What if Star Wars Was A Silent Movie?

  • I always felt Star Wars would've made a perfect silent movie. A reliance on music, clearly readable acting performances and relatively simple dialogue for a movie that length. Let's see how it turns out when it is actually turned into a silent movie.

Some of us remember 8mm films that we (or our folks) would buy at K-Mart that did just this. I still have my "Creature from the Black Lagoon" 8mm!

Yep! I still have my Star Wars 8mm reel! They had color ones, but I could only afford the black and white version. I would play music from another source while my mom ran the projector for me. 📽️

Back in the 70s, you could buy a Super 8 reel of Star Wars clips -- silent and B/W just like this (they had color & sound versions too)

There are a few DVD "preservations" of these Super 8 films floating around the internet from Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back. I found them several years ago and it was fun to see them this way.

A buddy of mine spent the extra bucks to get the sound and color 400 ft Super 8 film reel back in 1978. I only had the silent / B&W one. I bought mine first, if I recall correctly. My dad was a music teacher at the Hudson High School (in Ohio), so we had access to some pretty sweet sound equipment. I also spent all of _my_ hard earned money on a GAF Sound Super 8 movie projector (the first run trial model for Chinon's line of S8 projectors, made in Japan but marketed first through GAF, I believe).
We figured out how to run the mono track line from my projector, through my Dad's Harmon Kardon stereo system and into two five foot high column speakers off to the left and right of my parents white basement wall. The throw on the projector was great so we got a bright, theater quality 5'x8' (roughly) projected image and watched it over and over again (many, many years before the advent of video projectors).
The reel went from "Didn't we just leave this party?"... all the way through to the shot after "Help! I'm melting!! This is all your fault", so we got the whole Death Star escape scene. It was great.
Unfortunately, my friend lost track of his print. I tried to buy another one for nostalgia's sake off of eBay, but the prints weren't stable and everyone I have seen in recent years faded until they were a poor rendition of this silent version. No color left and faded contrast, more's the pity.

John Williams can tell a story with music alone. As A kid, before VHS and way before DVD this is how I relived the movies, I almost wore out my LPs.

Here's a game tro play: Before the card appears GUESS THE LINE. I got about 2/3rds of it.
Once Again @CaptRobau - - you totally blew my mind.
Picture the scene - in 1982 we recorded Star Wars off TV one christmas. Then every Saturday Morning for a whole year and a half after that, before Westling: BigDaddy--v- GiantHaystacks and Dickie Davis presents "World of Sport", before Noel Edmond's "Swap Shop" and Chris Tarrant/Sally James' "Tiswas", before animes "He Man" and "Battle of the Planets": that VHS tape was played in our living room.
I can honestly say I've watched this over 100 times! It's was emotional seeing it like this - and guessing the lines before the cards came up. Many thanks.

If you want to, you can simply watch _Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope_ (or any of the _Star Wars_ movies) in black & white by adjusting your TV color scheme to be in black and white (you must make sure that everything is similar in B&W as is is when you watch the movie in color.)

Lucas has commented that he wanted the films to be made where the dialog is superfluous for long stretches (e.g., the opening space battle in Revenge of the Sith). In fact, there's a video essay on "So Uncivilized"s channel about how his infamously "wooden dialog" is actually just sound effects in many scenes. There's very little need for exposition during action scenes because it's all delivered through the images, and John Williams' score provides the emotional context.

  • @russellmillett5642
    @russellmillett5642 Před rokem +1

Totally a testament to John Williams, no emotion is lost without the sound fx

Actually George Lucas was an admirer of silent films, he even said that Star Wars could work as a silent film, you could put it mute and still comprehend what happens, at least he said that about Ep. 4. I like the title cards used for Yavin Battle, the music of John Williams it's already admirable by itself.

In the late 70's/early 80's, they sold 8mm film reels 🎞️ with film clips.¹ I had a black and white *Star Wars* one. . _.still_ have it, actually.
Funny thing, it is actually very similar to this video. The scenes on the film reel are of _Luke_ and _Ben_ with _Leia's_ message, and getting the lightsaber. Then it transitions to inside the Death Star, from when Han says, _"Didn't we just leave this party?"_ Of course, these were silent films so there were (slightly abbreviated) subtitles instead.
The 8mm film continues all the way through the escape. Stopping after the last TIE fighter is destroyed and _Leia_ gives _Mr. fuzzy Chewface_ a hug.
I would usually play the soundtrack music on the stereo to match. A few times I also played _"Help!"_ by the Beatles, during the Death Star escape. Worked quite well, if I remember correctly. 📽️
*Great job with the video **_Capt Robau!_* 😎👍

I always turn the color off when watching any Godzilla movie. They seem more serious without all the distractions from the horrible colors chosen for the sets and costumes.
The exception being "Hedorah" of course.

I don't care much for the newer films. They pretty much lost me when they fired the guy in the rubber suit (and all of those wonderful miniature set builders)
The image settings in your TV menu should have color adjustment.

The Silent movies I've seen have cards describing action as well as dialogue. Still, it is an approach worthy of Mel Brooks' "Silent Movie" (1976). This version will confuse Lrrr, ruler of Omicron Persei 8 in a thousand years.;)
