🇸🇬 Singapore: The world's richest city | 101 East

  • China may soon be the birthplace to half the world’s billionaires but Singapore - the world’s richest city - is where they go to play.
    Some of the rich and famous who have moved to the tiny Southeast Asian island republic include Indian telecom tycoon Bhupendra Kumar Modi, Chinese movie superstars Gong Li and Jet Li, New Zealand billionaire Richard Chandler, and famed US investor Jim Rogers.
    One in six households in Singapore have a net worth of $1m, reflecting the flow of wealth eastwards as the centre of global economic activity shifts to Asia.
    With low taxes, a reliable, corruption-free government and protective private banking laws, the world’s ultra-rich are flocking to make Singapore home, giving it the highest percentage of millionaire households in the world.
    While the rich have fun, locals are struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living.
    Statistics show the wages of Singapore’s bottom 20 percent have fallen by about 10 percent in real terms in the last ten years, while incomes for the top 20 percent have grown by about 30 percent.
    Cries for a larger social security net for the poor are getting louder but this will mean increasing taxes. So, can Singapore, the economic miracle, sustain the ultra-rich’s attention for long? Or will the party end soon?

      The CPF is a harsh but realistic way to make people save money to insure their future.

      The hawkers and extensive wide variety of food!! You never get bored when it comes to food! It is everywhere. Singaporean favorite past time. In fact that's the cheapest things to do.
      I remember being in Singapore but never could blend well because most of the things i love and adore are not accessible. Near impossible. Too darn expensive. Most of my relatives who are in Singapore spent most times going to hawker place and shopping. Sure they will buy branded stuff but thats cause they cant afford to buy a car. And if they do own one, its a measly Toyota Yaris. That they can only keep for 10 years! Why dream when I can live the dream eh

      Pinky Racing most restaurants and cafes can be ridiculously expensive and the taste.... Well... It's so-so. But the food at hawker centres usually are reasonably priced and tastes as if it's cooked by your grandparents or parents. I personally don't see the need to own a car since the public transportations are efficient. But you know... To each their own. Some of colleagues.... To them... Having a car now equal to social success status to some. Like they have made it. Which is bollocks. Haha * shrug *

    its amazing how for the cost of a 4-5 room HDB apartment in Singapore can buy 1-3 mansions in other countries depending on the location

    • @sorcereh1
      @sorcereh1 Před 7 lety +3

      It's a simple theory.
      It's because of the location and access to the world. They are a financial hub remember.
      And their country is very stable politically as well as their society
      It's like buying an apartment in central New York VS a house in downtown New Jersey?
      It's all about preferences.

    • @Skie_blu
      @Skie_blu Před 7 lety +5

      Actually, it's because of the land in Singapore. We're an awfully small country, non-existent on most world maps. As such, land is a particularly important commodity where the supply is vastly less than the demand. This of course causes the price of land to skyrocket even with the Government's innovative measures of high-rise public housing. It's pretty different from what you speak of New York vs New Jersey, even land with the lowest property/development value can yield resonable prices. Not really due to Singapore's economic advancement.

    • @sorcereh1
      @sorcereh1 Před 7 lety +7

      It's not a fair comparison to say that a HDB can buy 1-3 mansions in other countries
      Singapore is a global financial hub with advanced infrastructure and connectivity
      It's like comparing an apartment in New York to a house in say, texas or California?
      A small New York apartment could be sufficient to buy multiple houses in Texas and California? Why? Because New York is the US's business district and it has better connectivity and infrastructure compared to Texas?
      To put it Simple, what not you just say, a house in Singapore could have bought lands in Africa?
      You get a bigger place to stay, but don't forget, you also get lower quality of life = poorer infrastructure, connectivity etc?
      Just think, how much time to take to go to a supermarket in Singapore
      VS
      How much time for a supermarket in Africa?
      In Singapore, you can drink water directly off the tap
      VS
      can you do that in Africa?
      How much are your wages in Singapore
      VS
      How much wages for the same job title in Africa?

    • @Skie_blu
      @Skie_blu Před 7 lety +2

      sorcereh1 I can't say anything about wages because I'm a kid, but in the US, I believe, there is still around the same amount of or even more of infrastructure development. However, housing prices are undoubtedly cheaper there that in Singapore. I'm under the impression that you're not a local, so, to tell you, this is the real situation here. Even back then, when Singapore was a poor Third-World country, housing prices were still higher than that of other countries. Us locals here know that this is the reason, which is why we aren't complaining. In fact, it is surprising that most Singaporeans have a roof over their head, despite the prices. Basically, the cost of living here is high because we have very limited resources. As our late Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said, "Singapore's only resource is its people". This being said, our scarce resources, including land explains the high housing prices.

    Let's just say that those who aren't Singaporean that have lived here for a LONG time, EVEN IF YOU HAVE BEEN IN SINGAPORE, will never know what Singapore truely is. Yes, it is the wealthiest country/city in the world based on statistics, but it doesn't mean it has it's bad sides. Those countries that doesn't necessary be placed in the "first-world country" catergory, they still have their good sides. Stop hating on Singapore, and other countries just because you don't want to believe that is real or just want to undermine those kind countries, because others can say the same for your country.

    Singapore is efficiently run like a hotel, but like hotels, as luxurious and glamorous as they come, they still don't have that homely feel. Our ministers are like corporate honchos, talking about statistics and ranking all the time, which doesn't really endear them to the citizens, esp the low to middle income, but definitely sweet music to the elites and who's who. So in short, Singapore is really a nice playground or cabaret if you are rich and young, but if you are poor and/or old plus sick, you had better learn to fend for yourself because welfare assistance programmes are meant only for the very very very poor. Singapore looks good from the outside which is why foreigners come here with oohs and aahhhs, but the ones who live inside will know how inadequate and malfunctioning our core is.

People making 6 figures still have a hard time paying off house in less than a decade because here in the SF bay Area home prices close to major tech industries can reach over a million dollars, so it'll take them over a decade to pay it off as well. Only if your income is over a million dollars annually can you pay off a home in less then a decade assuming what exactly your income is and if you're buying a mansion or a regular sized home.

    The education system in Singapore isn't any better too, when the government only chooses to focus more on scholastic achievements. They only reward students with good results and those with 'good leadership', as they call it. There's little space for the younger generation to develop their talents and most of them just want to get good grades and have high paying jobs.
    The younger generation is not exposed to the different areas and hence their focus is still mainly on making money. It doesn't help that more Singaporean parents are giving their children money incentives when they do well academically.

    singapore's people work hard and harder mainly as it's the main resource, and we need the influx of foreigners to remain competitive, especially, economically.

  • @InstituteofTrading
    @InstituteofTrading Před 9 lety +163

    The poorest people in Singapore are the richest poor people in the world. You can see from the pictures in the video. I am well qualified to make this judgement because I live in Singapore, grew up in the UK and have travelled the world and been to over 60 countries, seeing income brackets / living standards at the high and low end of multiple societies. The lady who was meeting with the outreach programme was wearing gold bracelets and a Chinese Jade bracelet. The kids were playing in a fully functioning uber developed playground with a 5 a side football (soccer) pitch that would be the envy of any "poor community" in the world. The poor will always complain wherever they live in the world because in their own world, all they see is that they are "lower income" than the average on their doorstep. They dont have any perspective of what "poor" or "poverty" really means. One of the common threads throughout this documentary, is that the people who describe themselves as poor keep referring to the fact that it is the governments responsibility to directly provide them with income and wealth. That is opposite to the way the rich think. It is governments job to provide the infrastructure for the poor to raise themselves up. This doesn't have to be in one generation. There is new money, but there is far more old money that is second and third generation in Singapore. People are unprepared to work and wait 50 years to be rich. They want it now and they want someone else to pay for it. I urge you to watch a series from the 1980's called "Free To Choose" by Milton Friedman. You will soon realise the opportunities these people have to "climb" are unprecedented in the history of mankind. Singapore works and the evidence is staring you right in the face that it works. Just because some people are worse off than others doesn't mean it doesn't work. Any African child with a large malnourished belly will shoot these people down for passing up on the opportunity to climb and jump at the chance to be in their shoes.

      InstituteofTrading youre too blinded by your very need to justify the state of singapore to realize that a lot of what you just said is.... horse shit.
      thank you for branding an entire class of people as simply lazy and entitled. namely the poor.
      thats some backward thinking, mate.
      all it really is is exploitation. you alright with being thieved on all your life? you sound like a propaganda piece funded directly by the current dictatorship to confuse the masses of victims whom "think" they are citizens, but are really cattle.
      there's no opportunities - 1 in 2 people in singapore are foreigners that price singaporeans right out of competition, and also experience, when it comes to jobs. additionally, many of these imports, as the video describes, are elites, and they raise the housing prices to such a level thats BEYOND any economic comprehension, much less a comfortably tailing salary.
      and finally, youre forgetting that this is a country, their citizen's HOME. its not a fucking restaurant, but thats how its being run. you wanna exploit your workers? its LEGAL, sure. Let's fire up nothing else but coal power plants no matter how fucked the environment is already. It WORKS, sure.
      but singaporeans have no bilateral relations with anyone really, so thats all the home that they have and can go to. its abhorrent and you should be ashamed for having such a shallow view.
      do the world a favour and not breed until you've educated yourself with some sense of social responsibility.
      FYI, 19:49, that "rich" poor citizen with a "jade" and "gold" bracelet, that video shot? That's the ENTIRE apartment that you see right there, no joke. Shared over 2 adults, and in many cases, with more children too. That's basically IT. There's no ROOMS, no DOORS inside. You have your head so far up your arse mate.

    Unlike what many people who are ignorant, Singapore has hundreds of fun activities like ice skating , rock climbing, hundreds of tourist activities , fun sea sports, fencing,archery ,dance sports, rock concerts, F1 motor races ,horse riding ,canoeing,wind surfing,and so many shopping places and so many types of delicious food to try and so many many hundreds of fun stuff to do . Only boring or ignorant people will think that Singapore is boring .

    I live in singapore and i am not super rich. You are only showing the "rich people house" and the super rich people. You are not showing the not so wealthy part of singapore. I live in HDB flats. Some singaporeans are not super rich. Not all singaporeans are super rich.

    The poor in Singapore is not really that poor as compare to 1st world standards, but the middle class here is struggling way more compared to other middle class in developed countries. But the trade-off here is SG is miles more convenient and safer than any other developed country.
