Standoff at Scarborough Shoal | 101 East

  • The South China Sea is a strategically important and resource-rich area in Asia. Around half of the world's merchant fleets pass through every year carrying an estimated $5 trillion worth of trade. The area is also believed to contain valuable oil and gas deposits.
And ownership is hotly contested. There are ongoing territorial disputes between Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and China. One of the most well-known is the Spratly Islands' hydrocarbon deposits valued at $26.3 trillion.
The latest tension is at the Scarborough Shoal, a small cluster of uninhabitable islands which lies about 220km off the coast of the Philippines and falls under its exclusive economic zone according to international maritime law. But China also claims ownership despite its nearest coastline being 900km away. The Scarborough Shoal has valuable resources including fishing, shipping routes and potentially enormous oil and gas deposits.
In early April, the Philippines' naval forces intercepted eight Chinese fishing vessels in the Scarborough Shoal. They found large numbers of illegally-fished turtles, baby sharks, clams and corals on board. They tried to arrest the poachers but were stopped by the arrival of two Chinese maritime ships leading to a two-month standoff.
The David and Goliath-style situation has forced the Philippines, along with other smaller Asian countries, to work together on joint security. It has also pushed them to cement military ties with the US and Australia.
After more than two decades of double-digit increases in defence spending, China now has the largest fleet of advanced warships, submarines and long strike aircraft in Asia. The Philippines is working hard to get support from allies such as Japan and the US to help it build up its military capabilities.
But months of simmering tension between both sides over the disputed territory is threatening to exact a heavy toll on Philippines' economy and is damaging vital tourism and agricultural sectors.
Business communities in the Philippines are concerned the ongoing standoff threatens trade relations and investments after China tightened regulations on banana imports from the Philippines and several Chinese tour groups cancelled visits to the Philippines. Energy and infrastructure projects have also been put on hold.
As China flexes its economic and military muscle across the Asia Pacific region, 101 East asks if this escalation is a threat to peace and stability.

Scarborough Shoal is called Bajo de Masinloc, part of the Philippine Resources as a fishing bank. China's claim on it is but a threadbare attempt to own a piece of the Philippine territory. The Philippine government should protect it from foreign encroachment, such as reef and shoal grabbers like China. It may take more than 10 years to upgrade the Philippine Navy, Air Force with quality high-tech military hardware, arsenals, aircraft carriers, etc., but at least, we are going there. We are an island nation after all, and we really need a strong Naval presence to protect our seas, above, within and beneath, from pirates, smugglers, and countries that attempts to grab our reefs, shoals and natural resources.
Filipino businessmen exporting goods may consider business partners and clients for their products other than China to ensure that their business will not be affected by Chinese bullying. Maybe, they should lessen the percentage from 100% to only 20% with China and 80% divided among other ASEAN nations to distribute the economic risk. China can be looked at like a spoiled child with tantrum tendency to change its mind anytime, so is not a very good lasting business partner.

Sometimes I really hate the Philippine government. Right now they're pointing fingers as to who is more corrupt and here are their soldiers, risking their lives against the wrath of the greedy Chinese to protect the islands which some Filipinos have been residing in for how long now with only secondhand equipment. How fucked up is that? You're sending your men to their graves! But their bravery is praise-worthy. I just hope the government wakes up and get their shit together. Also, I've been scrolling through the comments here and I'm surprised that no one has brought up the UNCLOS yet. It's so funny that China even agreed and signed its agreement with that law and yet here they are disobeying the very law which they agreed to obey only because they saw how rich in resources Spratlys (and any other island in the West Philippines sea) is. If that is not greed, then I don't know what is. If that is not dishonesty, then I don't know what is either. China, you may be expanding in GDP quantity (I wonder about the quality though), you may be advanced in Military aspects but you have degraded and have fallen so far in terms of honor and righteousness.

The presence of the US military in the Phil under the Military Bases Agreement (MBA) was actually a deterrent against the Phil to assert its early claims in South China Sea. The Phil submitted to the United Nations its rightful claims to the island territories in the South China Sea about 50 years ago, but the UN never acted on the claim until today. The presence of US military and embassy in the Phil insured to stunt the Phil modernize its military which if upgraded it would become a threat to other countries especially China. When the US vacated its military bases in the Phil, (they had to explode Mt. Pinatubo to insure their obsolete weapons are incinerated and not returned to the USA as junk, the Phil was abandoned with nothing to protect itself from neighboring countries.

War Memorial In Korea near the border. Saying Chinese people use human wave is an insult please refrain to use it and they don't use that tactic. Chinese tactic was separate everyone into person per group and concentrate their fire which give more fire rate and enable them to push. Also Chinese solider was way more experienced (War veteran from Civil war) than the American solider despite their lack of weapon and ammo.

My father was in the Philippine Navy and we used to live inside Naval Station Sangley in Cavite City. At that time the Cavitenos called the Philippine Navy Kang Kong !!! It was a derisive term because Kang Kong is a type of cheap vegetable eaten only by the poor. The people of Cavite looked upon the Philippine Navy as a cheap armed service good only for eating Kang Kong !!! As far as I'm concerned the PN is a useless waste of money which could otherwise be put to good use !!!

don't you all think that nuke is already an obsolete weapon for US? its been around for more than 50 years ago since the US used it as well as that we ever became aware that there is this kind of mass destruction weapon. The only time we ever gonna know a new type of weapon when it is being used in war just like in japan where the first time the world come to realized that atomic bomb exist. US never stick on nuke alone and never stop on inventing.

and those ships are deployed all over the world.

Sa katotohanan, kunti lang yung mga simmilarities ng Pilipinas sa mga asian neighbors natin. Yung culture at society natin ay highly US and Spanish influenced and yung majority ng mga Filipinos are more culturally and socially oriented to the US & EU kaso sa Asian neighbors natin.
Also yung ASEAN, walang ginawa nila para itulong kami sa Islands dispute at ayaw nila ibigay support para sa Pilipinas against China.
Ito lang ay yung observations ko.
Yung South Koreans ay also very US oriented.

For our ASEAN neighbors with enterlapping EEZ claims like Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia let us divide the available width of the sea example if each country overlap 20kilometers with each other then let's remove 10 km. each so instead of 200kms EEZ then it will only be 190kms each.
But for china who insist on asserting historical rights, chinese history which they refused to be directed was that the Filipinos who were called Sacadas were going to china to buy porceilen with gold since 200BC, it's only in 900BC that the chinese went out from china to trade with the Philippines called Havila then Ophir for Luzon, Sheba for the Visayas and Tarsish for Mindanao, refer to the book of Jubillee a part of the Bilble History.
So we insist that we do not assert credible historical rights but just the UNCLOS provide for each country whose fronting sea or ocean, which allows 200km EEZ after the 12km sovereign rights.
The countries whose EEZs were grabbed by china and to all countries whose trade passes along the SCS but was blocked by china must together and collectively enforce the RULING of the UNCLOSE.
