I traveled with Olympics. Year 1985.
From Copenhagen to Athens only my little sister and I, no parents.
I was 14 my sister 12 years old.
As we were eating the steward found out that we were traveling alone.
"Αχ ρε παιδιά, ελληνόπουλα είστε!!
Ελα πάρτε και άλλο ψωμί!!"
He handled over three pieces of bread to each of us, we now had four breads each.
I remembered my Γιαγιά telling me some years before that it was αμαρτία if you don't eat up your bread or worse if you threw it out.
My sister couldn't eat all that bread, so out of generosity to the kind steward and to avoid αμαρτία I ate 7 pieces of bread and the food served.
I was completely full and the last two hours of the trip I was uncomfortable.
We landed went to Γιαγιά who was waiting for her beautiful grandchildren, ready with a big casserole of μακαρονάδα.....after first potion of course you NEVER dared say no thanks to second portion to Γιαγιά.. I felt like a pregnant whale for two day.
On the plane home we also traveled with Olympics. I started sweating when I saw the ψωμί, only got one piece....I didn't dare speak Greek on that trip😂

My father carried a tramoutzana with tsipouro on the plane from Athens to NY back in early 1980s. Due to air pressure the top came off and bounced like a bullet a couple of times prior to landing on an American’s lap. It was hilarious and the plane- at least that section of it- smelled like tsipouro for the remaining part of the flight.

During Onassis' days Olympic Airways was one of the best (top 10 airline). The decline came after the nationalization.
You're absolutely right. Irrespective of the decline though, Olympic Airways seems to still hold a special place in the hearts of the diaspora. Everyone has a story to tell about their experience flying with them. We love the stories!
After nationalisation Onasis kept the right to provide airplanes to Olympic airlines. He bought an airplane sold it to another of his companies in higher price and then sold it to Olympic. He was raising the price with so called transfer pricing which is fraud.

Hi guys, i am married to an English woman, i am Greek myself and i used to tell my wife stories about Greek student (when i was a student) who were travelling to UK with a suitcase full of meat balls or gourounopoula (roasted pig) , which suddenly opened in the carousel of the luggage claim in, Heathrow, London. My wife, for sure did not believe me, but after this video, she did!

Olympic is the safest airline company.
Unfortunately, the airline that we're talking about 'Olympic Airways' - later to be re-named 'Olympic Airlines' - ceased to exist at the end of 2009. The current 'Olympic Air' is actually a different company.
Talking about the non smokers in the smoking section there was a high profile case against Olympic in the late 90s where exactly that happened and the passenger died after being asked to be re seated. I think they changed their tune after that! I
