Jesse is seen as one of the most tragic characters in the history of television, as he is simply a young man that got caught up with some of the worst people to walk the face of the earth. In this video, we explore just exactly how these people manipulated and turned Jesse into a pawn in one of the most bloody chess games in all of television.
Breaking Bad has gone down as one of, if not the greatest, TV shows of all time. It highlights concepts like ego and power, and what they can do to a person. We decided to analyze how manipulation was used against Jesse Pinkman to turn him into a puppet for other drug dealers. Please like and subscribe if you enjoyed!

I think part of what makes it all so tragic is that in the end he wouldn't kill Jesse when even his wife and Saul say that maybe he needs to. His last act in life wasn't just revenge, it was also saving Jesse. It's hard to tell where the manipulation ends and actual care begins. They've made it impossible to deny he cares, but they've also made it impossible to prove he cares.
Exactly. Amazing point. Again, we see how Walter and Heisenberg constantly conflict and create these grey areas of morality.
There were moments which can prove Walt cared but just at times hard to tell when he was genuine or acting as you have mentioned
Maybe that confusion is an expression of Walt’s own confusion as to which version of himself he would like to outwardly embody to its fullest. I think he desperately craves recognition as Heisenberg, but ultimately craves redemption as Walter. So, he attempts to fulfill both by living as Walt and H-Daddy in his final moments. And becoming, in a way, more than either Walter or Heisenberg could’ve been as independent characters.

I loved how the creators were intending to kill Jesse off after a few episodes and then made his character the actual central story arc. Brilliant!
So thankful for that. Aaron Paul played the role masterfully! Truly took the spotlight.
Walter lost my sympathy pretty quickly, and without Jesse, I don't think I would have liked the show nearly as much.
Maybe Aaron Paul is the real manipulator here.

I can’t even imagine the show without Aaron Paul and the twisted dynamic and often hilarious banter between Jesse and Walt
Also, I saw someone point out once that Mike, the assassin, is the only older male in Jesses life who doesn't try to manipulate him and genuinely cares for him, this is why Mike is so much better than Walt. The scene when Mike finds out that Walt killed Gus and he came at him with a gun and Jesse moves in front of Walt begging Mike not to kill him you just get this sense, or at least I did, that Mike knows how bad Walt is for Jesse but doesn't know what to do about it.
Also the parallel between Mike's first encounter with Jesse vs Walt's first encounter with Jesse in the series. Walt's first encounter seems more calm and civil, they are both in a good mental state and capable of reasoning, overall seems like a harmless encounter. On the other hand Mike seems cold and heartless and a bit violent to Jesse when he is in his worst mental state. Guess which one who is actually a decent person and a good influence to Jesse.

@@dentangaji6161 it's an interesting dynamic with Mike coming into Jesse's life with tough love in his best interests because Mike knows the game and has been in it a while, and wants to look out for someone who's not a 'bad' criminal .
In retrospect, a parallel with Mike trying to convince his son to just go with the mild corruption of his fellow officers .
Walt , however entered the game and Jesse's life looking out for his own interests despite there being less harmful but more pride-damaging means to support his family like taking Hank&Marie or Elliott&Gretchen's help.
Mike isn't really a good person though, he might look like an old sad grandpa with a drooping face but he's just as bad as the others
@@vulk7183 I think he did have morals, he was a product of his environment and it got his son killed. That finished any zest for life he had. I always hope that Jessie got some of his cash to Mike’s granddaughter.
An extremely good scene imo no ones talks about is in the first season when Jesse tries to double down and tells his friends the crystal he has is for sale not for use, and Badger, Combo, and SkinnyPete threaten to leave he cracks, showing and subtly hinting at his need for positive reinforcement and companionship even when he is being used by the ones he calls friends

They really were his friends but they were all meth heads and peer pressuring your buddy into sharing his stash is pretty low tier for a meth head

I think that Walter DOES love Jesse in some way, most likely in a fatherly bond as shown in the episode where Walt Jr. come overs on his birthday to find Walter drunk and on pain meds. Walter in that scene is crying for the things he did to Jesse, showing that at least some part of him recognizes what he is doing is wrong and feels guilt for it. Not to mention in that very same scene he seeks comfort from his son for his actions, begging for forgiveness, which is explained quickly after as he calls his own son Jesse in confusion. Or in the scene after Jane dies when Walter hugs Jesse in the drug den, you can see on his face that he cares for Jesse and is feeling guilt + regret for letting Jane die. But ultimately he justifies it as a "necessary" move for "Jesses health." Not trying to justify Walters actions, he is a sociopathic manipulator, but I think he does care for Jesse genuinely.
Great analysis. I think this further exemplifies the idea of Walter having two sides to his personality: Walter White and Heisenberg. They both constantly clash and come out at different times. Great comment!
I loved how they showed that Walter did really regret his relationship with Jesse in "Saul Gone". When Jimmy asks Walter his regrets, he looks at the watch that Jesse got him for his 51st birthday. Keep in mind that this is right after he kidnapped his own daughter and saw his brother-in law get shot in the head.

I think you’re right. My theory is because Walt was always soft with his real son due to the disability, he saw Jesse as like his second son that he could be as harsh too as he needed to be.
Take the scene where Walt is teaching Jr how to drive for example. We see him getting annoyed because Jr is using both legs to drive, but the most outwardly angry he gets is when Jr is about to run into something with the car. But there’s no discipline or putting Jr down. The next time we see them driving together Walt is cool with Jr driving using both legs.

I've heard a lot of people say that Jesse is just stupid and easily manipulated because of it. I wholeheartedly disagree. Jesse is in no way unintelligent (except maybe when it comes to some academic trivia lol) but he *is* naive and childlike. It is shown that when he is in an environment that he is interested in he will excel. I'm kind of the same way. When I was in K-12 I got horrible grades, but now in college studying something I like I get straight A's.
This was definitely hammered (pun intended) home in the wood crafting scene. He was able to create a beautiful wooden box because of his passion for it. I think this potential for greatness is in every human being, with the tv show even putting in a scene of skinny Pete playing a beautiful piano piece. I’m glad to hear you’re doing well now! Even Badger is decently attentive, as shown in the scene with his arrest and stuff. No one is one dimensional or even two dimensional in Breaking Bad even if some come very close.

It's scary how many people who claim to be super fans of this show are just totally blind to Walt's narcissism and manipulation of Jesse. This is a great video that shines a light on it.
I think that’s a testament to how great the show is. It does such a great job that even the viewer roots for Walt.
Walter was NEVER narcissistic.......Just reactive to the world around him...........Jesse wasn't manipulated because by the time Walter talked him into selling meth, Jesse was already in a state of denying his own life......Walter just made it worse............

It's scary how people call other people oblivious and then suggest that Walt is narcissistic.... He actually wasn't though. Did you even watch the show....? He was controlling and became "the bad guy" sure, but that doesn't necessarily = narcissism. You definately missed the mark in your analysis. It is pretty common in abusive, toxic, and/or manipulative relationships for the person in power to care or even love the ones that they are manipulating. That doesn't make the relationship healthy, nor does it make the actions towards those being manipulated justifiable. Walt may have saved Jesse in the end, but is he supposed to be praised for that after all the pain he caused Jesse? Hell no! I'm glad channels like this call out the abuse for what it was.

Jesse’s other weakness is the desire for quick cash and a lot of it. When he tried going straight. He immediately gave up when he realized he’s only qualified for min wage jobs and doesn’t think to either go to college, or find a career. He’s constantly drawn back into the drug business because that’s the only thing he exceeds in that pays a lot. But when too many innocents/people close to Jesse die. He no longer cares about the money. He now realizes it was never worth it and is trapped in a prison of guilt caused by being manipulated by the wrong people

Feel like I need to say, Walter's greatest flaw is that he doesn't know when to quit. It's been a while since I've watched the show but at one point manages to convince Skylar that he doesn't have two cellphones after letting it slip, but he overreaches and makes up a new obvious lie after a show of good faith making Skylar once again suspicious
True! I think it’s an interesting look at his ego as he constantly thinks he’s smart enough to keep getting away with it, in turn digging himself into a deeper hole!
I find the relationship between Walt and Jesse so fascinating to analyze.
The way they depend on each other.
It's by staying together while cooking meth that they find meaning in their lives.
There is such toxicity between them but they are willing to kill for each other.
For each of them, they try to fill something that was not present in their current life by staying together.
It shows well through Jesse's dependence on others for example because there is also this fear of being rejected.
Jesse thinks he can only be valuable to someone by totally belonging to them, because he is so desperate to be the center of someone's existence that he no longer takes his well-being into consideration.
Obviously, this lack of purpose and identity stems from his childhood as his parents and teachers at school did not give him enough positive attention to the point that he ended up internalizing that he was a disappointment for everyone.
When he tries, for example, to sell meth to addicts who are trying to recover, he does so to gain a sense of control over his own life, which he is slowly destroying, and to have a sense of accomplishment of his own skills. But at the same time, we see that he tries to punish himself by destroying others since he thinks he is destined only for that.
Walt is also desperately afraid of rejection, I think we can also make the connection with the fact that he lost his father very young for this fear of being abandoned.
He is completely out of touch with reality and lives in his own fantasy and takes Jesse there (who is someone who has never shown his own potential and who desperately admires Walt despite all the horrors he has committed).
This version of himself where he is in control of his own life, in the end, it's just him and Jesse who clings to it since the rest of his family can't take his toxic attitude anymore.
Jesse knows him better than anyone and stays despite everything so walter will exploit this vulnerability to rationalize his behavior and for fear that jesse will abandon him in turn.
He envies Jesse's youth and he sees Jesse as an extension of himself since Walt has restricted himself all his life and refused to showcase his own skills due to his many insecurities.
I'll stop there but for me, their relationship is really one of the highlights of the show.

It's fascinating to see how their relationship also gives a lot of nuance to each of the two characters individually and how that will impact them as well throughout the show as they are unable to communicate in a healthy way.
Even if Jesse managed to break the chains of his relationship with Walt, with all the trauma he has and how much Walt impacted his life, I think Jesse felt a great loss when he learned of Walt's death.
And while I think that Jesse saying "do it yourself" to Walt means he's breaking the chains, I think it could also mean he still cares about Walt despite what Walt put him through.
He loves and hates him at the same time.
For me there are many interpretations because Jesse himself is extremely confused when it comes to Walt.
That last part about Jesse puts something pretty interesting about the show into perspective. It's a show that's very much about addiction to things beyond drugs - affection, power, control, the lies you tell yourself...

Both Walter and Jesse were addicted to the affection, respect, and validation of others. The only difference being Jesse wanted a family, Walt wanted an empire.
Even the first dialogue that Walter and Jesse had in the show was a manipulation! Whenever Walt went to tell Jesse to partner up, he blackmailed him. Either Jesse cooked with Walter or Walter would turn him in to the DEA.

Jesse is the most well liked character on the show. Almost everybody who gets to know him likes him. At first they write him off as an addict but after a while he wins them over. With Mike, he wins him over by saving them both from getting robbed. With Gus, he wins him over by competently playing his part as a master cook with the cartel. With Saul, he wins him over by having him drop off weekly checks to Andrea and Brock. Hank might not ever like Jesse but I like to think he gains some respect for him when he comes up with the idea of “hitting Walt where he really lives” with the money ploy. It’s hard to pin down where Walt is first truly won over by Jesse but Walt is shown again and again he will do anything for Jesse.
Even Skyler seems to momentarily confide in Jesse when Jesse reads the “vaminos” off the pest control truck and Skyler responds “I wish” and gives him a sad, wishful look

That's a good catch. Definitely makes his character more tragic when considering that detail.
Big oversight on Pink's relationship with his parents. They explicitly state they did help him multiple times try to recover, rehab, move back in, get a job etc. But then decided their younger son is old enough now to be negatively impacted by living with a failed-to-recover addict. Jesse doesn't even hold it against them, he understands and respects that. So they didn't outright give up on him. They tried for years, and had to make a decision to provide for their kid.
it's actually only suggested that they did much to try and "help" him, the only concrete thing we know they tried outside of general punishment for using drugs was an intervention. Everything they attempted falls into the category of "tough love" as well, which has been repeatedly shown to make things like addiction WORSE, not better, and they tried the same things over and over again which like... if something isn't working it's a good idea to try different strategies. Furthermore when Jesse does have periods of time where he feels needed and cared for he automatically starts functioning better, which is even more damning for what his parents might've attempted to do to try and stop his addictive behaviors. We also see that at least Jesse's mother does kinda act as if Jesse's actual interests aren't worth pursuing, when Hank asks Jesse's mom if he still has the car he has at the beginning of the series she says "if he had spent half the time and money on his education as he did on that car" which implies that Jesse worked on it himself, admittedly the car sounds like it runs terribly but that is a genuine interest and skill that she could've encouraged him to work on and get better at. It's not like their family doesn't have the money to help support him until he could get on his feet with a more hands on or artistic job, but his parent's value academics. Also kicking Jesse out of his own house instead of finding some other way to completely separate from him unless he gets arrested shows that they do not actually care what happens to him, if you are homeless criminal activity is your best bet for survival, and his mother has the gall to tell him to get his life together as she is kicking him out of his house right after she slapped him in the face.
like of course Jesse doesn't blame his parents, I mean he does show that he's mad at them in earlier seasons but at the end of everything he's much more inclined to take responsibility for everything, it doesn't mean that he's right
I'd also say that Jesse is very aggressively suggested to have ADHD and it is very common for parents who were expecting to have a "normal" child to make their kids condition worse by doing things that would normally work for a neurotypical kid
@LttleGhost I'm sorry dude, butnyour just wrong, even if you assume that they only tried touph love, that doesn't mean THEY DIDN'T TRY, they did put effort into helping him, that is a fact, how Jessie responded to that and how they did it doesn't matter for that, they did want to help him, but the fact is he made the choice, and his parents tried to get him to do it, we can only speculate how long it went on how bad and so on about the stuff, while his parents likely inadvertently put stress on him that caused him to turn to drugs, as can be seen when his brother is shown to be getting weed, that doesn't actually mean that they don't genuinely care but as they don't understand what it is, they don't know the best way to help
@@calebbarnhouse496 I don't think trying means that they necessarily cared, and even if they did it doesn't mean that the way they tried to "help" Jesse did much more harm than good and that Jesse not improving was HIS fault and not theirs, you describe Jesse as making a "choice" but like... do you realize how long now we know that addiction is not a choice? and like, even if they cared a small ammount they didn't care ENOUGH to look into other options, they didn't care enough to actually like look into other options, and maybe that's somewhat societies fault but I have multiple friends who's lives could've gone so much worse if their parents had just given up instead of trying different options, mine could've gone a similar way honestly. also it's suggested that Jesse already lived with his aunt in high school, as it's the first place Walt checks from the school system to find Jesse, so there's at least some evidence that his parents had already largely given up on him at that point, and again we see Jesse's behaviour improve during the show in situations where he feels cared about and needed, which is more evidence that Jesse's parents never made him feel that way (or at least more evidence than there is that they did make him feel cared about and needed) and also I'm sorry if you care about your child's wellbeing at all you do not make them homeless, that is literally making sure that your kids best chance at plain *survival* is crime
like maybe they cared some, but even if neglect isn't intended, it's still neglect, even if they didn't mean to make things worse, they did, it's not Jesse's fault, and while we don't have any concrete proof of what went on, the hints we DO have about Jesse's parents do not paint them in a good light especially if you're someone who has had personal experience in a situation similar to Jesse's
@@calebbarnhouse496 oh and one additional thing; what societal ideas are you challenging in blaming Jesse for making a "choice" vs aknowledging his parents, wether intended or not, fucked him up with their choices of discipline (cause again, while we don't have much knowledge on Jesse's younger years, the tiny bits that we do have do not paint his parents in a good light)
cause blaming Jesse doesn't bring anything new to the table, we've already stigmatized addiction and blamed addicts while making help harder to get as a society and its done nothing good, but addressing that some parenting techniques are harmful and can be the catalyst to harmful coping mechanisms and behaviours is still not so widely recognized (not just for addiction but for other mental health problems including neurodivergence as well, though they often go hand-in-hand) like literally the fact that I have to argue about it is proof of that, people like Jesse's parents need to be able to realize that they've fucked up, people need to know enough to call out parents when they have the wrong approach to things as well, solving the source of a problem is what will do the most good

Its always really heartbreaking when you think about all the bad things that happened to Jesse in this series. Breaking Bad is such a great show, that it makes you really feel for the fictional characters as if they were a living friend or family member.
Exactly. The fact that it’s able to foster such attachment between watcher and character really testifies to the greatness of the show!
Something i noticed on rewatch is the timing of *when* Walter does nice things for Jessie: whenever he has doubts or is about to leave. He makes Jessie a partner in name but in actuality he is never allowed to surpase him. when he comes close or others recognise Jessie's skills, Walter puts him back down. He is made to feel important enough to keep sticking around, but never truly allowed to stand on his own two feet. Likewise Walter does nice things for Jessie whenever JEssie starts questioning his character and thinking bad of him. And its never things like actually treating Jessie better, but big flashy gestures. He comforts him through grief and rehab but JEssie is not allowed to truly get out of the business. I think one reason he manipulated Jessie to break up with Andrea is that he was happy. And happy JEssie might have seen a future without drugs thats worth living for. Isolation is also a tactic of abusers. I think Walt did care for Jessie, not as his own independant person but as an extension of himself. He did want him to live, to be okay and to stick around but only to the point that he allows it. Jessie cannot achieve things by his own means, only what Walt *gives* him.
This is perfectly worded, narcissists often see their children or in this case their apprentice as an extension of themselves. He wants Jesse to do well to reflect how great he was at teaching him, but he doesn’t want Jesse to ever outshine him.
Walter ends up wanting to spend time with Jesse more than his own family

Out of all of the characters in breaking bad, Jesse is definitely one of the ones I feel the worst for. So many tragic, gut-wrenching scenes involving him
True. He's truly the character that made us realize just how tragic the story of Breaking Bad actually was.
God the more you think about it, the more sad his fierce loyalty becomes.

I don't care if I were going to die in the next 5 minutes. I could never corrupt an already confused young person. Or Any young person.
I Don't understand when older, more Adult people feel no responsibility to help the young. They're so OBVIOUSLY Vulnerable, and full of potential. How can anyone not want to help them?
To lead a mixed up young man deep into crime is just really heartlessly evil.

But if you understand that Pruett people are Real Beings, but tools for you to use-- you could never do that to someone who isn't even a full firmed adult.

Benjamin Franklin actually wrote about something similar to this. I can't find it but it's something about having people do small tasks for you that slowly become larger. The feeling of sunk effort eventually builds into a loyalty that is hard to shake.
Jesse is by far the best character in the show. Just as well written as everyone else, but his morality and story really make you feel for him.
Poor Jesse, even Jane manipulated him. Im not saying she was a bad person, she had her own problems and Jesse being a drug dealer was a huge bait to screw her rehabilitation from drugs, and im almost never on Walter's side but in that case, Jesse and Jane with half a million dollars would've ended up dead within a week. (I dont justify Walter for what he did, letting Jane die broke my heart)They were perfect for each other but they met at the worst possible time of their lives.
Also, to me Hank is no better than Walter as a person...he drove death upon himself but he dragged Gómez with him😢
Jesse came from an affluent family that loved him very much. That's made clear by the scenes with his little brother but like most addicts they burn bridges. It's not like he came from an abusive background or a family that never loved him.
Edit: there's another scene where Jesse calls to apologize for his actions and tells his parents they loved him very much and did their best. Doesn't sound like someone that harbors ill will over being abused. No one here has any evidence of his parents being abusive. They just like Jesse and think kicking your grown kid out after being too difficult to handle makes them abusive. People like that believe lots of things with their emotions without good evidence. They're mostly called religious people. After talking to person after person with no good evidence to suggest his parents were in any way abusive I've stopped reading replies cuz it gets stupidly repetitive and trolly. Think what you want but if you care if your beliefs are true then you'll want good evidence not just your emotional opinions.

The fact that he burned bridges because of addiction makes him more susceptible to manipulation, which is why that was mentioned in this video. If he feels rejected by his parents (even if it was his fault), he will be way more love starved and easier to control. Thanks for commenting!

But I do have something to add to this
I think that Walters and Jesses relationship can sort of be split into 3 sections:
1. Pure business
The first part of season one where they work on this as a purely business venture, simply combining eachothers skills to make money
2. Closer friendship
Slowly, they build into something which you could call being friends, while bonding over dealing with danger and making lots of money
3. The facade
Over time, as Walter realizes his full potential and how well he is able to manipulate Jesse, their relationship becomes more of a facade held up by Walter for the purposes of keeping tensions between the two low. Eventually, Jesse starts to break free after he pulls out of the post-gus meth dealings they were doing, and eventually he breaks fully free when he doesnt shoot walter at the end of the final episode. And i think his rejoicement in the car in the last episode is also partly caused by this fact
And, as an addon ill say that about 80% of the series is the facade, and that the first two stages pass suprisingly quick. Just shows that it really didnt take much for Walter to turn into heisenberg
Great analysis. That was a good way to summarize their relationship. While I definitely agree with the majority, I would say that all three of those stages are ever-present throughout the whole series, with one of them taking the reigns at different times. Great comment!

It is also noted their first serious argument occurred in season 1. Walter was never a good fit for Jesse and they were destined to fall apart. Walter just sincerely needed the money for meaningful reason back in season 1.

Honestly, jesse's my favorite character in the whole breaking bad universe because of how real he feels. A well meaning kid in a toxic neverending cycle that brought him to his breaking point. He didn't deserve any of it.
He was a way for us to humanize the characters of the show and really remind us how horrible the situations were 🙏

The way I’ve seen walt defenders saying it was completely jesses fault for Walt’s downfall when he told Hank about their crimes. Even tho through the entire show Jesse was manipulated time and time again. And he was shown to always have a strong belief in protecting kids from drug dealing so they expect him to just accept walt lied to him and poisoned one of his loved one like ?? I think it was more like he saw the gut wound and know he didn't have to. The nod at the end was he knew he pulled all of this off with the ulterior motive to free him, when he could've killed the Nazis and ran. The first time ever Walt did something for Jesse unselfishly.

Everything was great but the last straw with Jane was when she basically blackmailed Walt and spoke for Jesse, making important, mutinous decisions.
people have been arguing in the comments that Jesse's parents actually did love him and gave him everything that he needed to succeed but I feel as if the normalization of neglecting "fuck up" kids, like addicts such as Jesse and kids with developmental disorders (which... Jesse is also heavily implied to have ADHD, whether intentional or not there is a ton of evidence for it) we don't actually know what they tried to do to help him, other than obviously forms of punishment and Jesse himself also mentions an intervention, but the problems with these things though are that they are "tough love" tactics, which have now been proven to more often make things worse than better for kids struggling with things like addiction and the problems that come with neurodivergence. it also seems like the repeated the same tactics again and again which I feel like it should be common sense at this point to try something different if how you're currently approaching a problem isn't working for your child. but I think the most damning thing about their attempts to "help" Jesse is that during the course of the show, in moments where Jesse has genuine support and feels needed, he automatically starts functioning better, think of his time with Mike, or even how he was with Jane before Combo was killed, his living space gets to a point where it looks genuinely nice and the amount of drug use we see from him is significantly less.
also maybe Jesse's parents had the right to not have him live in their house, kicking him out of his own house instead of finding some other way to completely separate from his criminal activities is... cruel, and quite literally makes it so that selling meth is his best option, and his mom had the nerve to tell him to get his life together as he is being kicked out after slapping him across the face. in that same scene we also get the information that Jesse's parents just left him alone with his aunt while she was dying, and while we can't confirm whether or not Jesse took care of her like he said, the only thing his mother even tries to correct him on was "you did not make her lunch every day" and completely deflects when he asks where she was when that was happening and... it seems like Jesse's aunt was the only person who truly offered him unconditional love, and having his parents leave him alone to take care of her while she was dying is honestly something that had to be traumatic
oh and ALSO since Walt found Jesse at his aunts house from the high school's registry it does seem like Jesse has been living with his aunt more than his parents since high school
also in terms of whether or not they encouraged Jesse's interests, there is a lot suggesting that they value academics over anything else, a lot within the specific things of Jake's that they praise, but also when Hank is looking for Walt and asks about Jesse's car, his mother says "if he had spent half the time and money on his education as that ridiculous bouncing car" which suggests to me that Jesse worked on the car himself, and admittedly it sounds like shit, but it's a genuine interest that could've been encouraged and possibly led to a job for Jesse, and even if it would've taken him awhile to build up some real skill, his parents clearly have money and could've supported him while he got on his feet
I agree. I never got the real image that Jesse's parents were just normal family at the end of the rope with an addict. There was no real love there. It really did seem like they wrote him off as a fuck up from the start.

He lured him in like a fish. What does the fish want? Food, you put bait on the end of a hook and it ensnares itself. Humans have changing needs, Walter was able to adapt his strategies throughout the series because he's a very intelligent person. When there was ever a competition for Jesse, he often eliminated the competition, he let Jane die not because she was dragging Jesse down, but because she was potentially, one way or another, going to cost him Jesse who was as fundamental to his success as he himself was. He never could have done it without Jesse, so he desperately attempts to keep him on his side. I don't think you can say he cares about Jesse really, I guess in some twisted way he does because he saves his life, but you could also argue that this is his way of reinforcing their bond so he can continue to manipulate him. A lot of the things that threaten Jesse's life are things that Walter is responsible for in some way.
Wow, that's a really great way of looking at it! That's an amazing analogy that really ties together a lot of what we were discussing in terms of the emotional intelligence of Walter to really turn the situation to his favor against some a lot more vulnerable like Jesse. A lot of the by-products of these actions taken by Walter are a lot of the hardships Jesse faces throughout the series. It's also really neat how you question the basis of their relationship because that's something amazing that the show does is that it kind of leaves their relationship as ambiguous whether or not it was founded on affection. Jessie gets almost dies by drug dealers Walter saves him. From the two drug dealers.
Before finally quitting Walter his Jessie I think 10 million dollars. More money then he could ever imagine and walks out.

Breaking Bad is a great take on early 2000s suburbia. In 2000, my parents and I moved from Hardy, Virginia (rural) to Worthington, OH (suburbia) when I was 7 years old. It was such a culture shock to have rude old neighbors bitching at you for no reason and just an overall sense of "wtf is this?" as well as almost never seeing my parents bc of work priorities...so i know exactly how that loneliness can be ... Its a fake and overpriced life that is not natural in any way and is most likely, very harmful to the family structure, overall physical and mental health, and I feel that you'll see way more families become homesteaders than want to repeat what their parents did. Thats my future. Live off the land. Fish, hunt, and grow as much as humanly possible! Its what most ppl did not more than 150 years ago in the US.

The way Jesse was routinely manipulated by multiple parties really made this show a frontrunner for the topic. The only ones I might put above it in terms of TV manipulation would be The Sopranos when Tony has Chrissy kill a cop who he claims wacked his old man in order to bond him to him deeply (among other things), and Oz cause the whole show is manipulation on manipulation. And both shows are just better, but BB definitely does this and other things very well.
Breaking Bad definitely does a great job of using ego and manipulation as themes and explores them very beautifully. The examples you listed are great, too! Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

I know the censorship is for a reason but it is till kinda funny in a way. Here is a show about crime, murder, and social corruption but heavens forbid we see a gun, nudity, or drugs.

Jesse pinkman is probably the character I hold closest to my heart. He is an abuse victim represented so honestly most people dont even see it. He is a dirty victim. A victim who does bad things for approval of bad people. Something that I really feel as an abuse victim. I did do terrible things for the approval of men I looked up to. Jessie is not blameless and neither am I.
I’m sorry that happened to you and I hope you came out of a better person. You will forever be someone that was challenged by life and won.

0:14 yooo, why Jesse shows his naked picture to Gale
No Walter didn't love Jesse. He loved to control Jesse. And anyone else he could. He loved that Jesse needed him. That's why he sabotaged Gail ("I said 85") Gail didn't need him. Walt needed Jesse because he could be the alpha in the room. Remember the scene where Walt's in the waiting room with the other cancer patient having the "Who's in control til then? Me." speech? He ends it by saying "That's how I live my life." The very next scene opens with him putting on the suit to cook for Gus, to whom he is a slave. And not only a slave, but such a slave he had to k*ll another man just to have enough control over his own life to remain Gus's slave. Walter is the beta in the room with every other criminal he encounters, he just thinks he's hard, but nobody else does.
He compares himself to Gus at their first meeting, only to be humbled. He wears the black hat he seems to think looks hard when he's trying to send an image of being a big boy, and I believe not by coincidence, he usually ends up in a second hand embarrassment inducing situation while wearing it. Like when he wore it to meet with Tuco and say "I want all of it" because he thought so lowly of these criminals that he considered himself just as hard as them just for being there, but then he crumbles and freaks out at the beating Tuco gave his man. A normal reaction, but not the hard character Walt wants to sell us on when he wears that hat. However with Jesse, he truly is the alpha because Jesse doesn't have Walt's one true special advantage. Intelligence. Jesse isn't smart enough to fend off Walt's BS and doesn't have great boundaries. He can't simply take one look at Walt and see this is a dude who's only able to be in the room because he's a great chemist, and otherwise of no value to street stuff. Walt and Jesse's relationship is based mostly in a narcissistic control cycle. So if you call it love when your toxic ex keeps mistreating you and you go back to him or her because you lack boundaries and at least have someone there to not feel alone, then yeah Walt loved Jesse. Or cared about him. But not in actuality, no he didn't. Sometimes things are simple, and if someone poisons a child to emotionally manipulate you, they don't care about you.

One thing I found very interesting about jesse, you could definitely tell he feared being alone when he had the party that just never stopped at his parents house after he bought it.
Not only did it show his fear of being alone, it showed his need to please others, and to be loved and seen as kind of a provider.
He truly was an "abused child" trying to grow up, and be a man.
One thing I believe that the viewer has in common with Jesse is the fear of loneliness, and that's why we ended up caring so much about him in the end.
Watching for the second time. So great. Insightful, earnest, and moving. And trenchant.
It's so weird how people seem to forget how Walter hired people to kill Jesse as soon as he realized he couldn't be manipulated anymore. And they still think Walter "Loved" him or cared about him. He never cared about Jesse, he cared about what he got out of it. Walter would never put Jesse's needs ahead of his own, he never cared about what Jesse wanted, for him it was all about having the perfect son who would do and be exactly what Walter wanted, but as soon as Jesse developed individuality, he became useless to him and that is not love, it's obsession.
Which was... when? Season 5? Jesse already betrayed Walter TWICE at that point. First time for Jane, second time for Gus. That second one especially highlighted Jesse's idiocy. He betrayed the man who saved him from the child-killing goons... for the boss of those child-killing goons. Did Jesse already forget why he had a problem with Gus near the end of Season 3? Boy, that was quick.

If that were the case, he would've let Jesse die at the end of Season 3. He gained absolutely nothing from rescuing Jesse there. Only more problems to deal with. Very deadly problems.
While it's true Walt was manipulative, people go to great lengths to make excuses for Jesse.
Jesse is literally a drug dealer working with the Cartel. He knew from day one the risks, and yet was never willing to get his hands dirty when it required him to.
Literally so many of the shows conflicts can be directly traced back to Jesse and Walt having to clean up for him or get his hands dirty to protect them.
Take Jane for instance. Walt didn't want to kill her. It tortured him. But Jesse literally ratted out his partner and put Walt in a situation where a Junkie could expose them any moment to police.
Jane literally blackmails Walt because Jesse gave out his personal information. Making matters worse Jane has relapsed and sent Jesse down a spiraling addiction which again puts Walt and anyone they work with in danger.
Later on in the show Jesse starts throwing bricks of cash out his car window while they are working for Gus. He becomes a complete loose cannon and even tries to murder two employees. Gus is not a man to mess with and Walt literally ruins his entire reputation with him by refusing to cut Jesse loose. Walt literally interferes on behalf of Jesse which puts him on Gus' hit list.
While its sad Jesse had to eventually kill Gale, that entire situation was created because of Jesse's erratic actions.
Walt would have been better off cooking with Gale as he actually understood the science and respected it. He was also stable and reliable.
Again Jesse knew the career they were in and yet time and time again put both him and Walt in danger for stupid reasons. Walt and Gus would have even got a long if it wasn't for Gus challenging Walt on Jesse.
Also let's not forget Jesse is responsible for killing many innocent people by creating and selling a highly addictive drug. The dude isn't some Saint.
Again Walt could be a real bastard. But there are so many times when he had to get blood on his hands because Jesse acted like a spoiled child. And then after Walt does what needs to be done to keep them from going down people act as if he's a complete monster.
Hell even after Walt takes Gus out and they are in the clear working with Lydia, it's Jesse who ruins everything by being a rat.
Walt does share some of the responsibility as he should have cut Jesse a long time ago. But it's not as if he could as Jesse was constantly threatening to expose Walt in Season 2 and 3. And whatever you want to say about Walt he definitely cared for Jesse.
And to think that Jesse was initially just a dispensable punk who wouldn't probably make it to season 2.
One of the best choices they made was to keep Jesse in the show!
Walter used Jesse, but ultimately cared deeply about him. At the end, he rescues Jesse.

Although, an interesting question to pose is the possibility that perhaps Walter was always that sociopath and the meth business just let him indulge in it? True, especially with the grey matter debacle. However, I’d say he was still a good person, albeit with some flaws. But you’re definitely right that he let them take control. However, do you think the show was trying to say Walt’s spiral could happen to anybody?
I guess, years of wasting intellectual capabilities and ambitions can make most people break bad. Pure unrestrained intelligence is psychopathy
I guess it was like that. However, even before he was awakened Walter White was at best a nasty piece of work - you do not histrionically quit your job like that, and you do not sneak attack your son’s bullies like that. Only a person with that much ego and pride and hidden rage does that - Heisenberg is what happens when a person like that had power.
In my opinion, those, plus the rest of Breaking Bad, de facto qualify him with the dramatic label of evil, simply because there is very little between Walter White before Breaking Bad and even in the first episode, and Heisenberg, and even the Heisenberg from Season 1 and elsewhere are little different save the hesitance to kill (and after Krazy-8), is dealt with real quick (possibly out of necessity). And while admittedly they were not that bad before the events of Breaking Bad, they also do not bode well for Walter as a character even if the show was mundane.

Even Todd manipulated him. It's only until he escapes from the Nazi's that he decides that he will never be manipulated again, which is seen through how he acts in El Camino. All of these shows and movies are written so well.
Jesses character development was great to watch and it’s great that we got El Camino go see its fruition.

jesse isn’t stupid, he’s actually quite intelligent. he’s just traumatized and has untreated mental health issues

this is a great video and will come in handy for me later on. I got my mother started on "Breaking Bad" and am currently trying to explain to her how the deaths of the people on the aeroplanes at the end of season 2 are in a slight way Walters fault b/c of his action/inaction with Jane. She is refusing to see Walt as doing anything more than protecting Jesse from death; maybe it'll change when she sees what he does with Brock. it'll be good to be able to show her this video after she's done with the series if she still doesn't get it. Thank you for helping me be able show her who Walt really is through this video, it's much appreciated.

This is such a great analysis Breaking Bad is my favorite show and Jesse and Walter are my two favorites Jesse being my number one for many reasons but the main reason is because out of the people in the world of drugs in the show Jesse is the one who has the most good in him and I personally would not label him as a villain I think he is deep down a good person with a good heart who made stupid choices and got forced into even worse things because of Heisenberg. and btw I'm definitely subbing you deserve more subs like your content is awesome I am so glad this video poped up also btw I'm not sure what other characters you plan on covering next but could you maybe do Optimus Prime from the bayverse or g1verse?
