The Simpsons just entered it's 27th season and has been renewed for a 28th. As the longest-running primetime scripted series on television, The Simpsons has produced hundreds of characters, each with a different voice - but not necessarily a different actor. That's because each of the principal actors on the show voice multiple characters, in some cases dozens of them.

Think about it: *every* conversation between Mr. Burns and Mr. Smithers is Harry Shearer talking to himself. Those people are insanely talented.

Watching Hank play Apu on the Inside the Actors Studio episode blew my mind. There's a story about how the show's producers were uncertain about Apu being Indian and becoming a stereotype, and they changed their minds the very instant Hank read the line "Hello, Mr. Simpson!". I don't doubt that for a second.
He is a great voice actor, but the best of all time is Mel Blanc, and Hank Azaria would agree on that.
Dan Castellaneta would be my pick. Maybe they tie.
Nancy Cartwright voice acts only male characters?
She didn't do a bad job.
Ethan Zepeda No, she does Maggie’s incoherent babbling and giggles. Maggie’s voice is by various people such as Liz Georges, Elizabeth Taylor and James Earl Jones.
She does a lot of young boys voices. She has done some other voices that are still interesting. Rufus from Kim Possible, Mindy from Animaniacs, apparently Gloria in Richie Rich. Funny though, she originally started in radio before being noticed.

Tress MacNeille has some SERIOUS range as a voice actor! It's especially impressive that she has made so many unique, memorable voices that you would instantly recognize yet none of them could be considered major characters.
I don’t think people give Harry Shearer enough credit for being THAT good at so many characters with such wildly different vocal range! I’m also really impressed with Pamela Hayden!
the man can run some senseful scenes with how many characters he voices. Like lenny Smithers and Burns.
@@clu2573I can actually imitate 20 of Harry Shearer's character including Mr. Burns, Waylon Smithers, Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner, Reverend Lovejoy, Lenny Leonard, Otto Mann, Dr. Hibbert, Kent Brockman, and Rainier Wolfcastle.

Also, I feel like Pamela Hayden is super underrated. Milhouse is my favorite character in the show. Nancy and (especially) Tress get talked about so much, and rightfully so, but Pamela and Milhouse have been right there by Bart's side.

It's an extremely close call, but Hank Azaria's always stood out to me as the most outstanding one. His performance and deliveries are just incredible, and really brought the show and jokes to life.
I've been a Simpsons fan for close to 20 years and HARRY SHEARER was a SHOCK, I had no idea he voiced so many characters! Also heads up as a lot of these including Martin Prince, Karl, Officer Lou, and more have been replaced :)
Same, and I was introduced to the show in late 2005 (I was 4 at the time) because, to be honest, I thought that The Simpsons was a way better show for me to watch than Power Rangers because of the latter having a lot of violence from all those explosions and defeating villains with blasters and swords. Now, at 22 years old, I realize that the target audience for The Simpsons is teenagers (13+) and adults (18+), while the target audience for Power Rangers is children, but ages 7 and older because of the TV-Y7 FV rating.
Tress voiced Manjula later in "The Sweetest Apu". The clip used here is when Jan Hooks voiced her in "I'm with Cupid". Also, Mrs. Glick in her clip was voiced by Cloris Leachman in "Three Men and a Comic Book", with Tress taking over after.
Phil Hartman was also a huge voice actor.

+MeanSabean01 Like dil z said, they came to an agreement This video kind of explains it. He wanted to be paid more than the other members of the main troupe. Fox wanted to pay all members who voice the family a set price, but Shearer thought he deserved more because he voiced so many other characters as opposed to just the family.
I don't think he was being selfish or conceited. I think he was playing his position. If you're voicing Homer Simpson, who is probably in more episodes than any other character and then STILL coming in for extra days to voice 20+ other characters... that seems fair. It wasn't about him thinking he was better... he justed wated more money for doing more work. That's fair.
+DocZombiePhD Firstly, Shearer does not voice Homer. Secondly, Frank Azaria voices more characters than anyone else on the show... more than Shearer and even more than Castellaneta, who is the one who voices Homer Simpson. Don't talk nonsense.
I never knew certain characters are voiced by the same actors. Especially Kent Brockman's, Lisa's, and Homer's.

1:59 is from Jan Hooks' go as Apu's wife, not Tress MacNeille.
That clip of Mrs. Glick was actually in her debut, in which she was voiced by Cloris Leachman. It wasn't until after that episode that Tress voiced her

It's simply amazing how many voices they can do. Sure it takes practice and some tweaks here and there but my lord the variety! I knew they do lots of voices, but seeing who does who is... wow! I sometimes do funny voices and impressions to entertain my friends and it's not always as easy as it looks, so I take my hat off before these talented people!

This video contains a clip of Jasper that I have been searching for in vain for ages. I know that wasn't your intent, but thanks all the same - it is one of my favorite Jasper moments and it made my day to finally see it in a shareable format :D

yeardley has also voiced the little native girl in the episode missionary impossible and has stated to have voiced Maggie in some episodes.

Me and my brothers used to watch the Simpson’s every day after school. It was the only thing we bonded over. I stopped sometime near year 4, but woah. I remember putting in the channel 108 and it being the only channel I knew. I remember it so clearly
