Xu Xin owned. His backhand weakness was ruthlessly exploited. In game 5, Xu was reduced to pushing with underspin on his backhand, he couldn't RPB consistently on the table. Then the only game left for Xu is to drop the ball short repeatedly in the hope that Wang gives Xu a slightly long ball for Xu to apply his forehand loop. Didn't happen. Wang's short game is excellent too.

@@ttime9947 he has been far better than any of the non Chinese you mentioned since he emerged from the junior league. Ranking doesn’t tell you everything, look at his overall game and the potential for improvement. His only issue has been his mental control/toughness as he loses his temper. It’s hard to tell whether he really has that under control yet since he hasn’t really been tested a lot, but I’m curious if he’s really worked on that since being banned temporarily. Also, to put moregardh in the same conversation as those other 3 is a joke. He needs a lot of work to be consistently competitive

I have to say, that I kinda expected Wang Chuqin to win. If you look at their last meetings in the China Super League finals that game actually looked quite similar to this one. And after his perfomance in the WTT Show Event in the end of 2021 it was clearly visible that Wang Chuqin had improved a lot.

That's all about new less spinny heavy balls. It is easier now blocking games and playing spinny games less effective. So Zhang Jike's backhand flick to first ball easily gets countered. That's hard to get used to new playing style for Xu Xin and Zhang Jike. However Ma long has succeeded in adapting.
For the future of table tennis, ball weight should be decreased, so ball can gain more spin. ITTF should not forget that table tennis is not a shotting and blocking game, it is spinning game.

I think Wang Chuqin is a really good player. However it seems to me that top players like Ma Long, FZD and Xu Xin were not playing at 100%. There were too many unforced errors and I find it weird seeing Ma Long and Xu Xin unable to make quality returns to Wang Chuqin’s serves more than they used to. The way and the frequency Ma Long and Xu Xin looked at their bats and at the roof of the stadium each time they fail to return Chuqin’s ball are also pretty unconvincing. Perhaps they want to help talented junior players to climb up the world ranking to help with the draw in upcoming tournaments

Hmm. This is a considerable theory. But honestly: I think we should consider updating the image that we have of our table tennis heros. Unfortunately, their time appears to be over soon. Such multiple decades long histories of successes à la Timo Boll ain't possible in a huge table tennis society like China, with such a pressure from the up-and-coming. (In China there are more people that play regularly table tennis than Germany's population!)
Honestly: I can't imagine sportsmen of this caliber to be giving away wins! Either it's something dictated by chinese TT-politics or the youngsters are becoming just...better!

Very smart game by wang. He knew he was better in by BH to BH rallies and was very good in keeping the ball short so that xu couldn't open with his FH and then got into the BH rallies which he dominated.
What made it even tougher for xu was that wang is a lefty too which made it easier to BH rally because it is tougher for righties to play BH long line all the time than it is for lefties to play BH across the table.

WCQ has ALL the excellent capabiliies to challenge FZD shortly. Think the extra bit he needs is a cool head but seen he's getting that way lately. The refreshed Chinese CNT will be another global dominance again. No foreign players here, Covid effect?
By the way, WTT video has improved a lot on camera angle, speed, court contrast and resolution. Ball speed, placements are best seen this way. Shooting at table ends only shows serving/wrist actions (but toss often dubios) and ball directions but not clear on short/long pushes, lightning speed, trajectory etc. All of which are actually the most important part of the game. Love the upgrades, keep it this way.

Impressive handling of Xu Xin. Wang's power and arc from both wings mid and long distance seems to be unmatched at this moment. He is definitely my favorite to win now, especially with Ma Long and Fan Zhendong losing to Chuqin and Yingbin respectively. Xu Xin looked a little tired maybe, and his RPB got exposed badly in this one. Also, that shovel serve that Chuqin and Wang Manyu have been using seems to have their opponents guessing alot at how much backspin and even sidespin is coming. I like using the shovel serve as well at times, and I reckon it would be especially effective against a player who is different handed than yourself..eg. righty vs. lefty.

This year as of 2022, wang has many chance to beat and lift up his final hurdle challenger----- Fan zhendong. you will see.
