Ep. 8 | R154 Transmission Extension | 240sx 2jz swap

- In this episode, I remove the tail housing from the transmission to gain access to the shifting linkage so I can send it off to be extended to fit the 240sx. I also clean up the engine bay.

Hey me again, did you use regular orange rtv/make a gasket when you were done and reassembling? Or did you use something specific?
I used what's called FIPG, which is a specific Toyota brand RTV. It's really good stuff and if you search up "Toyota FIPG" it will come up!

Hey I’m about to tackle this install. Great video. I was wondering if I could do this with the trans in the vehicle or if I need to pull the trans out to stand it up?
Hey Andrew thanks for the kind words! Really stoked you're tackling this project. I would say it is certainly doable to do the extension with the tranny in the car, however it will make it more difficult. I think the hardest part will be getting the tail housing back in place after all the RTV is applied and stuff. Just make sure you tilt the tranny/engine down a little bit so the shifter housing clears the tranny tunnel! Let me know how it works out!
From 3:00-3:45.? Bro Do you have to take those 4 Torques Bolts out?
Hey Joe thanks for the comment! So you do NOT need to take those out. I made the mistake of taking them out even though I didn't need to! Just make sure you take the one torx bolt out that is pointing down at like a 45 degree angle in the tail housing!
About to try and get that shifter arm off for our R154 swap to be sent out to Driftmotion. I took the housing off and the realized the shifter arm wasn't as easy. Start doing some research and when people said "if you drop the ball or spring, you'll be disassembling the Transmission to find them, so I decided against it.
Watching your video made me feel better about tackling it, but I'm just confused... if you take those side bolts out, what's holding the spring and ball in place? and then when you go to put it back together (after getting the shifter arm back) do you literally just drop them back in?
Hey man! So after doing this extension arm I realized something. I heard people say the same thing that if you don't take out those 4 side ball bearings you will have to take apart the entire transmission. This information is wrong. The only reason you need to take all those ball bearings out is if you are actually going to be taking apart the entire transmission. Because you are only taking off the rear extension housing, you only need to take out ONE of the ball bearings. This ball bearing is located on the side of the extension housing at a 45 degree angle. It is for the reverse shift fork. Just take that one out and you are good to go!
So in my video, I accidently took all the ball bearings out that didn't need to come out, and FORGOT to take out the one I actually needed to take out! That's why when I pulled the extension housing off you heard a metal ball drop on the floor!
(And yes when you go to reinstall it you just drop it right back in!)

@@Brakenex Hey man first off thank you so much for the sub! I really appreciate that and I'm happy I can help you out! Really stoked you only have one more thing for your build! And so the only ball bearing you need to take out is actually NOT the one on top of that group of three. You don't need to take ANY of those 4 ball bearings out. The one you need to remove is poking out of the extension housing at a 45 degree angle. If you want, take a few pictures of the rear of your transmission, send that to me (tunerfactionofficial@gmail.com) and I will circle the ball bearing you need to remove.
@@Brakenex This is all to say, in my video, I removed the 4 ball bearings you DONT need to remove. And I didn't remove the only ball bearing I NEEDED to remove. I know the CZcamsr Rabid JZ who does a lot of R154 work said to remove those 4 ball bearings however he meant that you need to take those out whenever you are taking apart the entire transmission.
