  • I can't believe it has already been 10 years since this movie came out.
No doubt one of the best in the zombie genre.
For me personally, second only to Dawn of the Dead (2004) and sharing second place with Train to Busan (2016), third would be 28 Days Later (2002).
My only complaint would be that the movie tried to do too much. The outbreak, followed by looking for the origins, and then solving the virus. Thus, it feels rushed. Especially the last 40 min.
More then half of the film we're just trying to survive, and in the other (less than) half movie not only the "patient zero" was found, but out of nowhere after all hope was lost, a random "solution" suddenly appears.
Not sure who decided that this would be the best option to go for as I'm sure that the original movie script and writing must have been much better.
I would bet that somebody "up there" made a corporate decision that this will be only a singular movie and he wants the full story in it - that should have been really a 3 movies (the outbreak and fight survival, the search for the patient zero and looking for "cure/solution") instead.
What it lacks in story, it makes up for in production quality and atmosphere that is top notch.
Casting Brad Pitt can never go wrong either (change my mind challenge).
Sadly, no other notable performance can be mentioned - outside of the zombie actors that delivered.
Which brings me to: That every zombie movie is made by how terrifying the zombies are, and this movie delivers for sure.
I have no doubt that my another favorite zombie movie (already mentioned) Train to Busan (2016) was heavily influenced by the look, behavior, and the creation (mutation process) of the zombies in this movie, as they are almost identical.
The awkward limb-twisting during the change process is very reminiscent.
Also, the "feral" nature of the zombies that really have some speed on them and wouldn't be easy to avoid or run away from, as they don't get tired, you do.
The "walls" of zombie bodies falling over each other blindly as they try to rush the same "target" is also almost a trademark of this movie not seen to this extend before, but I would argue to put into another level in Train to Busan (2016).
My favorite scene in the movie would be inside of the apartment block on the stairs with the flare. The was as "dark" and horror like as it got and the only time i felt "uneasy" myself during the watch.
I highly recommend! As a matter of fact, I think I will have to re-watch the movie myself right now, since I have hyped myself up just by writing this "review".

Another movie I love, you never know what you would do in this situation. I remember the beginning scene in 28 weeks later when the protagonist does a runner leaving his wife behind.

Exactly, one never knows until he is in similar position. I just hope I would never leave anyone I love behind just to preserve myself. I couldn't live with that anyway.
