  • The match that makes Xu Xin retire
Xu Xin, one of China's top table tennis players, has recently announced his retirement from international competition. The decision comes after several disappointing performances, including a loss in the final of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 alongside Liu Shiwen.

I think, master, that Xu Xin gave us a great lesson: the change in technology in woods and rubbers is making us focus on speed as an objective, without underestimating defense and long pins, by the way. Xu is a young teacher and in my 51 years of loving this sport I have realized that the technique must be perfected but we must also adapt to the trends and possibilities that technology and science offer us. In the last tournaments where FZD and Wang Chu Qin have declared themselves winners, I see nothing more than a technique aimed at flick dueling and this should worry us because it is a technique of speed, not cunning...Xu Xin must be the player most cunning Chinese I know... and that is not copied.

In his last matches he really started struggling. Xu Xin takes a big swing for his heavy side/top spins. With how fast the game is now he rarely finds opportunities to play the game the way he wants. Not to mention that the new rubbers and ball are also less spin sensitive it has become too difficult to rely only on spin

You're talking as if Xu Xin travelled in time from Speedglue and celluloid era to the plastic ball era. He had his peak in 2019-2020(before COVID), for some months he won some big tournaments in a row. He's simply a bit old now(33) and struggled with a lot of injuries in the last 5 years.

Xu Xin had great expertise of using all available options to formulate his attack, and defence. Tremendous use of spin, force, racket speed, racket angle, and also the trajectory. It's almost like he engineered his mind and body to 1.play and 2.train the most ideal.

In Penhold grip instant movement is very important and that is somehow different from shakehand grip. you see Felix Lebrun is quick enough to play the grip and he plays the grip so effectively and beautifully, thanks to his coach of course! If you consider XuXins matches from 2009 up to 2017 he played so energetic and fast enough! but the older he got the slower he has gone! but no doubt! he is a legendary hero in TT. And I believe the outcome of XuXin, Malin, and Wang Hao will soon be a lot of good players like Felix Lebrun.

China's National Team wanted to fully utilize Xu Xin's Doubles' prowess to gain the most numbers of gold medals in the most important events such as the Olympics, thus depriving him of opportunities in Singles. As ITTF ranking system was changed to reflect the importance of event attendances, Xu Xin suffered a sudden big drop in ranking, further reducing his invitations to international events.
Xu Xin had expressed that he would welcome the opportunity to go pro because he could then bring along his family to competitions abroad. It is obvious he places his family at a very high priority. He Weibo post as shown, says he didn't succumb to all-year participation in three events (MS, MD, and XD) but he was beaten by child caring. I think he retires from international competitions in order to spend more time with his family.

Xu Xin's performance dropped so much that he could not enter the top 100 in tournaments as of 2022, what is the reason?

Losing to Ma Long is really not a big deal because Ma Long was on his peak then. It's about giving young players, such as Wang Chuqing, more opportunities. Xu Xin ranked behind Ma Long ,Fan Zhendong, Wang Chuxin and even Liang Jiankun, and therefore the team decided that they want to transition to young players.
That said, if I were Xu Xin, or even Ma Long, I would join another country and play on the international stage.
