While Adolph Green certainly isn’t the best of singers, not least as compared to the rest of the cast, his voice and acting is full of so much character, that it’s difficult to imagine a good performance of Candide, without him.

Yes - Bernstein kept screwing the show up. The problem was always with the book so naturally he incessantly messed about with the lyrics
