Question for everyone against side-loading on iOS: Do you own a Mac and, if so, do you only download apps from the official App Store? Some of the most useful macOS apps I have were found outside the walled garden. I’ve yet to hear a good argument against why it’s okay macOS but not iOS.

Customers should have a choice not have this option that the manufacture clearly thinks is a risk forced on them, surely the developers have a little more of an idea than a bunch of government officials. Personally I think its a way for the EU to get into your devices, 3rd party stores wont examine apps anywhere near the extend of Apples and will allow any half assed developed apps with any number of bugs and security flaws or known back doors, good luck with keeping your data yours. I have zero interest in side loading apps, I hope its opt in with a profile you need to install similar to what they do for Beta copies of IOS then at least I can steer clear of it

    • @ryanw8664

@@John_Merritt Nothing is being forced on consumers. It will be a choice the user can opt into, just like on macOS, which warns the user if they are installing an app from an "unidentified" publisher. I promise, it's going to be okay. People paint the EU like some looming big government communist danger... let's remember these are elected officials who are doing what their constituents have voted for. Most people in the EU feel like Apple is a bully playing with a stacked deck and they want the playing field leveled.

Going by your analogy, you’d be allowed full root access to your phone. That’s not what’s happening, though; even Android doesn’t allow that outside of exploits that void your warranty. It’s clear that Apple should be allowed to restrict what applications can be installed on its OS, just like modern game consoles do - despite having browsers that can potentially download game files from the web outside the official store.

Absolute L take on side-loading. I can agree with making it hard and having a few warnings, but it should be available for those that choose to use it. If Macs can do it and Apple can still claim MacOS is secure, there isn't ANY valid concern against iPhones doing it. This is seriously the most braindead corporate boot-licking take I've ever heard from the folks at FPT.

Your take on Sideloading was an L take IN MY OPINION. Sideloading is something that should've been available since forever. On Mac you can also "sideload" programs by downloading them from the internet, its also not locked to the app store. If that was the case, i think macbooks wouldn't be at the place where they are today. Locking users to using the appstore was always a crazy concept for me, i own an iphone for atleast 6 6ears now and i absolutely love it, but not beeing able to install anything else than whats on the app store (for example emulators) is not possible or only with huge downsides. The other thing is that probably 90% of iPhone users won't even know that sideloading will be enabled, but for those who know and who care it will be a big thing.
edit: And it will probably be sowewhere hidden in the options, just like on android "allow unkown sources".

On top of that, iOS is largely the same code it was after iOS 7, but with patches here and there. Somewhat understandably they haven’t rewritten and trimmed it down because it would be a huge undertaking. Some apps were rebuilt ground up, but the overall OS is a mishmash of code over the last 10 years. When I was there, we used an internal tool which allowed you to effectively track bugs from infancy to resolution. There were bugs sitting from 8 OS’s ago that had no resolution, and the notes would show that it just wouldn’t be fixed because of other priorities. Devs would get infuriated with the backlog but there was nothing they could do. Again, this was all years ago - long enough for the NDA to have expired. It may very well have changed, but based on discussions I’ve had with colleagues, it hasn’t.

Speaking of Siri, if you want, there is an AI "extension" (Siri Shortcut) you can add to your iPhone right now that makes it so that if you say, "Hey Siri, ask ChatGPT," you can then follow-up in like three seconds with any question, then it gives you an answer within like three seconds (pretty quick loading from OpenAI), and the first 2-3 sentences of the response (i.e., the important stuff) is read aloud to you in Siri's voice. BUT, the most amazing part is that the moment you ask the question to Siri, in iOS 17, you can literally ask another question WITHOUT wasting time saying "Hey Siri" or "Hey Siri, ask ChatGPT" all over again. You can literally have this sequence:
    You: "Hey Siri, ask ChatGPT"
Siri: "What would you like to ask ChatGPT about?" (it doesn't waste time reading this, it's just an immediate text pop-up, so literally a second after asking, you can just simultaneously ask your question
You: "Why do people not get bored of writing comments in CZcams that the cameraman never dies?"
    Siri [GPT]: [response]
You: Another question I have is that how come there's always that one student who just knows everything for all classes and even corrects the professor; what is the chance he just studied everything years before and so is completely prepared like a god?"
Siri [GPT]: maybe your friend is a living, organic GPT, but instead of being AI (artificial intelligence), he is NI (natural intelligence).
    You: Okay, I'm done.

I'm so excited to see if Siri becomes useful! And an iOS redesign would be awesome! I care not about sideloading, nor would I do it. However, my worry is how many popular apps we use now will leave the Apple App store and force people to use other App stores to get them again.

@@SchwertKruemel I'm sure a bunch. But iOS has never been fragmented like that. Anytime you need or want an App, you know where to look, where to trust and quickly manage updates etc.
I'm not against it, I'm just saying I've seen this before, When Epic went against Steam. Forcing people to switch over if they want to play a game exclusive to Epic Game Store. I like many others preferred one service over another. And I hope Apples App store retains all the popular apps people are used to in case they don't want to sideload or use other App stores.

    Bug fixes, I agree.
I’m currently dealing with issues regarding airdrop between my Apple devices. They will show up on airdrop while on contacts only but when I go to send a document, it gets stuck on the waiting button. I then have to change my settings to everyone and it will work, but my college is quite strict about it and I try to prevent it. It has been happening since the installation of iPadOS 17 and MacOS Sonoma, but my phone doesn’t support iOS 17 and it’s having the same issue. I just don’t know what’s going on.
Personally, iOS 16 was the buggiest system I ever used and same goes with other tech reviewers. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great.
