  • Join me on a journey into the world of philosophy and artistic movements as we navigate the challenges of our time.
As a curious mind with a passion for music, art, and politics, I delve into the significance of movements like afro-surrealism, afro-pessimism, and afro-futurism. Through thought-provoking discussions, we'll explore the similarities and differences of these movements and what they currently reflect in our culture.
Together, we'll challenge assumptions, ask the deeper questions of life, society, and politics, and forge a path forward using philosophy and artistic movements that push our worldviews. Don't miss out on the conversation - let's begin.

I think one of my favorite afropessimist works is Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments by Saidiya Hartman. The book is set during The Great Migration and focuses on the experiences of Black people migrating to places like New York. It's a really cool work that explores history in a really intimate manner. Hartman did this by researching heavily into the past lives of the the people she wrote about and then wrote about them while weaving in historical context and the struggles they came up against. It can be a very bleak book but it also expresses a strong sense of vitality and some of the scenes she paints are dazzling and fantastic.

We need some solar punk afrofuturist works that imagine a panafrican future that I think can actually be possible. Many people dont think so due to how intertwined politics within the diaspora is with white imperialism but current examples like Niger and Burkina Faso show me that the sleeping giant wakes!

Hey! I love this comment, I’m a writer and for the last decade I’ve been writing my Afro futurism novel. I’ve stopped writing it because my Hispanic professor told me that black people don’t like scifi and that the demand for black scifi was non existent. It feels reassuring that there is a market for black authors.

I'm a philosophy student of shit house philosophy. When I started on the fishing boats off the Grand Banks and Greenland as a boy we sang on the deck because it was a harsh job and if someone stopped singing they fell overboard. You call it Dada I call it Neoism , The Society of the Spectacle.. Art is a consumer product not expression. We are consumer products and products to consume that have no meaningful connection to each other outside the transaction. Example does a urbanite artist care that some underage farm hand grew their potatoes for their freedom fries to give them the calories to create their art? Now they had the freedom and time to express said art while the farm hand did not, they spend all their time growing potatoes and not development of talents.. Art is our friend and Art is free let's set Art free...

@@lucretia_macevil Ok. I’m speaking in terms of language used to describe the indigenous people of America.
I want people to realize words matter. And the the black/African American description is needs to be discarded when referring to said indigenous.
There are no black people or black thought. Those descriptions do not benefit use us. The invaders continue to change are description. And we use them to our detriment.
Do you get what I’m saying? We are a nation of people. Not a color.

      From philosophy department at FSU:
Quite literally, the term "philosophy" means, "love of wisdom." In a broad sense, philosophy is an activity people undertake when they seek to understand fundamental truths about themselves, the world in which they live, and their relationships to the world and to each other.
So yes, they are all philosophies. Philosophy isn’t a past tense, it’s constant. It’s always changing and developing because we as humanity continue to evolve and develop.

@@lucretia_macevil Philosophy deals with metaphysical ontology, uses logic, deals with questions pertaining to the inner working s of the self and cosmos. It’s about knowing the Self.
This afro pessimism is just social studies. Afro pessimism teaches black people nothing about their true nature. This is just social studies.

Ontologies & epistemologies of self are only one part of philosophy and phenomenology, and just bc you can't see ur own self in the philosophies behind art movements & the selves utilizing these artforms, doesn't mean they're not present.
