I've seen Sammy gesture to Ed "not now" regarding him starting to smoke in interviews. Ed's constant smoking was just rude at times. Alex smoked in interviews too, although not as much as Ed. Most people that don't smoke, try to avoid being around it, and don't want to be subjected to second hand smoke. Tragically, even Ed said that his father taught him to calm his nerves with alcohol and smoking when he was just a kid. Probably the same thing with Al too, although it doesn't appear that Al gets as nervous as Ed. Will always love Van Halen though, and I'm so sad that Ed pasted. He will always be one of my favorite guitarists.

Sammy and Eddie made agreat team and the entire band seemed better with Sammy. I love Sammy because he wasn't obnoxious he was just himself, and his voice is beautiful.
Alison D you weren't alive back in 1978 thats when i first saw van halen live at the Philadelphia Spectrum 20,000 people that world tour 40 years later still is in my mind as fresh as it was 40 years ago..David Lee Roth was incredible..no way could Sammy out do david i also saw their 1979 world tour and 9 more times also with sammy and No sammy couldn't touch dave..

@James H 1991 was the year Wolfie was born, so that might also have something to do with Eddie being happier.

At 2:39 mark, you can see Sammy trying to stop or tell Ed not to light up in the TV studio. Now, over the years I know Sam has said a lot of stuff about Ed's poor health. But that mark is proof that Sammy cared about Eddie's health. Period.

I like the 3 of them together. Each one has something for the group. Alex is always like the big brother and everyone listens when he talks. Sammy's got a great personality, Eddie & Michael are the youngest ones. I miss them!
Sammy was a professional musician who became a rock star, why he's attentive to things like not smoking in somebody's TV studio. the van halens were pretty much kids who became rock stars (no offense, just how it happened for them) so they never had to worry about things like that. Eddie seems like one of those guys who buries things just to go along and get along and then when the break comes remembers all the things you did to piss him off and it all comes out in interviews.

You are incorrect about the Van Halen Brothers being kids who became Rock stars . They were both born gifted, and were both classically trained by their father in music. They played their entire lives, and became musicians early on. As far as their maturity or behaviors , that’s something you can talk about.
Could be since Sam has said in the past he doesn't like cigarette smoke. But I also saw the same behavior between Sam and Ed on the first part of the Bob Costas " Later " interviews. I'm certain Roth cares too, I should add. Hope Eddie is feeling better nowadays.

Yes. Sam brought in Ed Leffler who was his manager before he joined VH. Ed Leffler died of cancer in October 1993. Then, Alex's brother in law Ray Danniels (Rush's manager) took over, and Sam butted heads with him and then eventually the brothers.
The Van Hagar stuff hasn't aged that well, and these clothes don't help!!!

I think most Van Halen fans never really thought of Gary as a VH member, even if they like him as a musician. It just wasn't the right fit. However, there are many Van Halen fans that actually prefer Sammy to DLR. Yes, in the beginning DLR was the quintessential showman with a good voice which, with Ed's genius guitar playing, made Van Halen famous. However, as the years went by, Dave's theatrics became just plain cheesy and silly, and he was increasingly annoying. His voice is gone too. Sammy's voice is by far better than Dave's. Personally, my favorite Van Halen songs and albums were done with both Sammy and Dave.

What a waste these guys were. None of them have done anything REALLY interesting in over 20 years. Glad DLR is back where he belongs, but these guys look like men in their late 30s and early 40s (Hagar) who are veteran partiers but are way beyond their creative peaks but don't know what else to do.
