    I owned British Shorthair for some time and they are very laid back cats, they will fit perfectly into your life. Our cat loved playing with us but we also had days where we would be gone for 9-10 hours and she was absolutely fine by herself. They tend to get health issues particularly with eyes and it's also worth to remember that they are very strong and big cats so they need proper build massive scratching post to
    accommodate their weight.

    I had 2 British shorthairs, and I couldn’t believe anyone considered them “not affectionate enough.” I adopted them as seniors, however, due to their senior person going to a nursing home, and they were her whole world. I’m sure she got them well acclimated to cuddling. They hugged me in bed with that loud purr. My son called it their “motors,” and would pet them before I went to bed and say, “Here’s Chessie/Tiger. I started her for you.” He would start their motors so they’d be ready to go ! They have since passed away, and my Burmese just died last month. I’m deciding on a kitten from one of those two breeds, because they are the most tightly bonded loveys I’ve ever had. I’ve had 30+ cats, including a Manx, a Turkish Van, a Sphynx, and many random bred. British Shorthairs and Burmese will always be my favorites! ❤

Personality depends greatly on where and how they grew up and how the 'owners' treat them. We respect their personalities. They can go and sleep wherever they want in the house and roam freely in our huge garden. Very busy people should not have pets as all pets require company and attention.

    As someone who owns a 13 year old British Shorthair bought from a breeder in 2009, from experience I can confirm that almost all of these pros and cons are true; at 2:20 it says that they don't like sitting on your lap, it just depends on the mood they're in and how much they trust you. Also, at 4:30 it says that they're not a good match for people with fur allergies and this is not true. (from my experience) My cat's favourite person in my entire family is my sister who has allergies to fur. They don't like people with allergies extra or any less than anyone else, it all depends on how much love they get.

    • @sciencenotstigma9534
      @sciencenotstigma9534 Před rokem

      @@moffo2626 I believe it is. Mine had a retired older lady who spent all her time with them. Sadly, she had to go to a nursing home. I was in school and would not have been able train them like that. But they were both the most affectionate cats I ever had, right on par with my Burmese. I’ve heard of a family who has a very affectionate BSH. I think they have individual personalities, but a lot of it had to do with having someone there with them all the time. Cuddling yours any chance you get can help. Most cats get cuddlier as they age, but I’ve seen some cuddly young BSHs, too, as they often slow down at a younger age than other breeds. I’m chronically ill and every time I got sick, I had a teddy bear. I really owe that to that sweet old lady, and wish I could have thanked her for all the joy. With more reluctant cats, I have had really good results with cat treats (mine love Temptations, but I’d try a healthier, high protein natural treat first, or they’ll get a taste for junk food…I found out too late, but just google it). I only give the treat in the bed, if they cuddle. At first, they just leave after the treat, but mine have learned to enjoy the cuddles for their own sake. Cats have unique personalities, so there are no guarantees, but treats have worked for me. Also, using a fishing toy with them while I watch TV or do online classes, or taking them out on a leash helps them work off their energy so they want to relax and spend time with me. My BSHs were 8 and 10 when I adopted them, so they didn’t have that issue. One passed away at 14, the other at 23, so that’s why I just mentioned the one I had recently, but they were both lovely. They would literally only play if I pulled a string close enough that they only had to move their paws. Watch BSH Oophen’s family on YT. Look up British Shorthair Oophen. I’m going to look up another family with excellent results. They model how they pamper their VERY cuddly BSH. Good luck! 💙

    i have a mix, it destroys the local ecosystem, and is energetic outside by itself, hence the ecosystem collapsing, laid back, then brings a chunk of the ecosystem

    Ive read articles explaining how the Brits are actually an incredibly healthy breed but prone to some health problems that are manageable with medication and wont impact their quality of life. Just take care of em an take em to the vet regularly like you should with any pet.

    I got a british shorthair 3 weeks ago and i can say she is definitely not a lap cat and she hates it when you pick her up.
    The pro is that they aver very beautiful cats , they are affectionate but with limitations ,they love to pet them, she plays but not as much as a regular domestic breed. Also i am alergic to many things cats too but soo far i dont have simptoms of alergies around my british shorthair cat. Another pro is that when we go to bed she goes to living room and hangs around does her own thing . I got 2 kids she plays with them but when they try to pet her too much and overdo it she hides behind our couch.

    Some things this video got wrong in terms of my experience
    My mother is very very allergic to cats and we have two British shorthairs and she rarely ever has a reaction (If she gets a scratch she might react but that’s about it)
    And they very much are not well behaved, they know exactly what not to do but will deliberately do it anyway, and they make it very obvious they know not to do said things
    And lastly, they spend a ton of time laying about so when they finally have energy, it’s a lot, be prepared to literally see the cat jump off the wall

      I am allergic to most cat breeds, but not against Brits. I lived with two Brits for 10 years without symptoms. So generally they can be considered anti-allergic. However, you should always test it out with the specific cat, as every cat can have different allergic effects, even though they might belong to the same type.

      I'm also allergic to cats (so severe that I had to he hospitalized one time) however, we had our Brit for 5 years and I can pet, hug and kiss him without triggering my allergies.

  • @chrisrowe8746
    @chrisrowe8746 Před 7 měsíci

    I think some of these “facts” are misleading and unfair. It’s impossible to say they’re not a lap cat as many are, look at forums, I own two, one is 100% and one is more 50/50 but both are.
    They also are highly interested in the cat I had prior and purr when seeing him.
    Don’t think of these as facts as a lot is down to how you raise them, bond with them and both your personalities

    • @littleMistake2004
      @littleMistake2004 Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@abcdefg-nu4xj that can happen but most of the time it's not from the cat often it's already a problem with the breeder that they don't socialize the kitten
      There are about 5% of cats who are willingly alone the rest is humen made
