USB- Passthrough with Cisco Video Devices

- Cisco video endpoints provide an amazing level of interoperability with various meeting platforms. There may still be a need for more features which are available on the desktop application only or older endpoints shall be enabled for non- standard meetings. In order to do so, you have the option to grab microphone and camera with an external device (built-in with our latest generation devices) and present it to your meeting application and send the application audio and video back to the endpoint. The following video guides you through the steps required to USB Passthrough enable your endpoints (with the example of a Cisco Codec Plus):

This is great! At Webex One earlier this year, Cisco announced USB Passthrough for the Room Kit and Room Kit Plus. Is this the official solution? I see that those devices are slated to have support for "native mode" with Room OS11. Does this mean the USB port on the back of the device will be enabled, or does that just mean use the Inogeni and the macro's will be built in and officially supported?
Yes, this is the solution for the RoomKit series and older devices. All newly released endpoints, the whole desk series, BoardPro and the Room Bar all have native USB-C Passthrough support.

@@itrollop yes, absolutely. With the desk devices, BoardPro and RoomBar, you can connect without any script on the device and neither you'll have to deploy drivers on your laptops 🎉

Does this work with the sx10 as well?
There is a great compatibility matrix, but unfortunately the SX10 is not working like this, no: roomos.cisco.com/macros/USB%20Mode%20Version%202#usb-mode-room-device-compatibility-matrix

when using CE, this works, but I am deploying to SX80's. One problem that I'm having is that CE touch10 times out and then you have to touch it to get the camera to come back on. I set the standby to 480 so it would not time out, but this is not working. Is there a workaround? Does USB mode bypass the time out issue?
As far as I know, it's because you don't have anything shared on the device. This behaviour is not codec related, it's because you don't share the content of your laptop on the screen. Not talking about sharing into the call, but sharing locally. Please try to do so and you should see it continue to work.

@@otammalo So in our systems we have Creston control systems integrated into the codec. We were not able to deploy the USB mode. However, this is what we were able to accomplish:
-We connected output 2 of the Cisco SX80 to our A/V to USB grabber, and shared the connector 3 "input" of the Cisco sx80 for Camera input instead of input 1.
-We then changed the camera ID to 1 (input 3) and camera connector input 1 to ID 3, thereby regaining camera control of the Crestron system. This enabled us to share input 3 as the camera input to the codec "webcam". The Crestron system has a "presentation mode" pre programmed to share input 3. So this allows us to share the input of the camera of the precision 60 via Vaddio One Link. The only caveat, is that the Audio is coming from a Biamp Tesira.
-The Biamp output combines all of the conference room microphones to the "audio/video" grabber device, therefore bypassing the codec for audio, in an SX80 in our particular situation. Also...muting of audio is bypassed by the touch10 because NO audio is being passed through the codec.
In our situation you can possibly lose camera control via the touch10. Camera control was established through the crestron control system via RS232 and Crestron touch panel.
I understand this is a convoluted way to establish the same thing that a USB mode would duplicate, but some systems do not allow software versions to be upgraded due to control systems having to be reprogrammed in an AMX/Crestron environment.
Interestingly enough, we found older TC based systems with SX80s to work better, due to setting standby mode to "480" to actually work for 8 hours of standby without having to engage the touch10. We basically used the DVI output of connector 3 to show the camera going into a Vaddio Bridge mini or a SIIG av/usb3 grabber to accomplish the same thing, without having to share or trick the system into sharing mode like you have to do in CE software.
I appreciate all of your help and answering all of my questions in our endeavor. Much thanks. Hopefully my explanation will help someone else in the same situation using a complex control processor system.

One thing only, from our point of view, we expect the user to share the screen on the endpoint locally, as he is using the device as a "webcam". So it's natural to share your screen and it's therefore not to trick the device. But by the number of questions we get in this regard, I fully agree, it's not that natural ;-)

To video and audio at laptop, we can use barco CX series to wirelessly?
I have never tried to do so and am honestly not very familiar with barco series products.
