    Paul @FabRats I have been looking forward to this build since you first told us your plans for the off road rollback and became skeptical as the build progressed but after seeing it with that bed on it I feel like your gonna' have to stretch that frame at least 3 1/2 feet whether you shorten the bed or not. I just can't see that truck safely hauling the FJ down the road with that much overhang, I believe you'll have a hard time keeping the steer tires planted firmly with that much weight behind the rear axle. I absolutely love the concept and have thoroughly enjoyed watching the build! Looking forward to the finished product! Thanks for takin' us along for the ride, I haven't missed a Fab Rats episode yet! You guys are awesome, keep it up!!!

    @98FleXJ Před 2 měsíci +56

    Keep the flatbed at 17 ft and make it a tilt deck. All you have to build is a pivot point at the rear and a cylinder. The weight will all be at the front with a car loaded so the deck length doesn't really hurt anything. This will also eliminate the need for the whole rollback frame, reducing weight dramatically.

  • @schmojo33
    @schmojo33 Před 2 měsíci +13

    This is what I expected to happen. You gotta go for the rollback but you need a longer beefier frame and more tires and a beefier axle or even better would be 2 rear axles for more traction and flotation with 4 super single tires and essentially its a 6x6 with 3 lockers. Don't shorten the bed too much just for the FJ. Make an offroad rollback that can handle the wrecker. The rollback itself, can then be used when you need more weight/pulling power and have a whole life of utility instead of basically just being the FJ's princess carrier. You may need to just get a whole different frame and swap the cab, motor, and bed instead of trying to make work what you currently have.

    I wouldn’t cut that bed down at all I would stretch the truck to fit the bed. You definitely should stretch it, go dually and make it a roll back like it was intended. Look at how much you have used your roll backs already so imagine having a nice one that is actually capable off road. It honestly should have been a dually or at the very least super singles from the start. I didn’t understand why the heck, you did away with the dually axel from that newer Dodge you robbed the springs from. Ramp trucks suck and the people saying to go static are just lazy and want the easy option.

    • @carl4043
      @carl4043 Před 2 měsíci +31

      You guys are missing the important point that the rollback hardware weighs about a ton. Look how beefy those sliders are and don't forget a complete hydraulic system goes along with it. He's going to run out of capacity before he ever loads a vehicle.
      Also, if he was going to do this it would have been easier to cut the entire back half off the tow truck and weld the old cab to it. That way all the towing equipment would remain fully functional and intact

    Honestly, you should do roll back. It may be more of a pain than a static bed but... It'll be nice to have when you need it. Also furthermore, your gonna want to extent the frame of the Ratback no matter what you do cause otherwise it gonna be doin carolina squats all day long, maybe even try tipping backwards if the weight past the rear axle is enough to overcome the weight at the front of the Ratback. Besides, it being a roll back type bed is kinda what the majority of us wanna see since that was going to be the original vision, and well... might as well stick to it.

      @@kshepthedrummer Even with the shortened deck, that still puts the rear axle around about the middle of the bed at best. Still going to pop wheelies with something on the bed, especially if you have to load it backwards.

    Needs dual wheels. That bed and FJ are gonna be dang heavy on a set of single wide tires.

    I think you need all the functionality of the roll back. Don't take the easy way. This is why I watch you guys, to overcome, persevere, and pervale.
    Keep up the good work.🤟

    Stretch the frame on the truck leave the bed alone. It’s about the same amount of work the truck Well handle a lot better. You’ll be happier in the long run. God Bless from mustang Ridge Texas (Falco)

    The bed looks great on the rollback. I think the wheel base is not far apart enough for a roll back, might cause the front wheels to come off the ground. So i vote for the stationary bed.

    There is a reason why the Isuzu had dual rear wheels, the roll back mechanism is not light, neither is the FJ. Weight is not your friend in current wheelbase and rear axle setup. Also may need to devise a way to purge air from the Elevated heater hoses.

    Being a roll back driver , I think no matter what you'll want to mave the rear axle back , otherwise you'll jave too much overhang weight and barely any on the front axle . Other than my 2 cents , I love the build and am happy your back working on it , I'd kill to jave a truck like that as my daily tow Truck haha .

    If Rudy can make a roll back out of a K truck for mini jeeps, you can surely turn this into one! Of course Rudy is a better fabricator than you, so its OK if you can't. :) You are by far my favorite channel on YT! I can't even watch Robbie anymore, for multiple reasons.
