Bushcraft Survival Skills - SALT FROM SEAWATER On A Open Fire- Pole Spear Catch & Cook
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 16. 02. 2023
- After getting so many comments on my last solo island camping series about making salt from the ocean, I thought what better way to find out just how much salt you really get and how difficult it really is... Great way to test some survival skills and learn something new. We also catch a fish on the pole spear and need to season it with the salt we make to give us a little bit of a challenge đ

I didnât wake up today thinking I was gonna watch water boil on CZcams, but leave it to olâ Rod to make even that interesting đ Great work as always, mate đ€
SAME lmao
Rod, I've been watching you for a few years. I really appreciate how real you keep it. You're not trying to sell us something. I look forward to every video you post. You give us beautiful scenery and an adventure. Keep it up dude. Definitely an inspiration for the CZcams community.
You know youâre liked when you film with one hand holding a phone whilst cooking water and people LOVE IT đ
Nice one Rod, youâre the man. đ
haha so true
Haha, cheers mateđ
Haha, yeah we like him!
Todayâs video is boiling water⊠Quick I have to watch this!
Awesome.
*proceeds to casually make a liner out of the salt and snort it*
This episode on Breaking Nice.. Rod rediscovers chemistry.
Bring a half sheet pan like from a restaurant on your next trip and leave it halfway full in the sun for a day or two while you camp. The sun will evaporate it, obviously not as quickly as a fire, but you'll have a nice haul of salt.
"Lets taste the salt.." *tastes salt* "Super salty."
Who woulda thought salt was salty? đ great video Rod. :)
Hey rod, while you're in the water spearing etc, could you please put the names of the species of fish you're seeing on the screen? Ybs does it and I enjoy seeing the names of all the fish he see's. If it doesn't make editing more of a pain that is. Love the vids mate!
He could even do a commentary over some of the diving bits
@@cyclocrossthesea-lionman1824 I like this idea, but wouldn't want it all the time. I love hearing the sounds of the water and things he bumps up against in the water. It's a very calming part of the video for me
Straight into it, nice. Thought I was watching a Chris Bamman video in the beginning
Nice one Rod, I was one of the salt commenters (âsorry to state the bleeding obviousâ comment) a week or two ago. Great to see you test it. As someone else has said here and I mentioned originally, a decent wide flat tray would be a good addition for this, leave it in the sun and wind and let evaporation do a lot of the work before cooking it. You want to go full survival mode, make a space blanket surround to reflect more heat in.
Alternatively, with a syringe plastic plunger (no needle), or even a clean sponge, you could go round rocks and find natural âtraysâ/small-pools of concentrated salty water that have been drying already, and use that water to start evaporating or cooking down instead of sea water. Would save fuel for if you are using your gas, and once you figure out how much you would need you wonât need to cook down nearly so much water.
Sea water is quite salty at about 3.5% concentration-think of a cup of seawater-could you drink it or would it be salt overload? If itâs salt overload in a cup of sea water, itâs probably more than enough for a mealđ, hence, do the maths the other way-how many grams of salt do you need for a fish or per day? Recommended MAX daily intake is about 2.4 grams-you will get that much from just 65ml of normal sea water, and less from condensed rock pool water. That should be fine for cooking with gas if you canât light a fire, especially if you use natural evaporation for some of it.
Rock on dude.
Came here to say the same. I've never in my life attempted it but I threw the suggestion out in the comments last time he needed salt and it's so cool to see it happen
Yea true on a lot of those points was good to test the theory and see the resultsđ
If you were going full survival mode you would not eat salt because its going to kill you. It dehydrates you so youâd have to drink more fresh water and salt is not necessary for survival.
In sea water there is typically close to 35 grams of dissolved salts in each liter. It is written as 35 â° The normal range of ocean salinity ranges between 33-37 grams per liter (33â° - 37â°).
Tip of the spear3:30... on the edge of my seat 16:26 ... and/the salt of the earth 21:32 đ The long and the short of itđ Sweet video Rodđđ„
The sound of your snorkel filling up with water relaxes me
Nice shot, btw. Pretty murky
"Let's get some salt. Mmm yea super salty" - rod, 2023.
I have a way with wordsđ
Rod, I know this comment is late, I'm not sure if you've learned but instead of doing an entire pot which takes forever you do very small layers so they burn off quickly and you will have the salt faster and you repeat until you have enough vs waiting an hour to have too much
I'm watching this now. Great that you are making salt. I remember a day, in the late 1970s, when I was a kid & my family decided to make salt in Suffolk, England. We made a fair bit of grey looking salt that no one wanted to use. Yours looks much whiter. The boiling pot was black for ever more. It hung in the kitchen to remind us of that day.
That is a good amount of salt from that pan. Flavoured salts for the win.
Rod's Backcountry Salt Company coming soon to the merch store!
Francis Mallmann vibe right here. So good
If I am ever shipwrecked on a deserted island, please be theređI'm beginning to think there isn't much you can't do!! Great video as always Rod XOXOX
This topic showed up in old man and the sea. A classic topic
Dude, I can't wait to try doing this in the coming sea kayaking season. Cheers, and thanks for sharing all your videos from Nova Scotia, Canada đšđŠ
Mate kayaking is a lot more complicated than boiling salt water to get salt... if this sort of thing is news to you you might need to take some safety classes đ
@@shawnduddridge đ
You used the technique I mentioned last week when you had no salt...boiling salt water to harvest a batch, Stoked! Love your channel, another beautiful Friday.
Great vid RodâŠI was imagining how good that fish must have tasted.
Anytime I can find something eatable from nature, it sort of brings on a different level of satisfaction and enjoyment, so Iâm guessing the sea salt really made that fish extra good. Cheers! đšđŠ
Epic video Rod growing up in Hawaii we cooked the fish just like that brings back a lot of memories. Stay safe out there and have a blessed day. Aloha from Kansas
Fantastic Rod , was excited when I saw youâd taken my comment and rolled with it , we usually boil a cup which is good for a meal , probably should have mentioned that using an old pot is the better way to go, but it turns out to be a really nice very salty salt so you donât need heaps
I knew it would be very salty when I saw you use sea water in the Mangroves. But great little experiment and you did get a Lot of sea salt out of it for the amount of water you used. Well done Rod, another great vid. I could taste the BBQ'd lime salted fish through the screen!!
Loved this vid mate
Used to do this all the time back in the day
Keep a quarter cup of rice with you to chuck a few kernels with the salt in the jar if you want to remove the last bit of moisture from it..
Fantastic adventure and awesome cook up. Now you know when you need a bit of salt and forgot yours back at the house what you can do. Fish on. Tim
awesome vid man, keep em comingđ€đŸ
When I made that comment, I didn't realize that you couldn't have a fire... but yeah, takes forever, but the yield is substantial
Awesome vid as always buddy. Keep up the great work I always love a Friday!
Wow, Rod! didn't realize how much salt is in seawater, good to know in a survival scenario, thanks for sharing!
thank you, Rod, I just enjoy watching your Vids, please give the giveaway to the next subscriber. keep up the great content!
I am actually surprised how much salt was rendered by evaporating just 1 pan of salt water. That's really neat I will have to try that some day. Very cool
On an island, where you can't light a fire, you can maybe lay a plastic bag on the ground and fill it with a centimeter of water and let the sun do the job of extracting salt from it.
Nice, here we go again. End of my day and get to enjoy one of my favorite CZcamsrs
Your show really makes me happy! Thank you for sharing your adventures!
Love your Chanel brother! Keep it up! One note though, youâve been at this long enough now , bring a small tripod so you donât have to hold your phone! Much love!
That bottle is a valuable survival tool
Great video Rod, keep them coming!
Well done Rod we would do this often while camping and fishing and the salt is fantastic .
Thank you for the upload Rod đ€
Love all your vids, but actually really enjoyed the raw nature of the informative, phone filmed video. Thanks.
Yes sir! Another great video! Stay safe brother!
Mission complete.. awesome vid sir đđđ
Very interesting episode. You're keeping me hooked, Rod.
Best way to start my Saturday morning!! â€
Hey Rod
Thanks for posting your video
Miss watching your classic island fishing, cook and camping trips.đą
Hopefully you can one day
Cheers
Man, that's awesome. I wouldnt have thought it would be that much salt!
Yea I was surprised how much there was toođ
Definitely going to have to try that! Thanks for sharing my friend đ€
Great vid as always Rodster :)
Awesome job rod!!! Love your videos bro
Ahh! Good start to the weekend! Thanks!
Amazing content bro. Love from New York
Awesome! It worked! Really happy you tried this out, scratched such an itch. I think home made salt with a home concocted infusion sounds like an awesome addition to the kitchen đ
Once again thanks for the great content man
Was waiting all morning for this đđ
Evening here.
But Rod always comes through.
Nice one Rod ...that was a good experiment...lots of homemade SEA SALT !!! LIVERPOOL UK đ
Mate such a simple video and it was great! Wouldn't mind more like that and it is close to home.
Hi Rod, wow, super beautiful underwater footage and loving the sound of bubling glug glug,đ€ż. What a stunning experiment with delicious result for your fish lunch, lol ! Ty for sharing an other great adventure, BIG Like đđđ€©
Cool video! I like the survival stuff and island camping, underwater stuff is all good. It's cool you have a line tree in the backyard đ
amazing vid bud. I enjoyed it
Another awesome video Rod, how good was making your own salt, not to shabby mate, well done. Thanks for sharing ur adventures buddy
A1 content as always! Definitely going to try that salt trick
I'm surprised in an area so vastly different and sandy than the underwater shoots you nromally do that there is still so much sound from the marine life
Yea those pistol shrimp are everywheređ
đ§đ§đ§đ§That is so cool you gave the idea of making salt a crack Rod đ
Definitely one for places with fire though.
Really cool vid.
enjoying the vidz rod keep them coming
i would recommend using 3 stones positioned in a triangle shapen between each other withthe right amount height of elevation, that way you get to maximize the fire that is heating under your pot. plus you don't have to keep watching it if the sticks are breaking and will probably save you the hassle of worrying if it might spill or put out your fire. the only maintenance you'll worry about is if you're running out of firewood to heat whatever you're cooking.
@RoKKiT_KiT_ thanks but i am no idiot đ try better next time
That's funny. I didn't comment but was wondering the same thing. A while back crabbing out of San Francisco, our Capt. buddy steamed dungeness crab fresh on the deck in a pot of seawater. It was both too salty for me, and delicious to have crab that fresh. Nice job!
Every time I see the orange spear Iâm reminded of that little tiny orange fish that hung out with ya and wanted to âschoolâ with the spearâŠlol
Haha, yea I remember that guyđ
Very cool Idea. Thats alot of salt, way more that you and I thought.
A hard way to make a beautifully simple dish.
I would try the king's camera for underwater footage. Apparently the sound ain't real good. But they are 1080. And hold a 32 gig card. And if they did they are only 40 or 50 bucks a shot. And they come with a pretty good mounting kit. And I will say king's seem good with warranty. I had an inverter pack it in and they sent me a new one before I even posted the old one back. I still did send it back tho (for those wondering)
Unfortunately with bad audio and only 1080p resolution he kings camera might not do the job these day. But still o might check out some different options this time instead of go prođ
@@rokkitkit oh ok my dumb arse didn't realise the went better than 1080. Kings may be better than that. I haven't looked in ages. And I was more talking underwater where sound would matter so much. And I figured that would wear them out quicker
And that right there is why you never drink sea water!! That was so awesome!!
Real good show, great
NICE going Rod, now you are a true old salt!
Great video! Cheers!
Smart idea with the boogie board mate đ
Its been a while since I saw an Elemenopee, takes me back to my younger years on the boog scene.
Thatâs cool as man, Iâm going to try this
Super salty. Funny about that mate. đ€Ł
Thanks Rod
great vid really enjoyed it thanks....peace out
very well done if we need a kit.đ. Salt with a special tasteâŒïž
Super cool!!!
I would seriously love to see you and John (Lost Lakes) collaborate on some "foreign exchange" vids where you go to the Great White North and join him for some canoe fishing/camping trips and he goes Down Under to join you for some tropical island adventures. That would be rad. Not like your individual vids don't rock. Just Y'all are my favorites and my brain sez... DOUBLE NUKING!!!
Hi Rod...if you do the salt from the ocean again you should do about a cup of water at a time then it wont take as long
so so cool! Amazing for sure.
Brilliant innervation with the boogy board. Nice work mate!! Bummer about ya cameras rod
bit late to the party, but thanks for the new vid :D
Funfact: in a litre of sweater is roughly 35 grams of salt.
Pretty cool to DIY anything - didnât think youâd get so much from a single boil either??? Good stuff, Iâm still gonna use a grocery store as long as the world hasnât ended and I got to boil my own salt -
Good video. Seeing how you live on warm, sunny OZ, maybe make some using solar dehydration. Mock up a drying pan on an outdoor table. Just use a sheet of plastic for the shallow pan. Sun dries and sterilizes the product with UV.
@Ross I was just thinking he could do it in his back yard. The man is a good cook. He could make his own natural salt for the kitchen.
Lol I did say to boil some down last episode. I used about half a litre on a non stick pan and it was enough for the fish I cooked up. Heaps better on a fire
Hook up baits. We use these here in So-Cal and they work great.
Awesome video! Just kidding, havenât watched (it dropped only 4 minutes ago), but Iâm sure it will be awesome.
Flavoured salt is such a good idea. You should try it.
Blessings brother
Sorry to hear about your GoPro troubles Rod. This is another great video. Iâve always been curious about this and now I know. Hey Rod just curiousâŠhave you ever shared how you got into fishing and survival? What did you do before you got into youtube? Just curious as a big fan of your channel.
Reminds me of when I speared a puffer fish in Oaxaca, with a wooden fence post. I wanted to eat it afterwards but found out it was dangerous to prepare or eat.
Get on board Go pro, sponsor this champion, he deserves it.đ
I wishđ
That was great, maybe stainless steel pan next time, I don't trust aluminum to not shed into salt. Just another mineral added I guess. That was an eye opener though. cheers
Shallow, murky water makes me think of saltwater crocodiles. There aren't any in that area?
Chefs frequently say that pasta water should be salted to seawater consistency and that does take quite a bit of salt.
