    My Dad was in the Merchant Marines during WW2. One time he sailed from New Orleans to Cuba with a
    convoy of 11 ships. The started out at dusk, and arrived at Dawn. Only three of the ships made it. There were
    U-Boats in the Gulf of Mexico.

    Why would they even attempt to do it without proper equipment, especially knowing that there's a very good chance that they are going to have negative consequences on their health and isn't very smart 🤷. I never understood why we were such isolationist because we thought that the the war was worlds away from us and wasn't our problem, when we had U-boats off our east coast and even in New Jersey destroying ships for years. I'm not anti-war and am proud of what my dad did overseas with the US 3rd Infantry Division, but our government has made some really stupid decisions and can't stand establishment politics. He was there when they blew the giant swastika on top of Nuremberg stadium as well as the raid on Eagle's Nest and was the same division as Audie Murphy. Haha is kind of funny because he was also short like Murphy and was the exact same height at 5' 5, and also earned many metals. So it doesn't matter how tall you are, it all comes from the heart and were great men. Dad passed in 2009 and sure do miss him, but would not want him to see this despicable mess the country has become that they spillt their blood & guts for to keep free 😪

      Thank you for sharing. It sounds like your father lived a remarkable life & was boots on the ground for the biggest impact of the 20th century. I can understand how he would find today's America upsetting. Those who fought in WWII are truly in a league of their own.

    • @warrenchambers4819
      @warrenchambers4819 Před 3 lety +2

      America had a large isolationist movement leading up to WWII due to the horrific carnage of WW1. It was felt at the time getting involved in another european mess would not benefit the U.S. in any way. As proved true leading up to any war the leadership (and a large majority of people) believe it will be fought like last war and therefore base their decisions on that.

    Better to watch Hitlers Lost Sub by 'war documentaries'.
    This upload (sadly typical these days) is padded out with general footage not related to story and is quoted word for word (when we DO get to the actual subject matter) from the 'war docs.' version. I know its a personal view, but the narrators voice is awful, bordering on condescending/patronising. One good aspect of this upload..... original poor quality footage (from 'war docs' version) has been cleaned up amazingly and is truly very impressive. I don't want to put people off. Maybe watch the war documentary version for more detail and better story. Then this from 13 minutes for the beautiful film quality that has been produced here by Hindsight History. Deserved a thumbs up on that basis alone.

    Diving the UC65 at 50m on just a 23% nitro mix I noticed sailors swimming in & round the side of the boat & knowing it was a hallucination I just carried on but knew I was in danger as a solo diver out at sea…it was amazing to be there looking down the hatch as only a few people have ever done since it sunk..it’s like being in a museum that only a few people are allowed to ever go & nothings changed since it sunk.

    U-869 was sunk by a combination of a hedgehog launched by the USS Howard D. Crow and then subsequently with a depth charge by USS Koiner. Two damaged areas on the outside of U-869 confirm this. John Chatterton maintains his theory that U-869 sank herself, when her own torpedo missed its mark, came back around and hit her, but no damage consistent with a torpedo impact was found.

    • @phillawrence5148
      @phillawrence5148 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Not what the Navy and other experts said. Damage is NOT consistent with depth charges. Looks like either a torpedo exploded inside the vessel or they were hit by one .

    • @American_Jeeper
      @American_Jeeper Před 2 měsíci

      @@phillawrence5148Watch History X's recent video that has a great lengthy interview with Richie Kohler about the multiple dives he and Chatterton did on U-869, and you'll see that the Navy did credit the two US ships with the sinking. There's also great footage showing pretty extensive caved-in damage to the hull, which has been attributed to a depth charge.

    • @phillawrence5148
      @phillawrence5148 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@American_Jeeper The documentary I watched completely discredits the depth charge theory and it makes perfect sense. There are ZERO other wrecks sank by depth charges that look like that, NONE. The Navy experts said it was a torpedo, I believe them. Also the sub wasn't moving when the Coast Guard launched it's depth charges, they launched them so to not take any chances, the sub had already been destroyed.
