What if Mad Max: Fury Road Was A Silent Movie?

  • I always felt Mad Max: Fury Road would've made a perfect silent movie. Little dialogue, a reliance on music and over-the-top acting performances. Let's see how it turns out when it is actually turned into a silent movie.

This was easier than it looked. Fury Road has little dialogue, it is framed very well for a 4:3 instead of 16:9 format, there is little CGI, and the music from the soundtrack does most of the lifting work. It is as if director George Miller designed it like this. With a bit of work, it might actually possible for someone to do the entire movie like this.

Miller always put the action in the center of the screen, making it more easy for your eyes to follow. Because of this, its easy to convert film to 4:3

Don't forget that opening sequence in the cave being in a lower framerate to be frenetic and jarring, has that old timey silent vibe (you should habe dropped more frames throughout haha its a bit too smooth) otherwise damn good job! The film major in me absolutely loves what you did with the death scene

Considering Miller also mentioned the black and white/'black and chrome edition was his original vision of the film too, perhaps there's some subconscious design going all the way to classic silent films where visuals and music conveyed the story over dialogue. Excellent work, felt like these scenes communicated everything intended!

Could be. The night scenes were monochrome in the original color version of the movie as well. Also a conscious choice by Miller tying it back to the silent movie era. That is what me do this video after I saw the movie again a couple of weeks back.

Looks more dramatic and the black and white with sepia toning add more to the intensity of the narrative. I LIKE THIS.

Outstanding! First, what a great idea. I have seen the film in black and white, and this _ol' timey_ sepia is considerably different.
The only time I was pulled out of it was during the slo-mo explosion around 2:03. But that may not be the case for most. I have an affinity for film and film history, and at 54 yrs old, have a great many silent films under my belt. I'm not used to seeing slow motion in them.
The only thing I might change is the degradation effect. As solid as it is already (having just enough to make it look like a restored print), I would have added a bit more. But I also realize some programs lay on the _ol' timey_ movie effects a bit too heavy.
At this point, I don't know if adding a bit more would improve it for me, or result in too many scratches, etc. One might even argue, adding more could give it a blatantly fake aspect. So, without having seen it with more corrosion effects,¹ I'd say you may have hit the sweet spot.
*EDIT:* Oh, and I really like your choice for the intertitle/title cards. Perfect! 😎👍
All around great job. Really enjoyable watch. Thanks for sharing!

¹ ─ I may run it through an editor (very basic app effect) just for my own curiosity. Then again, maybe not. I quite like it as it is, and have been unusually lazy of late. 🥱

      Thanks.
I toned back some of the standard degradation effects in my movie editor. It needs to feel old, without distracting the viewer because he's seeing lines, spots, etc. everywhere. That was kind of my vision on it.
