2 times at the French Open in 13 years), Federer may have close to 30 slams, and that’s a conservative estimate.
By the way, Federer has been at the top of grand slams that have a best of five instead of a best of three. Meaning that Men’s matches could last up to five and half hours, whereas Women’s matches are not even half of that amount.
Clearly, the Men’s tour is far more demanding, and Federer has stayed at the top for the past 15 years.

When he talked about Messi clearly someone wrote that for him. Americans don´t know soccer, why they talk about it. The best competion in Soccer is the UCL not La Liga. Also in La Liga he talks about Messi goal/game but CR7 has a better Goal/Game in La Liga. He could have pick Messi, that´s ok, but the arguments we used were so weak, because he don´t follow soccer.

Disclaimer: *I'm a HUGE Federer Fan - I think he's the greatest athlete ever*
I started watching tennis in 2002. I was six when Federer came around and I instantly became a fan. I rolled with Federer through all his high years and all his lows (2013...*shudder*). During that stretch, Federer won almost everything there was to be won. There was a period of time that I started to think if Federer didn't at least win 3 slams in a year, it was a down year for him. Then Djokovic took over in 2011 (a lot of that had to do with Fed's age - he couldn't dominate the way he used to because of the age factor, which is why he changed his game recently ever so slightly and started to dominate again- but nonetheless, Djokovic dominated. From 2011-2016 Djokovic went from 1 GS to 12GS (11 won). In 2003-2008, Federer went from 0GS to 13GS (13 won). During Djokovic's dominant time, he won about as many Masters 1000s as Fed did (granted, Federer played a lot of best of 5's that Novak didn't). To me, this is an actively comparable stretch of dominance. Just like Federer had his peak where I felt he would never lose, Djokovic had the same thing.

Yes, Djokovic from 2011-2016 was by far the best player in the world.
Nadal’s never been able to solely dominate an era like Djokovic or Federer.
Yes, Nadal does have more grand slams than Djokovic, but it is undeniable that Djokovic’s peak is greater than Nadal’s peak. Additionally, Nadal is dominant on Clay, whereas Djokovic is outstanding on all three surfaces. He’s the only man (this includes both Federer and Nadal) since 1969 to win 4 consecutive grand slams between 2015-16.
