- Known as The Human Vacuum Cleaner, Brooks Robinson established a standard of excellence for modern-day third basemen. He played 23 seasons for the Orioles, setting Major League career records for games, putouts, assists, chances, double plays and fielding percentage. A clutch hitter, Robinson totaled 268 career home runs, at one time an American League record for third basemen. Robinson earned the league's MVP Award in 1964 and the World Series MVP in 1970, when he hit .429 and made a collection of defensive gems.

I grew up in a rough neighborhood,walking distance from Memorial stadium,fatherless. Brooks Robinson was my role model. I became a pharmacist and sold drugs legally. The Human vacuum has changed so many lives for the better. I was one of them,forever grateful.

Very true. Brooks Robinson & Johnny Unitas are two adopted sons of Baltimore, both legends in their sports, and with an influence far beyond athletics. Class all the way. They both made their fans proud to be fans. I never much liked Jim Palmer (because he beat the crap out of the Yankees, my team) but I would include him in that pantheon. Good guy, great dedication, great bond with his adopted city. Class.
Brooks Robinson met his wife, Constance Louise "Connie" Butcher (0:53) on an Orioles team flight from Kansas City to Boston in July 1959, where she was working as a flight attendant for United Airlines. He was so smitten with her that he kept ordering iced teas from her until he got the courage to ask her for a date. She was born in Canada and they married in Windsor, Ontario (right across from Detroit).
Brooks Robinson has all ways been my number one favorite baseball player of all time. He is such a wonderful , kind, and amazing man. God Bless Him and his Family. Love you Brooks Robinson No. 5
I met him at a charity event and he went out of his way to introduce himself to me. Can you imagine? He got up from a couch and said "Hi, I'm Brooks Robinson." All I could think was "yeh, I know.. After hearing this speech I wish I had more time to talk to him and listen to him. What a humble person.

I have met many past and present Major League Baseball players and I can honestly say that Brooks Robinson was the most kind and cordial player that I have ever met. He left a positive lasting impression.

One of the greatest to ever play this game. A class person in every way!! I went to college with his children and played rugby with Brooks Jr.
Best Third Baseman ever, hands down. And so humble and such a class act. I am proud I was able to watch him play in person. Compare his MLB stats (not that new analytic bs) against today's players. His strikeout totals alone SHOULD shame current players. Brooks was a Man's Man on the field, and a very humble Man's Man in life.
May you RIP Brooks Robinson. The best third baseman I've ever seen or ever will see. A real gentleman and a great human being. The world could use more men like Brooks Robinson. May God bless the Robinson family.

I was there that day , half the city of Baltimore drove that 6 hour drive to Cooperstown to honor Brooksie.

My dad and I are holding the 'Baltimore's Own Hoover' sign. Went to the Hall of Fame game vs. St. Louis. Drove there over night from B-more in a Chevy Chevette.
16 gold gloves as a 3rd baseman. A record that may never be broken. Brooks is the greatest third baseman of all time along with Mike Schmidt.
I was fortunate to watch Robin Ventura play. He was a great 3rd baseman, also.

I feel Ron Santo was a better hitter and Graig Nettles, dare I say, a better fielder. However, Brooks was a better leader. Players from all sorts of backgrounds trusted him in the clutch. He had no insecurity on that field. Trust personified.
I beg to differ. Mike Schmidt was maybe the best when you add his power numbers, Nettles didnt have 16 consecutive GG did he? He was great but no Brooks
Clearly, ESPN in the '80s was better at setting rigid limits of time for speeches than MLB Network. I'm not sure which kind of speech is better. Even though most of us don't know high school coaches' names, it seems fitting that players be allowed to thank them by name if they want.
