  • Here is a training video teaching the crosscut--a basic combo that strikes first at the opponent's onside head, then his offside leg. This is a technique that you can learn in a few minutes, and spend years mastering.
    Like with the thumb lead, make sure your swordhand shifts through and clears the opponent's shield edge, before you fire the second shot into the leg.

    I miss your instructional videos, please make more! I've learned so much just from watching and implementing techniques you've shown.

      You are very welcome! I wanted to reach out and be able to teach more fighters my favorite techniques, and one of my guys came up with the great idea of doing a video series!
      I'm really happy that folks are enjoying and benefiting from these 'correspondence course' lessons.

      I need to establish muscle memory as a routine. I have just seen a Dr who tells me I have tissue damage in my knee and this is why I am in constant pain. I have to encourage my Brethren here in my Canton to build Pells and practice.

    The under-the-shield version also works with the false (or inside) edge, if you need that extra bit of reach around an opponents shield. (At least, that's what Duke Gunthar says). :)

    • @DietrichvonStroheim
      @DietrichvonStroheim  Před 10 lety +1

      Very true! This technique is actually based on the 'Falling under the shield' sword and buckler technique that calls for the use of the false edge.
      Be aware, though, that using the back edge for this cut in SCA combat is a more advanced version of the technique, because it is more difficult to generate the necessary power when turning the hand over for the back edge, vs. driving out with the front edge. It can be done, but it easier to 'mess up' and throw light that way.

    • @leekellerking
      @leekellerking Před 10 lety

      DietrichvonStroheim I understand.
      The way Duke Gunthar teaches it, you use the right to left motion to coil your hip and then unwind for the shot.
      Probably not a high percentage shot, but it can get your opponent's attention! :-)

  • @Ralphinsc
    @Ralphinsc Před 8 lety +2

    Good point at the end there about arming it. Definitely was falling into that a bit without consistent practice. Thanks for pointing that out to me. Been consistently focusing on throwing more from the hips and shoulder. Definitely generating more power now. Question? I'm taking a one foot angled step to my left with that crosscut. Is that kosher to what I should be doing?

    • @DietrichvonStroheim
      @DietrichvonStroheim  Před 8 lety

      +Ralph Morris Glad that helped. Yes, the easiest thing to do with the Crosscut is to mess it up :-) That shifting through of the hips and hand before, is what makes the difference between a weak slice and a new bruise on someone's thigh.
      The footwork depends greatly on how the opponent reacts. The step you describe can make it easier to get the angle, but can also potentially rob your power, depending on how he moves.

    Interesting video! I'm incorporating your cross cut style into a story I'm writing, actually, and I was curious to ask: are you involved in HEMA by any chance as well as SCA? You have good speed, balance, and technique, and I can see you having a lot of fun with I33, sword and buckler style. www.thearma.org/Manuals/i33/i33.htm

    • @DietrichvonStroheim

      loyalsausages Cool, glad my technique will be part of your story! I have had some small ;) involvement with HEMA as well: www.scatoday.net/node/22579
      I love I33 and often fight sword and buckler in SCA heavy and steel fighting. I don't really differentiate between any of it, other than rulesets...fighting is fighting!

      @@DietrichvonStroheim Ok, I am glad its fine :) time flies man... 8 years ago seems like yesterday. By the way I wanted to ask you, if you could maybe make a video for lefties. I am a left handed and find your videos very useful, but not everything is applicable. Maybe you have like a few tips or can show some advantanges, that left handes fighter can use :) that would we awesome

      Let's see, here is a class I taught on how to fight off-handed fighters, that is equally applicable for lefty vs righty as righty vs lefty. It is on a Facebook group since Duke Timothy's squire filmed it. I think you should be able to view it, but if not, just ask permission to join the group and it should be accessible then:
